## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

As Newt Scamander writes in his book on magical creatures, *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, though Bowtruckles look pretty harmless, ‘if the tree in which it lives is threatened, it has been known to leap down upon the woodcutter or tree-surgeon attempting to harm its home and gouge at their eyes with its long, sharp fingers. Ouch! You’re best off keeping an offering of woodlice nearby to keep this little fellow happy…

Harry Potter Who’s Who Professors Edition: Dumbledore, McGonagall and Snape

## Albus Dumbledore:
Headmaster of Hogwarts and Supreme Mugwump of the International Confederation of Wizards and Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot. The finest wizard of his generation, Dumbledore is the only wizard that Voldemort is afraid of. Tall, thin and very old, he has blue eyes, a crooked nose and a long silver beard. He wears half-moon spectacles and a long purple cloak. He has a scar on his left knee which is a perfect map of the London Underground. As a schoolboy, he was in Gryffindor house. 

## Minerva McGonagall:
Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts. She is a rather serious-looking woman, with jet-black hair scraped back into a tight bun on her head. She wears square glasses and an emerald-green cloak. Professor McGonagall is head of Gryffindor house and is the Transfiguration teacher. If you’ve read Chapter One of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone you will know that she can turn into a tabby cat! 

## Severus Snape:
Potions master at Hogwarts, although apparently he knows an awful lots about the Dark Arts. He is tall and thin with sallow skin, greasy black hair and a hooked nose. He teaches his classes in the dungeons, where there are pickled animals floating in jars. Snape appears to hate Harry Potter, whilst Draco Malfoy is one of his favourite students. Though that isn’t surprising, as he is also head of Slytherin house.

## The Standard Book of Spells (Grade 1) by Miranda Goshawk
A Hogwarts staple, The Standard Book of Spells followed a student of magic around from their very first year at Hogwarts and we definitely wouldn’t want to be left out. Hermione, of course, was an avid reader of this particular set-text, judging by the 112% she received in her first year Charms exam. The various grades clearly prepared Hermione well for life beyond Hogwarts – by the time she was on the run with Harry and Ron in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, she had some seriously superior spell work going on with those protective charms.

## A History of Magic by Bathilda Bagshot
This Hogwarts set-text would provide you with historical context for the wizarding world – although Harry also used it to find his owl, Hedwig, her name. Harry and Ron might have struggled to stay awake through History of Magic classes with Professor Binns, but we can’t help thinking they were a bit ungrateful, given they got to learn about the Werewolf Code of Conduct and goblin rebellions. Plus, Professor Binns didn’t seem quite so boring when he told the class all about the Chamber of Secrets. Muggle history is filled with all kinds of interesting facts, but we reckon wizarding history is even more exciting. 

## Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them by Newt Scamander
A book that resides in almost every wizarding household and an approved textbook at Hogwarts ever since its publication, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is high on our list of top reads – and this is one Muggles really can read! The result of Newt’s many years of travel and research, this book serves as an authoritative compendium of magical creatures. The A-Z includes all sorts of weird and wonderful creatures, from fiery phoenixes to foul-smelling Bundimuns. ## A Beginners’ Guide to Transfiguration by Emeric Switch
We have to admit, Transfiguration would be one of the classes we’d be looking forward to the most if we received our Hogwarts letter. And we’re in good company, Hermione said the very same thing to Percy just after she’d been sorted into Gryffindor – ‘I’m particularly interested in Transfiguration, you know, turning something into something else, of course, it’s supposed to be very difficult’. She wasn’t wrong! Once they got to Professor McGonagall’s class she warned them, ‘Transfiguration is some of the most complex and dangerous magic you will learn at Hogwarts’.  We’d be dying to get started reading this beginners’ guide, and it sounds like we’d need it!

## The Tales of Beedle the Bard
‘You’ve never heard of The Tales of Beedle the Bard?’ Ron asked Hermione incredulously in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This just about sums up why the tales are so special in the wizarding world, and why we’re so happy Muggles can get their hands on these stories too. For centuries, the fables have been the staple of wizarding childhoods, the sound of bedtime stories.  To children who grew up in wizarding families, ‘the Hopping Pot and the Fountain of Fair Fortune are as familiar’ to them ‘as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty are to Muggle (non-magical) children’. And of course, ‘The Tale of the Three Brothers’ came in very handy to Ron, Hermione and Harry in Deathly Hallows, just as Dumbledore had envisaged it would.

## Moste Potente Potions
Of course we’d be lucky to get a request for Moste Potente Potions past the librarian, Madam Pince, but where there’s a Lockhart, there’s a way. This potions book belonged in the Restricted Section of the library at Hogwarts, and when Hermione checked it out in her second year, she realised just why: ‘Some of the potions had effects almost too gruesome to think about, and there were some very unpleasant illustrations’. Why then, you may ask, would we want this book on our shelves? Polyjuice Potion, of course! Wouldn’t you want to try out transforming into someone else, just for an hour or so?

## The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection by Quentin Trimble
Given the unfortunate fact that some witches and wizards more than dabbled in the Dark arts, we think we would definitely want to check this book out of the library. This book was on the list of set-texts for students starting Hogwarts, so Albus Dumbledore must have agreed. Hermione might have advocated a practical approach to Defence Against the Dark Arts in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, but we’re sure she’d agree that a book is always a great place to start learning, particularly when you don’t have The Boy Who Lived to give you pointers.

## Quidditch Through the Ages 
A favourite of Harry’s, this book is another one you don’t have to daydream about – it’s available to Muggles! Quidditch Through the Ages is a love letter to the wizarding world’s favourite sport, with trivia (like the longest ever Quidditch match), tales of on-pitch antics (you’ll be scandalised!), team profiles and Quidditch moves, from the Bludger Backbeat to the Wronski Feint. How to cast a spell over everyday games

Who wants to play a game? From wizard chess to Gobstones, witches and wizards have a lot of choice when it comes to indoor games. 

To keep you busy and entertained, we’ve thought about some everyday games you might be playing at home. Here are a few ideas to make them a little bit more magical… 

## Wizard’s hangman 

You might have heard of the word game, hangman. In the wizard version, you won’t be drawing a stick figure, you’ll be drawing a stick-wizard on a broomstick:
•	Player one thinks of a word – try to make sure it features in the Harry Potter books!

•	Player one draws dashes at the bottom of a piece of paper. The dashes represent the number of letters in the word

•	The other players try to guess the letters of the word. Only one letter per turn!

•	If a letter is guessed and it belongs in the word, player one must write the letter on top of the correct dash

•	If a letter is incorrect, then draw a line to start on your stick-wizard 

•	If each part of the stick-wizard and broomstick is completed before the word is guessed – they fly away and player one wins the game

*Tips for drawing your stick-wizard on a broomstick*

•	Start with the broomstick. Draw one line for the handle and three smaller lines for the twigs. Make sure it’s floating in the air!

•	The stick-wizard must sit on the broomstick

•	The final detail of the stick-wizard is their wand. Don’t forget!

## Harry Potter Bingo: Philosopher’s Stone edition

If you’re reading the first Harry Potter book, this is the game for you.

•	Copy the bingo card we’ve provided above. Use a ruler to draw the squares and then write one word into each square

•	Whilst you’re reading the book, keep an eye out for the words that appear on your bingo card

•	When you find one, draw a line through the square that contains the word you’ve discovered 

•	If you manage to cross out all your squares, shout, BINGO! Or DUMBLEDORE, if you prefer… 

•	If you want to play again, why not ask a member of your household to draw a new bingo card and fill it with new words!

## Snitches & Lightning Bolts 

Have you ever played the logic game, noughts & crosses? Well, Snitches & Lightning Bolts is almost exactly the same. But instead of drawing a cross you draw a lightning bolt – just like the one Harry has on his head. And instead of a nought, you draw a Snitch. Here’s how to play:

•	This is a two-player game

•	Draw two horizontal lines and two vertical lines, creating a grid with nine squares. Make sure the lines are far enough apart!

•	Choose who is going to draw lightning bolts and who is going to draw Snitches.

•	Each player takes it in turns to draw a lightning bolt or Snitch in an empty square. 

•	To win, you must make a line of lightning bolts or Snitches. The line can be horizontal, vertical and diagonal.

*Drawing tips:*

•	For the lightning bolt, remember that it is zigzag-shaped

•	For the Snitch, start by drawing a small circle and then adding a wing on each side.

•	Don’t worry too much about getting them exactly right, it’s the magical thought that counts!

At the start of April, the digital audiobook of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was made available for free via Audible as part of their newly launched [Audible Stories platform](https://stories.audible.com/start-listen "Audible stories"). Children everywhere can instantly stream it for free in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Japanese, on desktops, laptops, phones or tablets, without joining or logging into Audible. 

The English language version will be read by Stephen Fry, in both the UK and, for the first time, in North America. 

*Philosopher’s Stone* is also available to listen to for free via Alexa in the territories where it is available.

Kobo are offering *Philosopher's Stone* from their website for a limited time with the use of a redemption code – click [here](https://www.kobo.com/promotionalreward/HPATHOME) to create an account. Audioteka are offering a stream of the Polish version of *Philosopher's Stone* to non-members on their homepage. 

Meanwhile, if families are already Audible members, they can also listen, for free, to the newly released audiobook of J.K. Rowling’s *The Tales of Beedle the Bard*, narrated by stars of the Wizarding World – from Noma Dumezweni to Jude Law.

Thanks to a Harry Potter At Home collaboration which also launched on April 1st with library supplier OverDrive, libraries and schools in over 80 countries are equally able to access the first book in the series free of charge.  Pottermore Publishing is working to expand the availability of the offer to library partners worldwide to ensure as many patrons as possible can borrow the first Harry Potter story in eBook and digital audiobook format without waitlists or holds. These library partners include: Bolinda, Bibliotheca, W.F. Howes, Findaway and Ingram.

Patrons of participating public and school libraries across the globe will have unlimited access to the titles in a selection of over 20 different languages, for a limited time. And if you’re not already registered with a library, you don’t have to miss out! Many public libraries are now offering digital library cards for new joiners, meaning more people than ever can discover the magic of their local library, without leaving their home!

A new Alexa Skill from Pottermore Publishing is available in the US through the Amazon FreeTime service. To access it simply say, ‘Alexa, open Wizarding World quiz’. 

The new FreeTime skill is aimed at younger listeners (primarily 8-12) and requires no prior knowledge of the series. Instead it is comprehension-based, with all of the information required to answer the questions contained in the audio clips from the series.

J.K Rowling and her team have already announced a special, open licence for teachers to read the seven Harry Potter books aloud to their pupils in virtual read-a-long sessions on video.
