## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

This potion isn’t one we’d brew personally – there are enough confusing things in the world as it is. But we see the appeal for mischief makers. 

## Babbling Beverage

We all get a bit tongue-tied now and then. A quick swig of Babbling Beverage and you’ll be chatting away for hours. Problem solved. Until the babbling itself becomes a new problem. 

## Hiccoughing Potion

Ah the Hiccoughing Potion – ever so useful if the hiccups are getting you down, but really, that’s it. But we imagine it’s a good early potion to teach to Hogwarts students learning the ropes.

As far as we know, the Ageing Potion only works to make you older – if it worked the other way round and Muggles found out about it, we’re sure it would be flying off the shelves at every make-up counter. And, as Fred and George learnt, there are magical ways of detecting you’ve used such a potion, should you be trying to cheat your way through an age gate, for example. 

## Elixir of Life

A potion that results in eternal life for the drinker, as long as you keep drinking it. Nicolas Flamel loved this tipple, but immortality comes with its own consequences. 

## Amortentia

On the surface (and for those harbouring a crush), the world's strongest love potion sounds pretty exciting. But on closer inspection, Amortentia and other love potions are pure trouble. Alas, it doesn’t create real love, just intense obsession. Look at how Lord Voldemort was born...

## Draught of Living Death

The Draught of Living Death – a potion to send the drinker into a deep sleep which resembles death. We wouldn’t recommend trying this one as of yet; it’s currently unclear on how to awaken from this potion. If we ever did find out – we’d be snoozing away untroubled every night.

## Pepperup Potion

There’s only so much hot water, honey and lemon can achieve, despite what our Muggle grandparents may say. For the wizarding world, only Pepperup Potion will do. Curing a cold far quicker, this potion seems like the holy grail of useful concoctions, even if it does leave you smoking at the ears for hours after..

Polyjuice Potion gives the drinker the ability to take another’s appearance – which can be a good or bad thing, as we learnt. The potion is definitely one of the most useful, but with any small mistake, can also turn you half-cat. So while Polyjuice Potion was used for good (such as the Order of the Phoenix transforming themselves into ‘seven Harrys’ to protect Harry on a flight) we all know how damaging it can be if you’re a Death Eater with an agenda... 

## Draught of Peace

While Muggles opt for a cup of tea, wizards and witches have the Draught of Peace (a concoction to ease agitation of the drinker). Sounds ideal, really.

Of course, there was only one logical number one. Here lies the potion that could bring you a lottery win, good weather for days, or in Harry’s case, an unspoiled memory from Professor Slughorn. It can even serve as a bit of a placebo: Ron found he was better at Quidditch just by *thinking* he had drunk some of this. The potion is immensely tricky to brew, but it might be worth becoming a fully-fledged Potioneer just to swing the odds a little better in your favour.

After all, with four books under our belts, and myriad magical characters we had already met and fallen in love with, the introduction of [Nymphadora Tonks](/features/nymphadora-tonks), the upbeat and clumsy young Auror took us by surprise – and she rapidly became a latecomer fan-favourite. We all know the fifth book perhaps saw Harry at his most-frustrated. After witnessing the return of Lord Voldemort and the death of Cedric Diggory, he was then forced to return to Privet Drive with no news on what was going on in the wizarding world, no letters from his friends and only his chilling memories for company.

When a bunch of rag-tag wizards, including (the real) Mad-Eye Moody, Remus Lupin, Kingsley Shacklebolt, and a few other members of the Order of the Phoenix turned up to rescue Harry, we knew we were entering an edgier instalment to Harry’s story, full of new, idiosyncratic friends.

## ‘The Advance Guard’

With her iconic, cockney greeting of ‘Wotcher, Harry’ Tonks was already a huge breath of fresh air after all the doom and gloom at the close of *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*. Accompanied by a tired-looking Lupin and a dishevelled Mad-Eye Moody (who had been kidnapped and plucked for Polyjuice Potion only a few months previously...) seeing the vibrant, interestingly-named Tonks turn up was a welcome bit of comic relief.

Sending the Dursleys away to an ‘All-England Best Kept Suburban Lawn Competition’ was a masterstroke move, and we were immediately endeared to this eccentric, violet-haired witch.

As the chapter progressed, she got even cooler when she went to help Harry pack his things – revealing a deep love of Quidditch and her rare Metamorphmagus status (meaning she can change her appearance at will).

She even shared a more sincere moment with Harry, rightly assuming he’d love to hide his lightning bolt scar sometimes. Tonks, where had you been all our lives?

It was also nice meeting someone like Tonks, an uncharacteristically young Auror with so much potential, a bit of relatable clumsiness and a carefree attitude when talking her to her mentor, Mad-Eye Moody. It made us feel like, if we grabbed a few bottles of hair dye, we could be cool like Tonks too. 

## Why it matters

As Harry says to Fred and George at the end of *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, ‘we could all do with a few laughs’ ominously thinking about the dark times ahead. The introduction of Tonks, full of quips and one-liners, like a new embodiment of the Weasley twins, made us realise that even in the murkiest eras of the wizarding world, there would always be brightness along the way.

And thank Merlin for that.

Don’t you hate it when a house-elf that you’ve never met before pops into your bedroom, drops your auntie’s lovingly prepared pudding, and then leaves? 

Although it’s mortifying for Harry at the time, earning him a warning from the Ministry of Magic and bars on his window, the thought of Aunt Petunia’s beloved pudding smashing everywhere is the just desserts the Dursleys deserved. 

## And when all else fails – usually just the mere presence of the Dursleys can be entertainment enough

Although the short-sighted family made Harry’s life miserable, there were moments of pure ridiculousness that meant the entertainment was ready-made. Dudley trying to be respectable was a particular highlight.
