## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

But this was no ordinary competition...


## The history 

A notorious and perilous contest to its core, this particular tournament was like no other. Without giving you too much of a Professor Binns-esque history lesson, the story of the tournament went a little bit like this:

Dating back around 700 years, this contest of intelligence, courage and wizards-losing-their-minds-because-there’s-a-dragon-half-a-metre-away was traditionally held every five years between the three biggest wizarding schools in Europe: Durmstrang, Beauxbatons and Hogwarts.

After some, er, accidents (all three champions were injured in 1792), the contest petered out. That was until its revival two centuries later in 1994, when extra safety precautions were added by the organisers.

## The tournament
 
Muggle Olympics may have up to 300 events, but the Triwizard Tournament only had three tasks... and they were quite enough.

The rules were simple: each school was represented by a champion, chosen by the Goblet of Fire. The champions took part in three punishing tasks to win the Triwizard Cup, one thousand Galleons, eternal glory and probably eternal bruises. 

The revival of the tournament was made a lot safer by the addition of an age limit: only students aged 17 and over could apply. At least, that was the plan.

## An unexpected champion 

Although every tournament in history had only ever had three champions, Harry Potter found himself chosen as the unprecedented fourth. The other three champions were Fleur Delacour of Beauxbatons, Viktor Krum of Durmstrang and Cedric Diggory of Hogwarts.

## Triwizard arguments 

As with any sporting event, the tournament was not shy of politics behind the scenes. With Hogwarts having two champions, the mood turned sour as the school was seen to have an unfair advantage over Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.

To make matters worse, reports from *The Daily Prophet* neglected to state actual Hogwarts champion Diggory’s inclusion in the tournament, and cynics branded Harry a glory-hog and show off. Slytherin students even circulated ‘Potter Stinks’ badges.

## The first task 

By the day of the first task, 24 November, things were already heating up – which, to be fair, was probably also helped along by those huge dragons.

The challenge was to retrieve a golden egg from one of four immensely dangerous fire-breathing beasts, and somehow it ended with all four champions still intact. Potter and Krum came out in joint first place. Krum opted for a Conjunctivitis curse to confuse the dragon, whereas Potter went for the more sensible option of summoning his broomstick to play to his strengths as a skilled flyer.

## The second task

On 24 February, the champions, judges and supporters assembled at the edge of the lake for the second task. The merpeople had taken something that ‘you’ll sorely miss’ from each contestant, and the champions were given one hour to get it back. 

For all four champions, that missing *something* turned out to be an important person in their lives: Hermione Granger was Krum’s captive, even though they’d been hanging out for about a day; Ron Weasley was, of course, Harry’s; Fleur’s little sister Gabrielle was taken to spur her on, while Cho Chang was Diggory’s ‘sorely missed’.

Despite finishing third, it was decided that Harry would be awarded second place after Diggory for saving everyone and showing ‘moral fibre’. Good on you, Harry.

## Disarray on the judge’s panel 

Unbeknown to the outside world, the behind-the-scenes drama of the tournament was just as much of a whirlwind as the contest itself.  

Judge Bartemius Crouch went missing and mad, while Ludo Bagman was faced with spiralling debts. After betting on Harry to win, the former Quidditch star spent the majority of the tournament freaking the 14-year-old out by offering him unsolicited help.  

Of course, the wizarding world remained blissfully unaware of these strange goings-on. 


## The final task  

Going into the third task, Harry and Diggory were tied in first place with Krum in second and Delacour positioned third. 

On the evening of 24 June, the champions were tasked with traversing an imposing 20-foot-high maze full of obstacles, creatures and riddles. Little did Cedric Diggory’s fellow students or family know that this would be the last time they would see him alive. 

Cedric and Harry made it to the centre of the maze and both clutched the Triwizard Cup as joint winners. But instead of enjoying a double victory for Hogwarts, the pair were thrust into unexpected danger.

## Hogwarts in mourning 

The Triwizard Tournament was rocked forever when the Cup turned out to be a Portkey, which took Cedric and Harry to a graveyard far from Hogwarts where Diggory was killed by Peter Pettigrew. Harry managed to escape and return his fellow champion’s body to his family. 

There were many deaths in Triwizard history, but Cedric’s was a defining moment and arguably marked the point at which the tournament stopped being a contest and became a war.

[Draco Malfoy](/features/draco-malfoy "Draco Malfoy") spent most of the series as one of those characters we just love to hate. He treated most students like they were beneath him, was quick to insult, and often resorted to dirty tactics… but we think maybe there was hope for him yet.

## ‘Malfoy Manor’ 

In *Deathly Hallows*, there was a moment where it felt like all was lost. After months of unsuccessful searches for Voldemort’s [Horcruxes](/features/the-horcruxes "The Horcruxes"), Harry, Ron and Hermione were taken by Snatchers, and transported straight into the belly of the beast, [Malfoy Manor](/features/malfoy-manor "Malfoy Manor").

[Harry](/features/harry-potter "Harry Potter"), who was disguised with a swollen, puffy face thanks to [Hermione’s](/features/hermione-granger "Hermione Granger") Stinging Jinx, must be identified before he’s given to [Lord Voldemort](/features/lord-voldemort "Lord Voldemort"), with the Malfoys, [Bellatrix](/features/bellatrix-lestrange "Bellatrix Lestrange") and [Fenrir Greyback](/features/fenrir-greyback "Fenrir Greyback") hungry to present him to the Dark Lord. One word from Draco would seal his fate. 

Draco’s parents were alive with ecstasy, with [Lucius Malfoy](/features/lucius-malfoy "Lucius Malfoy") convinced that catching Harry Potter would put him back in favour with Lord Voldemort. But Draco, for the first time in his life, was almost speechless.

## Why it mattered

Why did Draco hesitate? He could have got rid of his rival once and for all and restored the Malfoys to their former glory.

But the events of *Half-Blood Prince* took their toll on Draco. Though he entered sixth year with the usual sneer and swagger, he appeared nervous and dishevelled as time passed. Secretly he’d been initiated into the [Death Eaters](/collection/characters-deatheaters "Death Eaters") and told to kill [Professor Dumbledore](/features/albus-dumbledore "Albus Dumbledore"). Draco quickly realised that he was in over his head and began to crack under the pressure.

Seeing death permanently changed the way a person sees the world. Draco witnessed his kindly old headmaster struck down in front of him and and the Muggle Studies teacher [Charity Burbage](/features/charity-burbage "Charity Burbage") was tortured and killed in his own home.

We forget that Draco was still only a boy and seeing innocent people tortured and killed was not something he was prepared for. Until recently, Draco seemed to have lived a charmed and sheltered life; he’d never been poor like [Ron](/features/ron-weasley "Ron Weasley"), accused of having ‘dirty blood’ like Hermione or suffered the loss of a loved one like Harry. 

It could be said that his childish slurs against Muggle-borns and ‘blood traitors’ came not from a place of hatred so much as one of ignorance. Perhaps if he’d understood the weight of his words Draco would have been more careful about how he wielded them. 

> Harry saw Draco’s face up close, now, right beside his father’s. They were extraordinarily alike, except that while his father looked beside himself with excitement, Draco’s expression was full of reluctance, even fear. 
> ‘I don’t know,’ he said, and he walked away towards the fireplace where his mother stood watching.

Then the moment finally arrived when Draco had the chance to redeem himself. So many thoughts must have been racing through his mind: maybe he felt remorse over helping the Death Eaters, who’d already claimed many innocent lives. He knew all too well what would happen to Harry and his friends if they were handed over, yet his parents would be proud and grateful beyond measure. 

Draco was torn between loyalty to his family, fear of Voldemort and worry for his former classmates. But Draco could not just flit from one position to another in one fell swoop – and instead of denying it was Harry completely, settled for a passive, ‘I don’t know.’

## A disinclined Death Eater 

We wonder if Draco’s hesitancy in this moment suggested that he had cast aside the boyish fantasy of being a powerful Death Eater; that he finally understood the horrifying reality of serving Voldemort. 

It’s tragic that he had to grow up so fast, but we can respect how much he changed. By refusing, Draco finally took a stand and stopped another innocent person being brutalised.

Harry, accompanied by the spirits of his dead family and friends, approaches Lord Voldemort prepared to die.

Actions have consequences – Draco learnt that the hard way. Harry would later risk his own life to save Draco from the Fiendfyre. [Narcissa Malfoy](/features/narcissa-malfoy "Narcissa Malfoy") would then lie to Voldemort – an extremely dangerous person to lie to – and spare Harry to hear that her son is alive. Thanks to all of this, Voldemort would be defeated and peace would return to the wizarding world. Much of this can be traced back to that one pivotal decision in Malfoy Manor. 

[Draco](/writing-by-jk-rowling/draco-malfoy "Draco Malfoy by J.K. Rowling") proved himself to be a stronger, braver and more sympathetic character than most of us gave him credit for, and how terrifying the pressure of his Death Eater father had on his entire life. It made us rethink the path he’d taken and the person he became. Most importantly, it showed us the power of redemption and how we can all learn from our mistakes.

1. The intro to *Prisoner of Azkaban* is so dark and brooding. Welcome to the party, director Alfonso Cuarón! This is the only Harry Potter film Cuarón directed, so it’s particularly special.
2.	The arrival of Marjorie Dursley and her bulldog. Some pets really do look like their owners… 
3.	Or perhaps the owners look like their pets.
4.	Aunt Petunia is remarkably calm as her sister-in-law swells up like a balloon. Perhaps Petunia secretly doesn’t like Marge that much… 
5.	Streetlamps flickering, playground swing set creaking ominously, see-saw see-sawing. Yep, something creepy is about to happen. 
6.	Like the arrival of a giant black dog with glowing eyes… 
7.	But before Harry can investigate further, the Knight Bus screeches to a halt – and we get to meet good ol’ Stan Shunpike! We’ve always wanted to travel by Knight Bus. Those beds look surprisingly comfy and cosy… 
8.	Sirius Black’s screaming mugshot on the cover of *The Daily Prophet* is genuinely terrifying. 
9.	‘Oh come now, Harry. The Ministry doesn’t send people to Azkaban for blowing up their aunts.’ We miss the laidback Cornelius Fudge of yesteryear. 
10. *The Monster Book of Monsters* is rather cute, despite trying to bite Harry’s face off. 
11.	The first scene with Ron and Hermione and already they’re fighting like cat and dog – about Crookshanks and Scabbers.

40.	We repeat: one of the best teachers Hogwarts ever had.

42.	‘Not only was she a singularly gifted witch, she was also an uncommonly kind one.’ This line from Remus, about Lily Potter, always stands out as one of the most beautiful from the films.

46.	Should we cancel this match? Nah, clearly a little bit of lightning is character building. 
47.	RIP Harry’s Nimbus Two Thousand. Give the poor thing a Viking funeral – it’s what it would have wanted. 
48.	How on earth did Fred and George work out how to use The Marauder’s Map? Actual geniuses. 
49.	We actually can’t believe they parted with that map. It’s probably the noblest thing they’ve ever done. 
50.	Hogsmeade in winter is so pretty, but don’t get distracted by the scenery because Professor McGonagall and Cornelius Fudge are about to deliver a very important explanation…
51.	Harry’s first Patronus may not be corporeal, but that he manages to do such a difficult spell at all is impressive. 
52.	Hagrid feels so strongly for all living creatures– it’s one of the most beautiful things about him. His grief over Buckbeak’s death sentence is palpable.

77.	Expelliarmus really is Harry’s signature move. 
78.	Harry’s all, ‘Can we get back to Peter Pettigrew, guys?’ Which is a very valid point. Sorry, Harry. We got distracted discussing your duelling technique.

80.	And just as it appears that everything might work out okay. Then the real villain of Prisoner of Azkaban appears… the full moon.

87.	Poor Ron gets left behind due to his Siriusly mauled leg.

97.	Professor Lupin resigns, but not before imparting some excellent life advice to Harry. 
98.	Sirius may be Harry’s godfather, but Remus is perhaps the most stable father figure to him throughout the entire series. He’s kind, endlessly compassionate, and level-headed. Sob.

## Harry had his first kiss

After a bit of a false start in his previous year, Harry was slightly more successful with girls during *Order of the Phoenix*. He finally started going out with his crush, Cho Chang! However, like many teenage relationships, Harry’s wasn’t a roaring success. Cho was still grieving for Cedric Diggory – even crying during their first kiss. And the least said about *that* Valentine’s Day date in Hogsmeade, the better.

## The Order of the Phoenix

With Voldemort’s rise imminent, Harry was introduced to the titular Order of the Phoenix. The Order was led by Albus Dumbledore, and last convened during the first wizarding war in the fight against Voldemort. It wasn’t long before Harry met the 2.0 version, and discovered it contained a lot of old friends: Molly and Arthur Weasley, Remus Lupin, Sirius… and some new ones, like Tonks – a chirpy Metamorphmagus – and Mundungus Fletcher, a shady character with a strong odour of burnt socks. Together, they formed quite the ragtag gang.

## Number twelve Grimmauld Place 

You’ve heard of haunted houses, but inside number twelve Grimmauld Place is a true horror show. Owned by Sirius Black’s family, the dusty dwelling became the unlikely venue for the Order of the Phoenix, with Mrs Weasley making it her personal mission to make it less grotesque and horrible. Due to Sirius’s family’s much darker way of life, the house wasn’t exactly cosy; the walls were mounted with house-elf heads, a screaming portrait of Sirius’s mother was permanently stuck to a wall, and all the while the house-elf, Kreacher, roamed the corridors muttering dark things about ‘blood traitors’ all day long. 

Apart from that, it was lovely.
