Own a part of [Hogsmeade](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) history with the legendary Shrieking Shack. Don’t let the name put you off… Once dubbed the most haunted building in Britain, we have been assured that it contains no traces of Dark magic whatsoever, and all werewolf hair has been removed. Within a stone’s throw of the popular Hogsmeade amenities (we highly recommend The Three Broomsticks for the best [Butterbeer](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/butterbeer) in Britain) it even has direct access to Hogwarts School.* Oozing with rustic charm, The Shrieking Shack is a renovator’s dream. Could you be the person who takes this shack from haunted to heavenly?

*A member of our team will gladly meet you with protective equipment at the Whomping Willow should you choose to access the building this way.

This self-contained apartment has been perfectly preserved for over a thousand years, deep beneath the famous Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Exclusively commissioned by a Hogwarts founder, it was once thought to exist only in legends. Upon entering, you’ll see why. The huge main chamber is breathtaking; decorated in a grand, classical style, the intricate serpentine stone-carvings adorning the pillars are works of art. The central statue of [Salazar Slytherin](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/salazar-slytherin) makes for an attractive centrepiece for any party.

Speaking of parties, the thick stone walls render the chamber completely soundproof and cool, even in the summer heatwaves. Not to mention the fun entrance slide through the water pipes, which will be a hit for any children coming to visit. Enemy of the heir or not - we suggest you snap this one up!

This handsome manor house, nestled among acres of beautiful parkland in Wiltshire, has been a crown jewel of the English countryside for centuries. The sumptuous hallway leads to a huge, ornately decorated drawing room. With a 30-foot-high ceiling, an impressive marble fireplace, and a recently restored crystal chandelier, the room can easily fit 25 people around a table, making it perfect for hosting decadent dinner parties... Or committee meetings.

The manor boasts dozens of beautifully adorned rooms, and a generous, versatile cellar, perfect for storing precious artefacts away from sunlight. The meticulously cultivated gardens play host to stunning albino peacocks that roam the elegant grounds; they look almost as proud as you will if you make this your home! For viewings: wizards from all-magic families are preferred, but please contact one of our agents who will be happy to negotiate with you for the right price.

## Aragog's Lair

Built deep within the heart of the [Forbidden Forest](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/locations/the-forbidden-forest), this family-sized home is the perfect quiet haven, just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of Hogwarts. Made from completely organic materials, you’re sure to have a deep night’s rest under the shelter of the trees here.

However, if you are a night-owl, the view is spectacular. The lovingly crafted hollow creates a natural clearing in the forest’s canopy, so you’ll be able to star-gaze into the early hours. Nature-lovers: this dwelling should reel you in! For those with arachnophobia, we can suggest some alternative woodland retreats.

A short commute to the [Ministry of Magic](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) and King’s Cross Station, this grand town house is perfect for those who want to be in the middle of the action but hidden from Muggle detection.

While seemingly narrow from the outside, the house extends in surprising ways. Some of the spacious bedrooms are even big enough to house a fully-grown [Hippogriff](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/creatures/hippogriff).

Once home to the famous [Black family](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-black-family), this property has played host to a glittering array of celebrated wizards, including Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter. Recently decontaminated, it has virtually no pest problems* or damp. All sinister portraits have been removed or covered so that only the Black family tapestry has remained, adding much historical value to the property. If you’re looking for a city base with a story to tell, this is a great choice!

*If you do come across a [Puffskein](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/creatures/puffskein), feel free to keep it as a pet.

## The Riddle House

spookiest-locations-described-by-an-estate-agent-text-section-7

Overlooking the charming chocolate-box village of Little Hangleton, this impressive manor house strikes a grand, stately silhouette on the rural skyline. We won’t deny that this property has a chequered past. However, it’s been decades since anyone died there, and once you discover the comfortable rooms and attractive garden, you’ll wonder why anyone called it “creepy”. Imagine the fireside stories you could tell your guests with such a [fascinating history](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/into-the-pensieve-frank-bryce).

If you need further convincing, a lovely little church and a pub are just a short stroll down the hill, where you’re sure to receive a warm welcome from the Muggle community. At a heavily reduced price, it would be a grave error to miss out on this one.

A private recess on a dramatic coastline; this is not your typical seaside holiday home. If you’re looking to swap the fish and chips and candy floss for an invigorating dose of salty sea air, this cryptic cave is for you.

Difficult to access by foot, it’s an ideal base for a reclusive adventurer: the treacherous cliff topd descent will certainly keep you on your toes. Within, the cave has plenty of space, and fantastic acoustics. The central feature is a huge, ethereal-looking lake, which you can peacefully row across when you need some undisturbed inspiration.* If you’re looking for a true statement home, then this cave is to die for.

*We advise that you bring your own bottled water and a means of fire with you, as this is quite a remote location.

Spells and potions a first-year learns at Hogwarts

## Transfiguring matches into needles

As Professor McGonagall says, [Transfiguration](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration) is complex and dangerous magic. We are talking about changing the molecular structure of an object to transform it into something else, after all. Given a group of 11-year-olds, some who have never used a wand before, it’s therefore advisable to… start small. In the golden trio’s first Transfiguration lesson, the students were tasked to do as prefect Percy Weasley predicted: turn matches into needles.

hbo-harry-potter-series-1-harry-acufors-transfiguration-screenshot

HBO-S1-teaser-screenshot-acufors

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-2

The *Acufors* spell (the incantation of which is revealed in the [new HBO series teaser](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/watch-the-new-teaser-trailer-for-hbo-original-series-harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone)) might seem simple, but it’s much harder than it looks. Despite Harry giving it his best effort, Hermione was (predictably) the only one in the class who managed to successfully transform her match into anything remotely resembling a needle in her first lesson, earning her a ‘rare smile’ from the firm but fair McGonagall.

## The levitation charm

Probably the most memorable spell that Harry, Ron and Hermione learnt in their first year, [*Wingardium Leviosa*](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-levitation-charm) got them out of more than a few scrapes over the course of their school careers. First-years usually begin by levitating light objects like feathers, then gradually progress to heavier items (like, say, a motorbike’s side car) if they get the technique right.

hbo-harry-potter-series-1-ron-casting-spell-troll

hbo-2-alastair-stout-web-landscape

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-3

Although a basic spell, it’s important that the movement and the pronunciation of the charm are correct. As Professor Flitwick demonstrated in the trio’s first-year Charms class, the ‘swish and flick’ is fundamental. Hermione's insistence on the correct pronunciation ‘Wing-*gar*-dium Levi-*o*-sa’ might have had Ron rolling his eyes, but it was a good job he was listening to her… That mountain troll incident would have ended very differently otherwise.

## Transfiguring a mouse into a snuff-box

HBO Original Series Photo Gallery 11

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-4

By the time the trio got to their first end of year exams, they had progressed from matches and needles to… small rodents and boxes. It might not be as impressive as McGonagall turning her desk into a pig, but it’s getting there. It should be noted though that if the snuff-box still had whiskers, points were docked.

## Remembering a Forgetfulness potion

Nothing quite says ‘exam panic’ like a practical [Potions](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/magical-miscellany/potions) test with Professor Snape breathing down your neck. In Harry’s first year, the students were subjected to trying to remember how to make a Forgetfulness potion. After mixing Lethe River water, Valerian, and Mistletoe berries, you then… Oh, we’ve forgotten the rest.

## Making a pineapple tap dance

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-6

Professor Flitwick’s practical exam for the first-years was exactly what it says on the tin… making a pineapple perform a tap dance. Is it the most useful spell in the world? No. Do we respect Flitwick for inventing a Charms test designed purely for his own entertainment? Yes.

## Everything else Hermione managed to learn

We may only see inside a handful of first-year lessons at Hogwarts… But that’s not to say that some scholarly witches and wizards haven’t tried a few more ‘simple spells’ outside the classroom. Enter Hermione Granger. In addition to the magical curriculum, the brilliant witch performed these striking spells within mere months of realising she could even do magic:

### The bluebell flames spell

Who knew how useful producing fire would be? Well, our ancestors we suppose, but still… Hermione’s ability to conjure up bluebell flames came to the rescue more than once in her first year. Carried in a jam jar, they were the perfect portable heater for a chilly stroll through the Hogwarts courtyards. When she suspected a certain teacher of foul play during a Quidditch match, they served as a well-timed distraction. Faced with a killer plant that hates heat and light, she had a sure-fire way to defeat it.

### The ‘tricky little charm’

hbo-harry-potter-series-1-gryffindor-quidditch-banner-charm-screenshot

hbo-s1-teaser-trailer-tricky-little-charm-screenshot

spells-and-potions-a-first-year-learns-at-hogwarts-text-section-8

Hermione’s creativity and house pride shone through with this charm to support Harry in his first ever Quidditch match against Slytherin. Capping off a crafternoon with her classmates, Hermione’s impressive spell made the paint on their homemade Gryffindor banner light up, complementing Dean Thomas’s hand-drawn lion roaring to life. In case you missed it, you can see this glorious moment in the [latest teaser for the HBO Original Series](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/watch-the-new-teaser-trailer-for-hbo-original-series-harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone)!

### The unlocking charm

Hermione’s mastery of [*Alohomora*](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-unlocking-charm) may have opened the door to a ferocious three-headed dog who looked ready to attack her, Harry, Ron and Neville (new fear unlocked) but it did help them uncover what was being hidden at Hogwarts. What’s an adventure without a little danger, anyway?

### The full Body-Bind Curse

Note to selves: Don’t get in between Hermione and the Gryffindor common room exit when she knows [*Petrificus Totalus*](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/spells/the-full-body-bind)…

Neville’s arms snapped to his sides. His legs sprang together. His whole body rigid, he swayed where he stood and then fell flat on his face, stiff as a board. Hermione ran to turn him over. Neville’s jaws were jammed together so he couldn’t speak. Only his eyes were moving, looking at them in horror.

## First things first, why not see the magic on the big screen?
![HP-F1-philosophers-stone-dumbledore-baby-harry-privet-drive-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/5wexkbsYVwMSM8rRfUGI0G/56a0631de075bc6e345f03fc3141fa2a/HP-F1-philosophers-stone-dumbledore-baby-harry-privet-drive-web-landscape)

From the moment [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) first appeared in [Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive), we knew that the Harry Potter films were going to be something special. Honestly, we still get emotional remembering what it was like to see [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) on screen for the first time. With that in mind, what better way would there be to celebrate the anniversary of the first film than recreating that extra-special cinema experience?

Luckily, over the Back to Hogwarts period, the sounds of ‘Yer a wizard, Harry’ will be ringing out in cinemas around the world as *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* will make a return to the silver screen. Grab your popcorn, your nearest and dearest and go back to where the magic began.

## You need to embrace the nostalgia

Speaking of heading back in time, with it being almost a quarter of a century since the first film came out, it’s safe to say that the world we live in now looks rather different to how it did back then. Which is why we think another brilliant way to celebrate the anniversary would be to embrace the warmth and nostalgia of the world of Harry Potter.

## Go behind-the-scenes

## Why not throw your own 25th anniversary party?

Over here, we love a good Harry Potter party and think that the anniversary is an excellent excuse to dust off our glad rags and throw a spectacular soiree! However, actually planning a party can be rather daunting, so we’ve got a few helpful hints to make this one magic.

how-to-have-your-own-harry-potter-and-the-philosophers-stone-25th-anniversary-celebration-text-section-6

## Find your ideal theme

First things first, no party is complete without a theme. You might be wondering isn’t the first film a theme by itself? Yes, absolutely! You could definitely throw the most memorable event based on the film in its entirety. However, as the wizarding world is so vast and varied, it would be equally cool to home in on one element or theme from the film.

![HP-F1-sorting-ceremony-students-great-hall-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/2Ub5Iulp4tF2CxS1k1DZNT/1d6083622ef690688bf0b81caa847977/HP-F1-sorting-ceremony-students-great-hall-web-landscape.jpg)
Why not lean into the idea of Harry’s first [Sorting Ceremony](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-sorting-ceremony) and encourage a bit of friendly house rivalry? You could decorate your party space with the house colours and mascots, come dressed as your favourite character from your house and even sort all of your friends into their houses!

![HP-F1-harry-looking-at-hogwarts-letter-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/txYmSmIhvlJ6nZHnPrQzl/805e5f9798f91e0875a514ebf6a03d9d/HP-F1-harry-looking-at-hogwarts-letter-web-landscape.jpg)
With this being a celebration of the first film and Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, we think it would be fun to take the idea of ‘firsts’ one step further and centre everything on Harry’s first experiences of the wizarding world – like sending your guests their [very own personalised Hogwarts Letter](https://www.harrypotter.com/linkout?destination=https%3A%2F%2Fharrypottershop.co.uk%2Fproducts%2Fpersonalised-hogwarts-acceptance-letter%3Futm_source%3Dwwd_web%26utm_medium%3Dnewsarticle%26utm_campaign%3DShop%26utm_content%3D25th-anniversary-celebration).\*

![HP-F1-philosophers-stone-harry-hermione-devils-snare-web-landscape](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/5QvxBkoeDBnsmxYxye7xO/5ac2509a9e8a7e848a5f181e1a1e7a89/HP-F1-philosophers-stone-harry-hermione-devils-snare-web-landscape)
Or add an extra splash of excitement to the proceedings with a ‘Through the Trapdoor’ inspired party – complete with all sorts of weird and wonderful games based on the trials that the trio faced.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/XdGkaTi6Yio?rel=0" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Honestly, there is so much to dig into. If you need more inspiration, we think taking a look at our 25th anniversary compilation will help to get your creativity flowing.

## Craft the perfect decorations

Once you have settled on your theme, it’s time to make your vision a reality with some excellent decorations! For those who are fans of the homemade, why not put your crafting skills to the test and relive the moment Harry saw Hogwarts for the first time by building your very own [magical castle](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/create-your-very-own-hogwarts-castle)? Just imagine the looks on your guests faces as they see your stunning recreation.

Or perhaps you want to take inspiration from the end of year celebrations from the first film and fill every surface with your homemade house banners and colours. [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) may have won in *Philosopher’s Stone* but that doesn’t mean your party couldn’t be a celebration of every house! You could even make these fun [Hogwarts house bookmarks](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/make-your-own-hogwarts-house-bookmarks) for each of your guests.

## Casting the golden trio
We have to kick things off by talking about the new [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter), [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) and [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger). With over 40,000 Harrys considered, finding the actors to perfectly personify these characters was no easy feat. Yet, once Alastair was found in Manchester, Arabella in London and Dominic in Glasgow, it was clear that this was a combination that had its own kind of magic.

Not only do each of these actors already seem to embody their characters (we love the fact that Dominic auditioned with a poem that he wrote himself) but they already seem to be hanging out together and playing rock, paper, scissors like a bunch of best friends. With the series set to play out over the next decade, we can’t wait to see their relationship grow.

## The nature of magic
![dark-train-photography-hogwarts-express-web](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/58bx4iCNAbTNWnW91OwIa3/b5d5edd30e10527e74c396232f3c3789/dark-train-photography-hogwarts-express-web.png)

You couldn’t have Harry Potter without magic – it seeps into every part of the story. As the special revealed, the new HBO series is leaning into the power of magic by combining it with the power of nature. More specifically, the series fully leans into the idea that all magic is firmly rooted in the natural world, and this should be evident in every detail.

For example, the ideas of naturalism have been integrated into a lot of the sets. Take one look at the halls and corridors of [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) and you’ll see that they have truly brought the outside in – with creeping vines and sprawling trees as key features *within* the castle walls.

It’s not just the big design choices that evoke the wonder of nature but the smaller elements too. For instance, the new Chocolate Frogs – these hopping sweets are now green and have never looked more realistic! The pink and green colour palette of the packaging reminds us of lily pads floating in a pond. The new Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Bean packaging builds on similar principles too with its extremely intricate vine design.

## The emblems of Hogwarts
![dark-train-photography-golden-trio-web](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/1MU2aNY4U0iqhrB9leUR1v/8777e38653a917d0ab813fbc0839a2dc/dark-train-photography-golden-trio-web.png)

As we are on the topic of nature, it has even been incorporated in the house banners. Did you spot the [Ravenclaw](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ravenclaw) eagle and the [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) serpent? Not only have the mascots had a makeover, but the overall design is unlike anything we have seen in the Harry Potter world before with both banners containing a vine motif.

## Bringing the books to life
*Finding Harry* also revealed more blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moments that demonstrate how the television show is set to be a faithful adaptation of the books.

![hbo-finding-harry-announce-article-hero](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/0qOJc2c4eEv6ysFjwCvTh/8a52a1125c04b77c46c5c61d28270e82/1200x800.jpg)

This image is a treasure trove of these – especially when it comes to Ron. Did you spot the [Chudley Cannons](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-chudley-cannons) badge, the symbol of his favourite [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) team, on his jacket? Or the bruise, which is a result of his scuffle with Malfoy in *Philosopher’s Stone*, on his cheek?

our-favourite-reveals-from-hbo-max-finding-harry-the-craft-behind-the-magic-text-section-5

## New Wands
![dark-train-photography-hermione-granger-web](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/7n15h8515s0MrXQs1qroxT/be2e3e53dc513cd5b60f083ed488a845/dark-train-photography-hermione-granger-web.png)

Three [Gryffindors](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) also had their wand designs clearly displayed in the special. The eagle-eyed among you may have spotted Hermione, [Parvati](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/parvati-patil), and [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) brandishing theirs! Whilst each are unique, from Hermione’s twisting pattern to Neville’s (well, his dad’s) branch-like design, the idea of magic in nature is once again at the forefront.

our-favourite-reveals-from-hbo-max-finding-harry-the-craft-behind-the-magic-text-section-6

## The Muggle world
![dark-train-photography-petunia-vernon-dursley-web](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/3H545KNaSVGs4CSZfYCzmo/98f47156c0e85192f969bd1a1b3b85a4/dark-train-photography-petunia-vernon-dursley-web.png)

We also need to take a second to admire just how fantastically mundane the [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) world is – especially when it comes to [Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive). The Dursleys’ house perfectly matches all the other houses on their street, with no attempt at being unique or even a hint of whimsy. Their world is clearly distinct from the wonder of the magical world and extremely recognisably Muggle.

This continues inside number four, where there is no escaping the 90s – not with that choice of wallpaper. The Dursleys’ house is an accurate reflection of them as a family. A family that prided themselves on being perfectly normal thank-you-very-much.

In fact, the only bit of originality can be found in the cupboard under the stairs. Yes, it is a small, dark and miserable space but it is one that Harry actually tried to make his own – thanks to some carefully hung drawings.

our-favourite-reveals-from-hbo-max-finding-harry-the-craft-behind-the-magic-text-section-7

## The magic of costumes
![dark-train-photography-albus-dumbledore-web](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/nnPzlsieZmqcrdrHE6KII/362d35bafdb4bb7232f11f35923fcc83/dark-train-photography-albus-dumbledore-web.png)

Costumes are a crucial part of bringing the world of Harry Potter to life and this behind-the-scenes special has some fascinating insights into their creation. From hand painting and marbling clothing to printing leaves on fabrics, nature was not only the inspiration for these designs, but the key to bringing them to life.

After all, when you print with leaves, there is a natural magic to the process. You don’t know what you are going to get and the beauty lies in the imperfection – ideal for creating costumes for eccentric characters such as [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore).

This celebration of nature extends beyond colours and details to the materials used for costumes like the Hogwarts uniforms. Rather than using synthetic options, they were all created from natural fabrics such as British wool and organic cotton.

Whereas the costumes of the Muggle world are heavily influenced by synthetic materials often used in the 1990s. With a pastel colour palette and a penchant for shell suits, these outfits are in complete contrast to their magical counterparts, drawing attention to the huge differences between these worlds.

## The Great Hall
In Finding Harry, Janet McTeer, aka [Professor McGonagall](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall), revealed that walking into the [Great Hall](/fact-file/locations/the-great-hall) for the first time was like walking into a cathedral. We have to say that we agree with her. From the decorative door to the carvings on the columns (including the house symbols), there is nothing plain or boring about this space. In our opinion, it would more than hold its own against any famous cathedral when it comes to grandeur.

## The Potions classroom

Lit by candles and covered with cauldrons, textbooks and ingredients, the special unveiled yet another iconic Hogwarts location – the [Potions](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/potions) classroom. Brilliantly designed, it manages to walk the line of making you feel as though you are underground in the dungeons, right in the bowels of the castle, while still managing to retain the warmth associated with the enchanting atmosphere of Hogwarts.

## Diagon Alley
Instantly recognisable as the heart of the magical community in London, the set of [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley) was also revealed during this behind-the-scenes journey. With familiar favourites, such as [Gringotts Bank](/fact-file/locations/gringotts) and [Ollivanders](/fact-file/locations/ollivanders), reimagined for the new series, the street itself encapsulates the ramshackle charm of the wizarding world with its wonderfully eccentric shops complete with handcrafted details.

our-favourite-reveals-from-hbo-max-finding-harry-the-craft-behind-the-magic-text-section-11

## Magical creatures
The impressive craftsmanship that went into this series even extends to the creation of the wizarding creatures. Each animatronic animal was carefully constructed using research, talent and painstaking attention to detail – it took 36,000 feathers to build one owl!

Viewers were also treated to seeing a wizarding pet up close. In the new series, [Scabbers](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers) is an extremely realistic looking animatronic rat! They even have one model that bites! It’s enough to make you believe in magic.

The new Harry Potter series will also debut magical creatures that have never been seen on screen before – like the Dugbog. Taking inspiration from nature, the creature effects team have succeeded in making a realistic, if rather slimy, magical creature.

Speaking of slimy, we finally get to see what a Flobberworm looks like and can confirm they’re brilliantly gross.

## Platform nine and three-quarters
The final part of the special unveils the famous [platform nine and three-quarters](/fact-file/locations/platform-nine-and-three-quarters). From the murals on the walls to the scarlet [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express), it beautifully captures the magical realism of Harry Potter and makes us all the more excited for this brand-new journey back to Hogwarts.

## Arithmancy

![Hogwarts PM B1C8M1 ChangingStaircases Moment](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/6yVf73NTFK0UCUSKWqcOag/d8e6c15e4500aa4e1e74c0d074e51bef/Hogwarts_PM_B1C8M1_ChangingStaircases_Moment.jpg)

__Catalan__

Arithmancy becomes Magimàtica in Catalan. When we break it down it appears that ‘magi-’ is for magic and ‘màtica’ for matemàtica (aka maths). If maths had been magic at school, we would have paid far more attention.

__Danish__

In Danish, this subject also has a rather literal name, Talmagi, which directly translates to number magic – it does what it says on the tin!

__Dutch__

Seeing as Arithmancy is the art of predicting the future using numbers, as the rough translation of Voorspellend Rekenen is predictive calculating, this seems spot on!

__Finnish__

Sticking with the numbers theme, in Finnish the subject becomes Numerologia which directly translates to numberology.

__Hungarian__

Once again, numbers come to the forefront when directly translating the Hungarian version of the subject from Számmisztika to numerology.

## Charms

![FiliusFlitwick PM B1C10M2 CharmsClass Moment](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/3qDq1So6CseO6ek4MyuE0a/41f1755b77c83e22252a91e31297447c/FiliusFlitwick_PM_B1C10M2_CharmsClass_Moment.jpg)

__Italian:__

In Italian, Professor Flitwick’s subject becomes the whimsical sounding Incantesimi which roughly translates to enchantments or spells.

__Indonesian:__

The Indonesian version of Charms is Mantra, which directly translates to spells.

__Slovenian:__

There’s a theme emerging as we move through these translations, the Slovenian version of Charms is uroki which also roughly translates to spells!

__French__

Sortilèges is the French version of Charms – can you guess what it translates to? Yes! You’re right, Spells.

__Swedish__

Mixing things up a little, the Swedish version becomes Trollformellära – which has nothing to do with trolls but does roughly translate to spell craft.

## Divination

![Firenze PM B5C27 DivinationClassroomHarryRonFirenze](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/5KDmVd4YpiaMcIaW4cY4aK/07ecd1b480e6656576d0c21395438153/Firenze_PM_B5C27_DivinationClassroomHarryRonFirenze.jpg)

__Catalan:__

The Catalan version of Divination is Futurologia which translates to futurology. As Divination is all about predicting the future, this makes perfect sense.

__Finnish:__

Speaking of the word prediction, the Finnish version of Divination, ennustaminen, directly translates to that.

__German:__

Whereas the German translation of this subject, Wahrsagen, taps into the more traditional view of psychics as its literal translation is fortune telling.

__Hungarian:__

The Hungarian version is like the German with the subject being known as jóslástan which roughly translates to the study of fortune telling.

__Lithuanian:__

The Lithuanian plays into the unknown and (dare we say) often fraudulent elements of Trelawney’s class as Ateities būrimas which translates to future guessing.

## Herbology

![MandrakeSeedlings PM B2C6M2 MandrakeSeedlingsInHerbologyLesson Moment](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/23VZyGVSg8MyMieGeg04qk/f90f1d059b7998a78243b25c91a022e0/MandrakeSeedlings_PM_B2C6M2_MandrakeSeedlingsInHerbologyLesson_Moment.jpg)

__Dutch:__

Neville Longbottom’s favourite subject becomes Kruidenkunde in Dutch. When broken down it seems ‘kruiden’ translates to herbs and ‘kunde’ to knowledge/science/learning.

__French:__

In the Muggle world, the study of plants is known as botany. It also happens to be what Herbology is known as in the French translation – Botanique.

__Hebrew:__

On the topic of plant theory, this is what the Hebrew translation of Herbology, תורת הצמחים, means.

__Hungarian:__

Some of the magical plants in Professor Sprout’s greenhouses, such as the Mandrake, have brilliant healing properties. This is the idea that the Hungarian translation leans into with this subject becoming gyógynövénytan, which translates to herbal medicine.

__Swedish:__

Örtlära is the Swedish version of Herbology and its direct English translation is herbalism.

## Defence Against the Dark Arts

![AlastorMoody PM B4C14M1 MoodyTeachingAboutUnforgivableCurses Moment](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/3iDQHf8K4oEMAkqk8Iqs4E/70bf4b5f9dbdb87b3a767e9aa54ea933/AlastorMoody_PM_B4C14M1_MoodyTeachingAboutUnforgivableCurses_Moment.jpg)

__Catalan:__

The Catalan translation of Harry’s best subject is similar to the English as La Defensa Contra les Forces del Mal – defence against the forces of evil.

__French:__

It is the same story in French, where the subject is known as La Défense contre les forces du Mal which translates to defence against the forces of evil in English.

__Dutch:__

The Dutch variation, Verweer tegen Zwarte Kunsten, keeps the same start as the English version but translates to defence against black arts. Interesting, ‘Zwart’ (black) is often used to mean darkness when it comes to magic.

__Hungarian:__

The final word is the only difference between the Hungarian translation of DADA and the original, as sötét varázslatok kivédése is defence against dark spells/magic in English.

__Slovak:__

It’s pretty much an identical situation in Slovak as Obrana proti čiernej mágii translates to defence against dark magic.

## Potions

![SeverusSnape PM B1C8M2 SnapeTeachingPotions Moment](//contentful.harrypotter.com/usf1vwtuqyxm/4VcPqGNA3SMkW6sk6UookA/0635f76dc4ebd019b0f4764c980d0ea4/B1C8M2.jpg)

__Dutch:__

Potions becomes Toverdranken in Dutch which means magic drinks… extremely literal but very accurate.

__Finnish:__

The Finnish have the same no-nonsense approach when it comes to naming this subject as taikajuomat is also magic drinks.

__Lithuanian:__

We really like that the Lithuanian translation represents the duality of Potions as both a force for good and evil. The subject becomes Nuodai ir vaistai which is poisons and medicine in English.

__Slovak:__

Potions becomes Elixíry in Slovak which, as you have probably figured out, means elixirs.

__Slovenian:__

The Slovenian is extremely similar to the English where the subject is known as čarobni napoji which translates to magic potions.

## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

Despite being known for her exceptional brain power, [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) also knew the importance of nurturing the other elements of her personality too. It’s a lesson she learnt in her first year after finding genuine friendship. It is also one that we could do with remembering too.

The no-nonsense [McGonagall](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall) was a witch worth listening to! It’s all too easy to get caught up in the comparison trap, trying to think about who you *should* be and feeling inadequate next to others. However, you are brilliant just the way you are. You are one-of-a-kind. If the Head of [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) can see that – so can you.

A sage piece of advice from [Mrs Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley)! From making friends to job interviews, things are always easier if you start off on the right foot.
