## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

As a kid, I was a bit of a… okay, a massive geek. While I am in no way saying my level of intellect is close to Hermione’s, or that I was the cleverest person in my year group at school, I loved to learn and threw myself into every experience, just like Hermione would. I always did my homework, raised my hand in lessons, joined the debate team, got to the national finals of a children’s literature quiz and even won a prize for making the most effort in all of my classes. Very reminiscent of Hermione collecting up Gryffindor house points! 

To begin with I didn’t feel ashamed – I adored trying new things and broadening my horizons. However, as I grew up, I started to realise it wasn’t cool to be so enthusiastic. The social side of school was rather difficult, and like Hermione, I didn’t have the easiest time making friends. When reading the Harry Potter books, I could always empathise with the way she managed to get on the wrong side of her peers – including those closest to her. After all, it was Ron that called her ‘a nightmare’ with no friends back in *Philosopher’s Stone*. To be honest, I am pretty sure similar words were said about me.

It wasn’t just my classmates that found me to be annoying, it was also some of my teachers. There was one that suggested at a parents’ evening that it might be a good idea if I just put my hand up less. That was a devastating blow to my confidence. Not only did it seem like my peers thought I was too much, now my teachers did too. Every time I re-read the moment where Snape called Hermione an ‘insufferable know-it-all', I felt it deeply. It transported me right back to that humiliating time where I felt that I had to make myself smaller and hide a big part of my personality.

Nevertheless, despite connecting with the tougher elements of Hermione’s experience while at school, I could always turn to the stories and to her character for comfort. It was great to find a character that had similar difficulties to me, but it was even better to find one which I could draw strength and inspiration from. I admired the way she handled those situations – and especially the way she kept going. 

Hermione kept on learning as much as she possibly could and had confidence in her abilities. She never allowed the people who called her a know-it-all or exasperating to stop her. From the moment she burst into Harry and Ron’s train carriage on the Hogwarts Express, she was unapologetically herself. In fact, if she had allowed the nastiness of others to influence her, then the wizarding world would probably have been a very different place. 

There were so many times that Hermione was the hero of the story and came to the rescue. In her very first year at Hogwarts, she was the one that figured out the mystery of Nicolas Flamel. In her second, she solved the puzzle of the Basilisk – long before Harry and Ron. In her third, she was allowed to use incredibly complex magic to travel in time so she could cram in more studying. Hermione was the one who really helped Harry get ready for the Triwizard Tournament. The formation of Dumbledore’s Army was her idea. And out of the golden trio, she was the one that managed to be the most prepared for the Horcrux hunt. What makes her more brilliant, is that these are merely a handful of examples of the fantastic things she did – they barely scratch the surface. If Hermione had let the critics get to her and squashed her talents, where would Harry and Ron have got to?

That’s not to say Hermione always brushed everything off easily – she still showed vulnerability which only made her seem more relatable. Sometimes the animosity she faced did get to her. The most memorable incident being when she hid in the girls’ bathroom in *Philosopher’s Stone*. As a child, that was often described as ‘sensitive’, that more human side of her was reassuring. She proved to me that it’s how you move forward from hurtful things that matter, there’s no shame or harm in admitting something has caused you pain, but nothing good comes from allowing anyone to keep you down for too long.

This attitude is something that I still try to mimic as an adult. No longer am I the kid who felt as though they needed to curb their personality to suit those around them. I fully embrace my nerdy side and I don’t care if people don’t appreciate that part of me. I still enjoy learning and I won’t pretend to be less intelligent to stroke the ego of others. Luckily, I have found that as I have grown up and moved on from the confines of school, people actually like that part of me – which I didn’t believe was possible as a teenager. 

I am also sure that I’m not the only one to take these lessons from this character. There will be plenty of other geeky folk that found it a struggle to find their place and fit in. Yet, Hermione will always be there to show that you should never be ashamed to embrace who you are. That is why the cleverest witch of her age continues to be my hero today.

## Snape’s excellent comeback to Harry’s rather silly answer
The Head of Slytherin was rather talented when it came to sarcasm and biting comments – he certainly proved that it is far from the lowest form of wit. And while we know that Snape was unfairly targeting Harry, his response was still pretty funny.

## The way he had the utmost sympathy for anyone wanting to poison Harry Potter 
Snape and Harry were never going to be best friends. But Snape revealing that he would understand anyone’s desire to poison young Harry was dark humour at its very best.

## When he had enough of Harry and Ron’s chatting
While we definitely don’t condone violence, the comic timing of this scene was something else. Harry and Ron may have wanted to use their homework time to discuss the Yule Ball, but the Potions professor clearly had other ideas – Snape rolling up his sleeves before making his move was perfect.

## The way he says obviously
Nobody can say the word obviously quite like Professor Snape. The way he managed to undermine Umbridge – not to mention his deadpan delivery – makes this one of the surly Potions Master’s funniest moments.

Seeing that familiar handwriting on those now iconic-looking letters (conceived by graphic design team MinaLima) immediately catapulted us back into the wizarding world – and by the looks on the actors’ faces, they were transported right alongside us.

## Emma Watson seeing Tom Felton 

From the moment Emma Watson and Tom Felton clap eyes on each other in the Great Hall set, you can immediately see the bond this pair have as actors – despite playing adversaries in the films. Throughout the show, Emma and Tom talk candidly about how much love and respect they had for each other growing up – Hermione and Draco would be shocked!

## Robbie Coltrane’s mischief  

Rubeus Hagrid is very much a father-figure to not just Harry, but Ron and Hermione too throughout their Hogwarts journey – after all, what’s a bunch of adventures if you can’t debrief at Hagrid’s Hut afterwards? So, seeing Robbie Coltrane’s behind-the-scenes antics in full Hagrid costume brought real joy to our screens – especially seeing Robbie riff about trying to shave his big bushy Hagrid beard.

## Emma Watson & Rupert Grint’s heart to heart 

Losing touch with childhood friends is a hugely relatable feeling – and one we got to share with Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – who famously portrayed best friends (and soon – a couple!) in the films. Seeing Rupert telling Emma he still loved her, before chuckling “as friends”, was such a Ron-thing to do, and seeing the mutual admiration the pair still obviously have for each other certainly will have tugged on a few heartstrings! 

## Daniel Radcliffe reunites with Gary Oldman  

The Harry Potter films welcomed many huge acting powerhouses into the wizarding world family, many of whom we get to meet again in the show. From seeing Ralph Fiennes cheerily discuss his time as the evil Lord Voldemort to Jason Isaacs reminiscing about his time as Lucius Malfoy, you realise just how many veterans gave the magic touch to the Harry Potter series. We particularly enjoyed seeing Daniel Radcliffe reunite with his on-screen godfather Gary Oldman AKA Sirius Black – and seeing these two actors really relish in eachother’s company.

## The Weasleys reunited

We’ve always been jealous of the Weasleys and their cosy get-togethers at The Burrow, and here, we see Bonnie Wright, the Phelps brothers and Mark Williams enjoy a wholesome moment together in their family home again. Oh, to be able to grab a cup of tea and join them.

## Let’s hear it for the directors! 

It isn’t just the actors who we get to meet again – but the outstanding talent behind the cameras that really helped bring the Harry Potter magic to the screen. Every director involved in Harry Potter, including Christopher Columbus, Alfonso Cuaron, Mike Newell and David Yates all brought a unique vision to their respective films – and it is interesting seeing them all discuss their takes on the wizarding world in the show.

## Daniel Radcliffe’s letter for Helena Bonham Carter  

The great Helena Bonham Carter always brought such wickedness to her character, Bellatrix Lestrange, so seeing the actor be so cheeky reuniting with Daniel Radcliffe was brilliant to behold. Daniel Radcliffe recalling a letter he once wrote to her is a particular highlight.

## Honouring absent friends 

The show takes time and care to appreciate the people involved in the films who are no longer with us, with touching tributes to Helen McCrory, Alan Rickman and Richard Harris, to name a few. Seeing everyone’s names flash up on the screen was a deeply touching moment, especially realising just how many talented individuals worked on the series and have since passed on. 

## The golden trio

Starring in such a life-changing film series together from such a young age is certainly a daunting task, but Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint speak about their experiences so gracefully. From laughing about a memory arranging a funeral for Emma’s hamster, to emotionally admitting that they all had to be strong for each other as they got older was a truly cathartic scene.

## Everyone gets emotional  

From the moment we saw Robbie Coltrane’s lip wobble, we were absolutely gone. Yes, during the crescendo of Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, things start getting teary, as various cast members talk about their all-encompassing love for the wizarding world J.K. Rowling has created and their experiences with Harry Potter as a whole. Many cast members reminisce about reading the books (or learning about the books from family members) and how much the wizarding world has changed their lives - as well as ruminating on its legacy all over the world. 

Seeing the journey from page to screen develop throughout the show clearly means a lot to the cast and crew involved in this sequence. We’re sure there were a few tear-stained faces watching at home too!

## Hagrid could promise not to take in any illegal magical creatures
Norbert the dragon. Aragog the Acromantula. Hagrid didn’t seem to mind breaking the odd wizarding law when it came to magical creatures – even his Blast-Ended Skrewts didn’t seem completely legitimate. And his dalliances with keeping forbidden beasts never seemed to end well. Raising Aragog was why he was kicked out of Hogwarts. And who can forget the trouble Harry and Hermione found themselves in when sending baby Norbert to Charlie in Romania? So, in the coming year we think Hagrid would really benefit from causing a bit less creature chaos. He could promise to stick to rearing strictly legal creatures. Yes, they may not be quite as exciting (or dangerous), but he, and the others who helped him, would find their life was quite a lot simpler without the skulduggery and secrecy.

## Hermione could try to learn how to take a break every now and then
Hermione Granger could never be described as lazy. In fact, when it came to studying, writing essays, helping to secure the rights of house-elves, or defeating Voldemort, she always went the extra mile. However, being constantly on the go isn’t good for anyone. Sometimes you just have to relax and take it easy – or you could risk burnout. Even the cleverest witch of her age needs some time for rest and relaxation, though we don’t doubt she would find the concept tricky. So, we think Hermione should try to make some time for herself and occasionally switch off that big old brain of hers. Maybe she could try her hand at drawing. Or possibly practice mediation. Or take a long bubble bath. And if she really wanted to delve into another book whilst chilling, it should be something fun and light – and not another textbook.

## Professor Dumbledore could try to be a bit more transparent
The Headmaster of Hogwarts certainly was a mysterious fellow. Not only did he have a lot of secrets, but even when he did divulge some of them you couldn’t help but feel that he was holding something back. From what he saw in the Mirror of Erised, to why he could not face Grindelwald, to the fact that Harry was a Horcrux – he kept rather a lot of important things to himself and relied on the blind trust of those around him. Though Dumbledore did have strong reasons for keeping secrets, sometimes he should have been a bit more straightforward. We wouldn’t be surprised if those he asked a lot of sometimes felt a bit manipulated. Therefore to avoid that, he could make a New Year’s resolution to be a bit more open and see where it got him. You never know, he might be pleasantly surprised.

## Harry could learn how to accept help a little more readily
There’s no doubt that Harry had a bit of a saviour complex – though as the Chosen One it is understandable that he felt he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. However, he was also rather stubborn and didn’t find asking for help very easy. Yes, he was the one that had to defeat Voldemort but that didn’t mean he couldn’t have any help. There were so many witches and wizards who would have jumped at the opportunity – Ron and Hermione to name just two. While he did accept their assistance, it often took a fair bit of persuading. Yet as they say a problem shared is a problem halved and Harry would have been wise to take that on board. A good resolution for him would be to try asking for a little more help without feeling guilty. Not only would it mean that he didn’t have to suffer alone but it would make life a whole lot easier for him too.

## Professor Trelawney could focus on telling the truth
Ok, so the prophecy that Trelawney made about Harry and Voldemort may have come to pass. However outside of this, Sybill had told plenty of porky pies in her time. Whether she was ‘foreseeing’ an exorbitant number of terrible tragedies in Harry’s future, or just relying on Neville’s clumsy nature to predict that he would break a teacup – some (Hermione for one) may have thought she was a bit of a charlatan. For the sake of her reputation, it wouldn’t do Trelawney any harm to try being a bit more honest as her New Year’s resolution. She would probably find that people respected her more and didn’t question her gifts as a Seer if she just stuck to making truthful prophecies. You never know, it might even help to make Divination seem like  less of a joke subject.

## Malfoy could work on not being so snobby
If there was one thing you couldn’t call Draco it was humble. As part of the wealthy and influential Malfoy family, he was used to the finer things in life. There was also the unpleasant business of his family’s belief in pure-blood supremacy – which only added to their inflated egos. As a result of all of this, he had a rather stuck-up and unpleasant personality. So, we think that a fantastic New Year’s resolution for Malfoy would be for him to try and be a little bit more humble and to try acting with a little bit more kindness. While we know that would seem like an alien concept, and old attitudes and habits are hard to break, it really would help to improve his life and the lives of those around him. Whether it was thinking before he spoke or trying to do one helpful thing a day, he would soon see the benefits.

## The gorgeous snowy scenes and decorations
When you think of Christmas, one of the first things that springs to mind has to be snow – and the first film has it in spades. Who couldn’t look at it blanketing the Hogwarts grounds and not be reminded of the festive season? This was especially the case when we saw Hagrid dragging the huge Christmas trees across our screens and into the castle. The inside of Hogwarts was just as joyful – they always went all out when it came to decorations. Imagine how amazing it would feel to walk into the Great Hall and be surrounded by huge Christmas trees, festooned in baubles and ornaments. That’s how Christmas should be done.
