## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## 8: All the dancing
Yes, there were magical mazes, dangerous dragons and aquatic adventures in the [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament), but they weren’t the only tasks that needed to be conquered that year. Enter the [Yule Ball](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/yule-ball) – keyword being *ball* aka having to reveal your dancing skills (or lack of) to a [Great Hall](/fact-file/locations/the-great-hall) full of people. We’re sure there were some nimble-footed students at each of the magical schools, but for most of the students (and their teenage awkwardness) it was probably a mortifying challenge. Poor [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter), dancing was not his forte and he had to open the entire spectacle! While he thought he might die from embarrassment, the Yule Ball never really posed a threat to his life. Excruciating and a huge social test? Yes. Life threatening? Not really. This is why it is last place on our list.

## 7: Figuring out the infuriatingly difficult golden egg clue
You would think after battling a crochety dragon that saw you as an annoying but tasty snack, a Triwizard champion might get the chance to rest, recuperate and fully prepare for the next task. Alas, like most things in the magical world, it wasn’t quite that simple. Yes, the first task was over but there was the golden egg concealing a clue that needed to be dealt with – one with an ear-piercing screech. For Harry, that proved to be both unexpected and unwelcome. To solve it, not only did he have to sneak around the castle at night, but he had to take the advice of the [handsome champion](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cedric-diggory) who happened to be his romance rival – not ideal. Nevertheless, we have put this second to last because while it was tricky, and solving it only seemed to raise more questions, Harry did get to experience one of the [best baths Hogwarts had](/fact-file/locations/prefects-bathroom) to offer. Who doesn’t love a little pampering?

## 6: Putting your name in the Goblet of Fire
With the pressure, expectation… and risk of catastrophic injury or death, the wizarding world thought it best that only the oldest school students should be allowed to take part in the Triwizard Tournament (sensible). This meant using some clever magic, cast by [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) himself, to ensure no underage students could enter themselves into the competition. His Age Line appeared to work perfectly – as demonstrated by Fred and George’s glorious white beards. Then Harry’s name was called… the [Goblet of Fire](/fact-file/objects/the-goblet-of-fire) could be hoodwinked after all. It would take some seriously powerful magic to do such a thing. However, we think it deserves a place near the bottom of the list because if a wizard such as [Barty Crouch Jr.](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/barty-crouch-jr) could manipulate the competition, then there were plenty of others who could too. Yes, it was a challenge, but it was one that could be overcome.

## 5: The third task
Fifth place goes to the third task. You might be surprised to find this one quite so low on our list, but we do have our reasons. Firstly, this ranking only applies to the official task (what happened after was its own horrifying ordeal). There’s no doubt that the maze was the master of disorientation – overcoming a [Boggart](/fact-file/creatures/boggart), [Sphinx](/fact-file/creatures/sphinx) and competitors who weren’t themselves was no stroll in the park. The champions had to keep their wits sharp and their [wands](/fact-file/objects/wand) ready. Having said that, we think this was the least deadly of the three tasks. Experienced witches and wizards patrolled the maze perimeter, poised and ready to rescue any champion that found themselves in danger – they only needed to send up a shower of red sparks. The other Triwizard tasks felt like they had a little less of a safety net.

## 4: Successfully asking someone to the Yule Ball
We think a lot of teenagers would rather face one of [Hagrid’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) Blast-Ended Skrewts than ask their crush (to their *face*) if they would be their date to the Yule Ball. This unforeseen task felt positively Herculean. While [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) asking [Angelina](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/angelina-johnson) to the ball was a masterclass in smooth, many struggled. [Ron’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) attempt at asking [Fleur Delacour](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fleur-delacour) to the dance was positively harrowing – we’re not sure he ever quite recovered. And Harry’s garbled and mostly unintelligible attempt at asking [Cho Chang](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) gave us some serious second-hand embarrassment. Finding a date was a marathon, not a sprint, and tapped into every teenage insecurity and fear. Even when Harry and Ron successfully found dates... they didn’t end well. A perfect storm of humiliation, this has firmly earned its place in the middle of our list.

## 3: The first task 
Any task involving dragons deserves to be near the top of our ranking. After all, there is a reason they have been given the most dangerous [Ministry classification](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ministry-of-magic-classifications) (we reckon it might have something to do with their teeth, claws and ability to barbecue someone on the spot in a raging inferno). The champions had to survive, demonstrate brilliant magical skill and do it in front of an audience… no pressure then. However, one thing about this task, was it allowed each champion to play to their strengths – Harry [Summoning](/fact-file/spells/the-summoning-charm) his Firebolt was inspired. Being able to approach this task in myriad ways, plus having staff close enough to rescue you if things got too dicey, suggests it wasn’t quite the toughest task of the Tournament. Thrilling, dangerous but it could be tailored to each competitor.

## 2: The second task 
Out of the three expected Triwizard tasks, we think this was the one with the highest stakes. Why? Humans can’t breathe underwater. We don’t think we have to say much more than that. With teachers above the surface and champions below for a whole hour, if something went wrong… nobody would hear you scream. Ok, the [merpeople](/fact-file/creatures/merperson) would step in and alert those above, but they would have to be quick. Once your chosen method for breathing underwater failed, you’d only have a minute or so to make it back to the surface. Plus, nobody knows *exactly* what lives in the [Hogwarts lake](/fact-file/locations/the-great-lake). Anything could have been down there.

## 1: Getting through the year without ending up in a Rita Skeeter article 
With a legendary Tournament taking place for the first time in over 700 years, all eyes were on Hogwarts… including [Rita Skeeter’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rita-skeeter). She was *everywhere* – using secrets and twisted truths to leave an epic trail of destruction with her Quick-Quotes Quill. She might have taken a particular interest in Harry but nobody around him was safe – whether that was revealing the closely guarded truth about Hagrid’s heritage (sending him into hiding) or sharing twisted half-truths about [Hermione’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) love life (resulting in some rather *painful* hate mail). Yes, her illegal [Animagus](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/animagus) secret was eventually uncovered but not wasn’t until *after* the Triwizard Tournament had ended. Throughout the competition, Harry and his friends tried to avoid Rita’s poison pen. Yet, this was one task that proved to be impossible, sending it straight to the top of our list.

You’ve had your fair share of knockbacks – whether that was not getting your dream job, being on a losing sports team or just feeling as though people don’t expect you to succeed. But you don’t give up. You dust yourself off, try again and you achieve your dreams. People are wrong to underestimate you – just like they were wrong to underestimate Neville Longbottom.

If you have ever asked yourself what witches and wizards eat, we’re happy to tell you they often enjoy the same food as their Muggle counterparts – Harry was fond of a treacle tart. Yet, there are a few differences… especially when it comes to sweet treats and drinks. We’ve broken it down for you…

__Freshwater Plimpies__

Let’s start with one of the savoury… *delicacies* of the wizarding world. Plimpies are rotund, spherical fish, Unlike [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) fish, they have long legs with webbed feet. They might not sound particularly appetising – and we don’t know how many witches and wizards counted them as part of their regular diet. However, we do know that they were enjoyed by the rather eccentric Lovegoods. 

__Cauldron Cake__

This cake is readily available in the wizarding world. Although they were never really described in detail (we’re still curious to know what flavour they are), we imagine them to be cauldron shaped. They do seem to be popular – [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) often bought a bunch on [Hogwarts Express](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hogwarts-express) journeys. 

__Pumpkin Pasty__

Pasties are a common food in the Muggle world particularly here in Britain. Originating in Cornwall, they are semi-circular, savoury pastries that are typically filled with meat and vegetables – yummy! Witches and wizards seem to have their own spin on the humble pasty. While we imagine that the pastry base is the same, the pumpkin filling seems unique to the magical world.

## Sweets
__Acid Pops__

These lollipops are about as delicious as they sound… not at all. Extremely acidic, they can even melt flesh. A seven-year-old [Ron Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) discovered this when one burnt a hole right through his tongue. His brother, [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley), thought it was a hilarious joke. Their mother? Well, safe to say Fred felt the full wrath of [Mrs Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley). 

__Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans__

Watch out for these innocent looking sweets – you never know what flavour you will be lucky, or unlucky, enough to get next. These jellybeans might look like their Muggle counterparts – but we don’t think you will find many earwax or vomit flavoured beans outside of the magical world.

You can find this *interesting* food item in [Honeydukes](/fact-file/locations/honeydukes), and they do exactly what they say on the tin – they are lollies that taste like blood. [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) theorised that they were probably for the famous sweet shop’s vampire clientele… and we’re inclined to agree.

The sound of cauldron-shaped chocolates with a Firewhisky filling make our mouths water. Ron’s did too – he scoffed down a box on his birthday Unfortunately, that particular batch had been laced with a [Love Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/amortentia)…

Possibly the most iconic of wizarding sweets – these chocolates are delightfully frog-shaped. In the films, they also have a spring, or hop, in their step. The best bit about a Chocolate Frog though? The card. Each frog contains a card about a famous witch or wizard. Ron had over five hundred of these in his collection – though we wonder if he ever managed to find Agrippa.

__Cockroach Clusters__

With a name containing the word cockroach, who on earth would find this wizarding sweet appealing? Somebody must do, as they are sold in Honeydukes. We don’t quite know what is in them – though we can make a guess that it involves creepy crawlies. We do know that they slightly resemble peanuts because of Ron’s temptation to trick Fred into eating them.

__Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum__

Part of the Special Effects section in Honeydukes, Droobles is bubble-gum with an edge. The bluebell-coloured bubbles that you blow with this are rather reluctant to be popped and will hang around for days.

__Edible Dark Mark__
<br>
An ominous skull with a protruding snake, the [Dark Mark](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-dark-mark) was [Lord Voldemort’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) sign… and it never meant anything good – whether it was branded onto his followers, the [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters), or cast into the sky after an attack had taken place. The edible version? Well, that wasn’t pleasant either. Sold at [Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes](/fact-file/locations/weasleys-wizard-wheezes), it was a trick sweet designed to make anyone sick… yuck!

__Exploding Bonbons__

These tasty treats are only ever mentioned in passing but we guess they are a bonbon sweet with a habit of going bang!

__Fainting Fancies__

Part of Fred and [George’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley) iconic Skiving Snackboxes, we don’t know what these tasted like. We do know that they would knock you out like you’d been ‘hit over the head with an invisible mallet’ though.

__Fever Fudge__
<br>
Who doesn’t love yummy fudge? It’s a taste sensation! However, as another Skiving Snackbox creation of Fred and George’s, this one was more trick than treat. Those who ate this sweet could expect a horrible fever.

__Fizzing Whizzbees__
<br>
These sherbet balls are as yummy as they are fun. Whilst you are eating one, you’ll find yourself on cloud nine. Well, not quite… but you will be levitating a few inches off the ground!

__Fudge Flies__

Fudge? Yes please. Flies? No thanks. Hopefully these were just fudge in the shape of flies. However, they were a favourite of Ron’s rat, [Scabbers](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers)… so we can’t rule out that they might actually contain a few winged insects.

They might sound like another Fred and George invention, but these sweets are actually a product from Zonko’s Joke Shop. When consumed, we imagine they cause some spectacular hiccoughing.

__Ice Mice__
<br>
This rather *cool* sweet causes your teeth to chatter and squeak! One of Honeydukes finest, you can spot it in the Special Effects section of their shop.

__Jelly Slugs__
<br>
Rather straightforward, these are slug-shaped jelly sweets! They seemed to be a favourite at Honeydukes – needing to be restocked after visiting [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) students nearly cleaned them out.

__Liquorice Wand__
<br>
Part of the selection from the [Hogwarts Express trolley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/trolley-witch), these liquorice sweets are in the shape of wands. Liquorice can be rather divisive though. [Horace Slughorn](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/horace-slughorn) thought the trolley favoured them a bit too much – they played havoc with his digestive system! 

__Nosebleed Nougat__

If nougat is the same in both the Muggle and magical world, then it is a chewy and delicious sweet. However, this nougat was a Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes product that would leave you with a bleeding nose. While there were a few struggles during the testing phase – it ultimately proved to be the most popular Skiving Snackbox selection.

__Pepper Imps__

A sweet that makes you breathe fire? We’re sold! This Honeydukes sweet that makes you smoke at the mouth is found in the Special Effects section.

__Peppermint Toad__
<br>
Another Honeydukes classic, these peppermint creams are shaped like toads. Once eaten, they like to have a hopping good time – leaping about in your tummy just like a real toad.

__Puking Pastille__
<br>
As you can probably guess, this is another Skiving Snackbox sensation! Eat the orange half of this sweet and you’ll produce a magnificent fountain of projectile vomit. Manage to scoff down the purple end and you’ll stop – just like that. The perfect solution for getting out of boring situation… like a particularly dull [History of Magic](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/history-of-magic) lesson.

__Sugar Quill__

These sweets look like regular quills but are made of spun sugar. Why might you want one of these? Well, as Ron pointed out, you can eat it during a lesson and your teacher is none the wiser – you just appear to be thinking about what to write next.

__Ton-Tongue Toffee__

Toffee is known for getting stuck in your teeth… not so much for making your tongue swell to gigantic proportions. However, this was a Fred and George creation, and it did *exactly* that – as [Dudley Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley) once discovered.

__Toothflossing Stringmints__

While the magical world had a *lot* of sugary snacks, these are the sweets you might actually consider good for you – it is important to floss after all! Hermione even thought her dentist parents would love them.

__Ghost food__

We wanted to add a little nod to [ghost](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ghost) cuisine. Our spectral friends are unable to eat food – it literally goes straight through them. Though, if food is left out to rot and allowed to become particularly potent, they can pass through the dish and *almost* taste it.

__Butterbeer__

The wizarding world isn’t just a fully of magical food, it has an excellent line in wizarding drinks too ([which you can read all about here](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/a-guide-to-the-most-magical-wizarding-world-beverages)). However, as it is [Butterbeer Season](https://www.harrypotter.com/news/all-the-ways-to-celebrate-butterbeer-season-2025), we just had to mention the most famous of wizarding world beverages… [Butterbeer](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/butterbeer)!

This frothy drink warms your insides, is reminiscent of butterscotch and Harry once described it as the most delicious thing he had ever tasted – we’re sold! Served in both steaming flagons and bottles, this is a versatile wizarding drink – [Luna](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) even used the corks to fashion a rather fetching necklace.
