## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## 10: When Ron demonstrated the art of tact…
Ron Weasley is not someone you would describe as subtle. So, when Hermione tried to delicately raise the rather awkward topic of whether their friend Hagrid might be the heir of Slytherin, his response was very… Ron. It was snarky, witty and in this scenario, he definitely had the upper hand. Well played Weasley.

>After a long pause, Hermione voiced the knottiest question of all in a hesitant voice: ‘Do you think we should go and ask Hagrid about it all?’

## 9: When Hermione was not impressed with Ron’s homemade spell…
At number nine, we have the first time Ron and Hermione met. We think it’s safe to say that their first impressions of each other were not particularly positive – you certainly wouldn’t imagine they would end up happily married. However, in what could be considered their very first tiff, it was Hermione who came out victorious with a scathing putdown. 

>‘Oh, are you doing magic? Let’s see it, then.’ She sat down. Ron looked taken aback.
>
>‘Er – all right.’
>
>He cleared his throat.
>
>‘Sunshine, daisies, butter mellow,
>Turn this stupid, fat rat yellow.’

>He waved his wand, but nothing happened. Scabbers stayed grey and fast asleep.

## 8: When Ron kept turning the lights off…
Ron had a particular knack for getting on Hermione’s nerves and this moment was no exception. While we do understand Hermione’s frustration (Ron’s constant use of the Deluminator would be infuriating), we still think that it was Ron that managed to have the last word during this round of bickering. Though we do think he was very brave… or foolish to answer back to an already annoyed Hermione.

>‘Will you stop it!’ she cried on the third evening of Kreacher’s absence, as all light was sucked from the drawing room yet again.

>‘Sorry, sorry!’ said Ron, clicking the Deluminator and restoring the lights. ‘I don’t know I’m doing it!’

## 7: When Wingardium Leviosa was involved…
This is one time when Hermione demonstrated that winning a tiff isn’t always about having the snappiest or funniest retort. In fact, proving yourself as a talented witch will do the job for you. Ron may have tried to bait Hermione into failure, but she confidently and capably called his bluff.

>‘Wingardium Leviosa!’ he shouted, waving his long arms like a windmill.

>‘You’re saying it wrong,’ Harry heard Hermione snap. ‘It’s Wing- gar-dium Levi-o-sa, make the “gar” nice and long.’

## 6: When Ron was planning to do a bit of light reading…
We think Ron’s response to Hermione’s hunt for her textbook was brilliant. However, as Ron wasn’t brave enough to say this one within Hermione’s earshot (and face the inevitable consequences), we can’t really rank it any higher than this.

>‘No,’ said Hermione shortly. ‘Has either of you seen my copy of Numerology and Grammatica?’

>‘Oh, yeah, I borrowed it for a bit of bedtime reading,’ said Ron, but very quietly.

## 5: When Ron discovered Hermione was a girl…
Ron really could be quite dense. Having been close friends with Hermione for the best part of four years, you would think that he may have noticed that she was a girl. But apparently, he had not. So, when he finally had that momentous epiphany, Hermione was there to quickly bring him down a peg or two.

## 4: When Hermione told Ron what the solution to his Yule Ball woes was…
When it came to the Yule Ball, Ron really didn’t cover himself in glory. Rather than enjoying himself, or at least being honest about his feelings, he managed to put a dampener on the event for quite a few of the guests. When his insecurity and jealousy led him to pick a fight with Hermione (yet again), we were pleased that she was the winner of this battle. It’s not often that Ron is left completely speechless, but Hermione managed to do just that.

>‘Well, if you don’t like it, you know what the solution is, don’t you?’ yelled Hermione; her hair was coming down out of its elegant bun now, and her face was screwed up in anger.
>
>‘Oh yeah?’ Ron yelled back. ‘What’s that?’
>
>‘Next time there’s a ball, ask me before someone else does, and not as a last resort!’

## 3: When Ron asked Hermione an important question…
It was unusual for Hermione Granger to forget that she was the cleverest witch of her age – but it happened here. When Ron, Hermione and Harry found themselves dealing with the deadly Devil’s Snare, Hermione lost her head entirely. Luckily Ron was there to not so subtly remind her of just exactly who she was. While he possibly could have been a little bit more tactful, it certainly did the job, and he certainly had the upper hand in this instance.

>‘Devil’s Snare, Devil’s Snare ... What did Professor Sprout say? It likes the dark and the damp –’
>
>‘So light a fire!’ Harry choked.
>
>‘Yes – of course – but there’s no wood!’ Hermione cried, wringing her hands.

## 2: And Hermione bided her time for the best comeback… 
It’s rare that the ideal opportunity for revenge presents itself – but for Hermione, it did. A good seven years after Ron’s initial putdown, it was Hermione’s turn to put him in his place – and she did so in style. We very much enjoyed that she used a nearly identical comeback and can’t help but think that it may have been deliberate.

>Panting and gasping Harry slowed down, skirting the Willow’s swiping branches, peering through the darkness towards its thick trunk, trying to see the single knot in the bark of the old tree that would paralyse it. Ron and Hermione caught up, Hermione so out of breath she could not speak.

>‘How – how’re we going to get in?’ panted Ron. ‘I can – see the place – if we just had Crookshanks again –’
>
>‘Crookshanks?’ wheezed Hermione, bent double, clutching her chest. ‘Are you a wizard, or what?’

>‘Oh – right – yeah –’

## 1: The famous teaspoon incident…
There could only be one winner in this top ten of Ron and Hermione’s best bickering – and how could it be anything other than this memorable moment? Having delivered a highly perceptive monologue, Hermione clearly didn’t have time for Ron’s nonsense and unleashed the most perfect, and blunt, comeback. 

>A slightly stunned silence greeted the end of this speech, then Ron said, ‘One person can’t feel all that at once, they’d explode.’
>
>‘Just because you’ve got the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn’t mean we all have,’ said Hermione nastily, picking up her quill again.

Now that you've listened to the extract, here's a few observations about Harry, Ron and Hermione's first meeting. 

## Introducing Hermione Granger 

When we first meet the bushy-haired Hermione Granger aboard the Hogwarts Express, she makes quite the first impression! Immediately, she regales Harry and his new friend Ron all about the spellbooks she's already read and what lessons she's looking forward to.

Poor Harry, who had only discovered he was a wizard a mere couple of weeks ago, suddenly realises just how much Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is going to teach him. Would you be as scared as Harry? Or more excited, like Hermione?

As for Hermione, we realised immediately that here was a future student who simply loved learning! We also learn that her parents aren't magical - in fact, they are Muggle dentists. Despite this, Hermione seems to know everything about the wizarding world already. But you'll soon learn that this character is quite extraordinary.

So, what did you first think of Hermione when we first meet her? Was she too hard on Harry and Ron, or do you admire how over-prepared for Hogwarts she was?

## "Are you sure that's a real spell?"

During their meeting, Ron tries to turn his pet rat Scabbers yellow with magic. Unfortunately, the spell doesn't seem to work... probably because his mischievous twin brothers Fred and George taught him this one. When we get to Hogwarts, you'll learn about all sorts of spells that wizards and witches learn, but this definitely isn't one of them! You'll also learn that Ron's brothers do enjoy playing pranks on him...

What’s the difference between Muggle sweets & magical ones?

When Harry is on the Hogwarts Express, and on his way to wizarding school for the very first time, one of the excellent discoveries he makes is the sweets of the wizarding world. They’re certainly not like the kind of treats you would find in Muggle life! 

On that day he discovered Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans, Droobles Best Blowing Gum, Chocolate Frogs, Cauldron Cakes and Liquorice Wands – which all sound rather tempting. And let’s not forget there were plenty of other wizarding world sweets he had yet to discover.  

You might wonder what makes them special? And do they do anything interesting? The quick answer is some do.  

While the Chocolate Frogs in the book version of *Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone* stay quite still, the film versions hop like actual frogs! In both versions they come with cards that have pictures of witches and wizards who move – and don’t always feel like hanging around.  

There are also lots of weird, wonderful and downright disgusting flavours in a pack of Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Beans. Although Muggle jellybeans do come in a variety of tastes – they’ve got nothing on their wizarding counterpart. There are some traditional ones like chocolate and peppermint, but there’s also spinach, sprouts, liver and tripe. George Weasley even claimed to have had the misfortune of eating one that tasted of bogies! 

And though there are plenty of wizarding treats, some magical folk still have a soft spot for old Muggle classics. Albus Dumbledore himself was partial to a sherbet lemon/lemon drop after all.  

So, the difference between Muggle and magical sweets? You need to watch out for the pictures on the Chocolate Frog cards and be very careful which Bertie Bott’s Every-Flavour Bean you try!

This includes graphic design team Miraphora and Eduardo, who came together to create their studio MinaLima after working together on the Harry Potter films. From Daily Prophet newspaper covers to the infamous Marauder’s Map, the pair have designed and developed some of the most memorable Wizarding World pieces you can think of. Next year, the pair will release a book, "The Magic of MinaLima", showcasing some of their favourite memories, and continue to work on future Wizarding World projects. But before we go too far forward, let’s go back in time as the pair reminisce about the last two decades, in their own words.

## How we met 

__Eduardo:__ I arrived in the UK from Brazil in April 2001 and I think I contacted Mira around May or June. She was doing graphics here in the UK, working for a “wizarding boy film”. At the time I had no idea what it was! So, I contacted Mira, explaining who I was and where I came from – we have a mutual friend – and a short time later she sent me a very lovely reply saying she’d just finished working on this Harry Potter film and she was starting the second. So, I went to Leavesden where the Harry Potter films were made to meet her just for a chat, and met Mira and set decorator Stephenie McMillan, and since then, we just didn’t stop talking. 20 years later, we are still joined to eachother! But that memory is so good because I was surprised that Mira replied to me. She was so kind and lovely.

__Mira:__ That word “surprise” keeps coming up over the past 20 years. Looking back, you think, “Gosh, that was a surprise, getting the gift of eight films for the best franchise ever!” And it was a surprise to work with someone that you actually completely 150 million percent connect with. And then we set up our own studio, another surprise. At the end of the films in 2010, people would ask us if we were sad about them ending, because it was like a real era, and those eras only happen once you get to the end of them. But it was clear to us that this was just the beginning of a new chapter. And again, with that element of surprise: a MinaLima studio just happened! And then between the bookends of 2010 and 2021, we started growing a team of three people to 30 people... and becoming a business that’s a craft.

## Life after the Harry Potter films  

__Eduardo:__ When we wrapped production on the last film, a few months’ later, we opened up MinaLima’s studio in Fitzrovia, London, our first little office. We thought the Wizarding World was done – but we didn’t know there was still going to be so much more. We had the opportunity to work for the theme park at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Parks & Resorts – and then another surprise – Fantastic Beasts came along!

Now we have a space in the new store, Harry Potter New York and we have our sister-shop in Osaka. There are still people now who ask us if we get bored working on Harry Potter, but that’s never the case because to our "surprise" – that’s definitely the right word! – every time it’s something completely new and completely different.

## Connecting to the fans 

__Mira:__ Getting to know the Harry Potter fans was a big part of our evolution. Once you know who your audience is, you start to have a conversation and a dialogue. It builds momentum, the more you understand what they want, they get excited, and it motivates you to do more. So, there’s a really lovely dialogue that we’ve built up with the fans. Had we never gone to that first fan convention; we would never have understood our place in the franchise. So, we took a different tangent and hopefully deliver meaningful work. I saw two girls in Slytherin robes the other day and just wanted to wind down my window and say something to them!

## How our work evolved across the Harry Potter films 

__Eduardo:__ I remember until up to *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, we weren’t sure if there was going to be another film. But then all the books started becoming films. Looking back, now we have all the books printed, and we all know these stories, but at the time we didn’t. At the end of each book, we asked, what is behind that door? Then we go through that door into the next book. But you have to make that door beautifully. And with graphics, we had to make some sort of legacy.

__Mira:__ As designers, it’s very natural now to be helped with technology. But on those first films I didn’t know how to use Photoshop!

__Eduardo:__ On the first few Harry Potter films, we just had an old computer. 

__Mira:__ But more importantly, we just didn’t have the learning. I just had never learnt the technical things that I now know. And having learnt them on Harry Potter, I now do them. But if you ask any designer if you’ve improved over 20 years, you’d hope they’d say yes. Just by ‘doing doing doing’ every day. If you ask any collaborative partnership in design, or the arts, in any way, they’re always sharing, springing information, ideas, and energy between them. And those are the things much harder when you’re on your own. We’ve always said the sum of the parts is much greater than us as two individuals. Now we have a fantastic team and they help us to learn. Every day you’re learning a new bit of something – we never thought we’d be designing Harry Potter books for example! That’s coming completely full circle. 

__Eduardo:__ Now when young people come to us and say they want to do graphics because of us, what can you say? 

__Mira:__ Even if one person says that to you once, that’s pretty awesome. 

__Eduardo:__ That is the main reward.

## Our role models 

__Eduardo:__ Without doubt, the people we learnt the most from was production designer Stuart [Craig] and set decorator Stephenie [McMillan]. They were our Dumbledore and McGonagall. And in Leavesden, it was like Hogwarts, actually. You arrived there like me, brand new to this country, and brand new to creating graphics for film. Leavesden was kind of a school where loads of amazing people came and because of Harry Potter this was allowed to happen – and because there were so many films – people were learning on the job and improving. So, you have amazing painters and propmakers and costumes.

## Memories with the cast and crew 

__Eduardo:__ There were so many situations before smartphones that I wish we could’ve recorded while working on the films. I remember one very well: Helena Bonham Carter turning up in our office in full costume with the teeth, wig and everything, and she sat with us for hours just chatting about design and graphics. I remember it was hilarious – we laughed for two hours and she was asking us questions. So those moments were amazing. Alan Rickman walking around in full costume talking to everyone, and in full character, telling children to eat their greens in the canteen... Dumbledore with his beard in a bag... And seeing Emma, Rupert and Daniel coming to our office asking for help with their school art projects. We used to lend them scissors and stuff. So, it was an amazing family atmosphere. That was the No.1 thing about the Harry Potter films – we were between friends, and we were all thinking, let’s do the best we can to make these films better and better.

# Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s/Sorcerer’s Stone

__Mira:__ By coincidence, the first dabbling we had with the Wizarding World was Harry’s Hogwarts letter. 

__Eduardo:__ Mira had to be McGonagall and think how McGonagall would write that letter.

## Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 

__Mira:__ Gilderoy’s books! They were so tacky, but it was the first time we had to think: “how can a book convey the personality of the character?” That was a real opportunity to show his fraudulent character. 

__Eduardo:__ Those characters... him, Rita Skeeter, Umbridge... are so over the top and layered and rich so it was great designing graphics for them.

## Prisoner of Azkaban 

__Eduardo:__ It’s the Marauder’s Map. It was a very layered piece of work because Alfonso Cuaron was very involved on the design. That was great. When you have that strong relationship with a director – we would talk directly with him – you can see it in the props. This film is also the first time we see Honeydukes, as well!

## Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 

__Eduardo:__ All the Quidditch props for the World Cup.
__Mira:__ Which A lot of which, you didn’t see! But it was a real endeavour.

__Eduardo:__ The Daily Prophet: the film has a sequence of newspaper headlines and the film narrative is dark – so we needed to create something a little more serious.
