## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## If you’re adventurous... you’d have a broomstick! 

If you’re the outdoorsy type or enjoy Muggle sports (which sadly, usually take place on the ground) we imagine you’d love to get your hands on a Firebolt or a Nimbus 2000, or even just a Cleansweep Seven – anything to be quite literally whisked off your feet. The broomstick is one of the most sought-after wizarding world items, of course, so we imagine many of you would immediately pick this. You may not even fancy playing Quidditch, but simply want to go exploring.

In Diagon Alley, crowds of young wizards are usually found gazing in wonder outside Quality Quidditch Supplies’ window – and really, who can blame them? So, if you adore the outdoors and have a taste for adventure, we imagine you’d immediately be shouting “up” and flying off somewhere nice with your very own broom.

## If you’re solitary... you’d have the Invisibility Cloak 

Do you relish those stolen, quiet moments where, basically, everyone gives you a little peace? Then you’d likely enjoy the Invisibility Cloak; an opportunity to be perfectly inconspicuous. Think of how lovely it would be, after a hard day, to simply slip the cloak over your head and be left to your own devices. You could go anywhere without being bothered, no small-talk, nobody giving you leaflets. Harry usually used his cloak for solving mysteries or hiding from undesirable wizards. We would most likely use ours for when we wanted a time out at parties.

## If you worry a lot... you’d have a Sneakoscope 

This one is perhaps arguable – as the Sneakoscope is a device that whizzes around furiously if there’s someone untrustworthy nearby. Perhaps, if you’re someone with a tendency to over-worry, a Sneakoscope would make you worry more? Or perhaps you would feel validated, and prefer knowing that there is something to worry about? Nonetheless, a Sneakoscope may not relieve your anxieties, but at least you’d have a heads up that your concerns weren’t all in your head.  

## If you like to put on a show... you’d have enchanted fireworks 

Sometimes, Muggle inventions make their way into the wizarding world, but with some major enhancements. 

A good example of this is fireworks – which are bigger, brighter and far more animated than ours. There are different brands available, such as Dr Filibuster’s range, but don’t forget that the Weasley twins also have their own brand (Weasleys’ Wildfire Whiz-bangs) which they used to great, dramatic effect upon their epic exit from Hogwarts in Order of the Phoenix. A great way to advertise their products, too. Unlike our little Catherine wheels and paltry rockets, the Weasley twins’ fireworks were described as ‘pyrotechnical miracles’ and included sparkly dragons and never-ending firecrackers. 

So, next time you want to dramatically leave a room, kind of like how Fred and George did, these would definitely turn a few heads.

## If you love to travel... you’d have a Portkey 

Perhaps one of the most enviable elements of the wizarding world is that the community simply have far better public transport options than us. Even the Hogwarts Express has a far better food trolley than most of our Muggle ones.

Strictly speaking, a Portkey is usually an ordinary object, like a boot or a bucket, but placed with an enchantment to take you somewhere specific. This is how Harry got to the Quidditch World Cup, for example. Think of the possibilities you, a fervent traveller could have, with such an item always at your disposal. No admin, lugging heavy luggage or long plane flights required! Just imagine tapping a toaster and turning up in Thailand. Or patting a pencil and popping up in Peru. Or grabbing a guitar and galivanting off to Greece. Well, you get the idea.

## If you’re a perfectionist... you’d have a Time-Turner 

Have you ever thought of the absolute perfect comeback to say to someone who said something rude to you one time? Except you thought of it six days later? Now, with a Time-Turner, you could actually go back and say that incredibly witty thing to that man who barged into you at the post office. In fact, you could pop back whenever you wanted inside your own timeline and sort out all manner of minor mistakes you’ve made along the way. Finally! That garbled way you asked out that person you fancied could be rectified! You never dropped and smashed that entire jar of pasta sauce in the supermarket! You wouldn’t want to change anything too major, though – time travel is very complicated business. Just ask Albus Potter and Scorpius Malfoy.

## If you appreciate the finer details in life... you’d have some Omnioculars 

Ominoculars appear to be like Muggle binoculars but with far better features, basically. Harry learnt this when he acquired some at the Quidditch World Cup. 

So how would you use them? Perhaps you’re a keen photographer. Maybe you need a better pair of glasses, but you’ve not bothered sorting your subscription yet. But really, these Ominoculars would be perfect for anyone simply wanting to study their surroundings in excellent definition. 

And the best part of Ominoculars is that you can rewind things you have just seen and watch them over again. For example, you could relive a nice sunset or rewatch the moment a baby takes their first steps. Ron used this feature to... watch someone pick their nose. But maybe you appreciate the finer things in life. 

## If you’re a little scatty... you’d have a Remembrall 

We’ve all been in the shoes of a young Neville Longbottom, who had quite the reputation for being forgetful. This handy device, essentially a glowing orb that turns red when your mind fails you, was good for Neville – although didn’t actually tell him about the thing he’d forgotten. Still, we imagine this item would be ideal every moment you leave the house and realise you’ve left your keys, wallet or phone behind. Or perhaps it would simply never stop glowing – driving you a little bit mad. Still, we’d take it over the alternative.

When it comes to dealing with the blues, there is something to be said about the Wizarding World’s way of handling things. No, not magic. We’re talking positive thinking.

Look at the Boggart spell, for instance. Boggarts, as we know, are shape-shifting creatures that take the form of whatever the person in front of them fears the most. Even Muggles are able to feel a Boggart’s presence, which says a lot about the nature of fear. Because obviously, we don’t have to see a thing for it to make us feel anxious.

Witches and wizards get rid of Boggarts by making them comical – and while we don’t have the option of forcing fear into a funny hat, the idea of laughing at things that scare you is not new. There's the cliche of telling people who dislike public speaking to imagine the audience in their underwear. Or how we laughingly scream through old horror movies. And isn’t the way we share ridiculous (Riddikulus?) memes to help us deal with sometimes fearful situations kind of like point-ing our phones at all manner of unseen Boggarts in a bid to try and laugh them away?

OK, the Riddikulus spell only gets rid of the Boggart and not the underlying fear, but what it shows is the importance of attitude to a spell’s effectiveness – or, indeed, anything. It’s not just about ability; not always. With spells like this, it’s about your emotions.

When Lupin introduced Harry’s class to the Boggart, he asked them to think about their fears, and then to imagine how they might turn them into something comical. In other words: change your thinking and you’ll find your fears reduced. Basically, he introduced the concept of positive thinking.

The Boggart exercise makes this seem a fairly simple task, but given Lupin’s class was the be-ginning of a long series of practice sessions for Harry, it is clearly not easy. Add in external stressors (Dementors, Azkaban escapees, Blue Monday emails) and thinking positively becomes a lot harder. Even in the wizarding world. 

Nowhere is this more apparent than with the Patronus charm. That’s the big one. The defensive spell to end all defensive spells, and apparently the only one to have caused Hermione trouble. Because it’s extremely difficult. Like, extremely-advanced-magic difficult.

Now on paper, the Patronus charm doesn’t look all that different from the Boggart experiment: just think of a single, very happy memory whilst also saying the correct incantation.

Except when Harry first tried it, he couldn’t grasp it at all. Aside from the fact that saying one thing whilst doing something else is a feat of memory beyond magic, is it actually easy to think of a single, very happy memory? How happy is very happy? And anyway: how do you hold onto any memory when you’re surrounded by Dementors? 

Basically, the answer to all these things is practise (and, in the meantime, chocolate.) There are no shortcuts when it comes to casting a Patronus, although some characters struggle more than others. Hermione, for all her magical achievements, has a propensity to fixate on negative possi-bilities: her Boggart is Professor McGonagall telling her she’s failed her exams. This is clearly not helpful when it comes to the Patronus charm, which depends entirely on conjuring up positivity in the midst of a dark fog of misery.

Maybe that’s why Harry naturally excels at Defence Against the Dark Arts in a way Hermione doesn’t. His attitude to magic is instinctive and emotional, and while he’s not always expert at managing his mood he certainly knows how to focus his energies.

Although it’s not even just about practise and determination – Harry’s real breakthrough arrived in Prisoner of Azkaban, when he discovered that the Patronus he’d thought was his fathers was actually his own. In that Time-Turner-enabled scenario, Harry cast his first (or second, depending on where you are) fully-formed Patronus in the presence of actual Dementors, precisely because he thought he’d achieved it before.

> “‘I knew I could do it this time,’ said Harry, ‘because I’d already done it ... Does that make sense?’"

Success breeds success, after all. It’s like Ron when he thought he’d swallowed Felix Felicis. Once you think you can do something, you’ll start to do it unconsciously.

So: casting a Patronus is difficult, just as maintaining a positive attitude is difficult. They both take time, dedication and support – but get it right once, and it becomes easier every time. After all, if practise makes perfect it’s no wonder Harry was the Patronus expert. No other Hogwarts stu-dent had quite as many dealings with Dementors.

## ‘Salamander Eyes’ – Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald 

Newt Scamander has a tendency to be a little awkward at times (which is exactly why we love him) and the scene of him flirting (?) with Tina Goldstein was definitely that. But in a very sweet way. It’s not every day a girl gets her eyes compared to a salamander’s – but our favourite Magizoologist did always have a very unique outlook on the world. 

## Meeting Buckbeak – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 

We meet so many amazing fantastical creatures in the wizarding world, from the majestic to... well, Flobberworms. In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Hagrid introduced his class to Hippogriffs, a magical creature who will only engage with you once you have both bowed. Fair enough. This is a level of respect we can get on board with. In the film, we get to see Harry fly with Buckbeak during an exhilarating scene with an epic score. We want to be friends with a Hippogriff, basically.

## Luna’s friendship mural – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 

Harry, Ron and Hermione get to visit Luna’s house in Deathly Hallows, and it was no surprise to learn that the house perfectly corresponded to the Lovegoods’ quirky tastes. What did surprise us, in a very lovely way, was discovering that Luna had created a mural, dedicated to her Hogwarts friends, proudly on display in her bedroom. Harry was notably touched by the dedication – and so were we. 

## The Niffler has babies – Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

What’s cuter than a Niffler? Lots of multicoloured mini-Nifflers, that’s what. We were delighted to learn that Newt’s snouty friend had had children in the second Fantastic Beasts film, with the babies already causing all manner of mischief. The champagne cork slow-mo moment, for instance.

## Dobby is a free elf – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 

When we first meet Dobby, he is wearing a mangy pillowcase and has a habit of hitting his head on walls to stop him giving away secrets – all symptoms of being the Malfoy family’s house-elf. However, thanks to some sly sock sneaking from Harry, Dobby is finally granted his freedom, as his ‘master’ had given him clothes. Who knew a smelly sock would make us so happy?  

## A cosy Hogwarts Christmas dinner – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 

This bemusing scene from the third Harry Potter book found a very small collective of Hogwarts staff and students jammed together at Christmas time. Not surprisingly, very few students had stuck around that year, due to the threat of Sirius Black on the castle, not to mention the not-very-Christmassy Dementors hanging around Hogwarts. This resulted in a very strange concoction of people enjoying the festive feast with all the tables pushed together. Our favourite moments from it? Dumbledore offering a terrified young first-year called Derek some chipolatas, certainly. And a catty comment from McGonagall to Trelawney that still makes us smirk. Tripe, Sybill?  

## Everything is okay at the end – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 

Another moment from *Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets* now – and one of the most cathartic. After a year of horrors for Hogwarts, including Basilisk attacks on unsuspecting students and poor Hagrid sentenced to Azkaban, everything resolved itself at the end-of-term feast, with the Chamber of Secrets closed, the affected students ready to be cured and Hagrid’s triumphant return. This sequence of victories lead to a domino effect of emotions for us dear readers, and the film-version of events is even more emotional, with a huge rapturous round of applause at the end! Our tears! 

## Queenie visits Jacob’s bakery – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them 

Back to Fantastic Beasts now, and this reunion scene at the end of the film was a special one for all the Queenie and Jacob fans out there. After being forced to have his memory erased as part of the mass memory cleansing of New York, Jacob seemingly forgets about his adventures with Newt and his romance with the talented Legilimens, Queenie. Or does he? Working in his dream bakery, (where he has started subconsciously baking goods in the shapes of fantastic beasts) Queenie pops in to visit, stopping Jacob in his tracks as they both smile at each other. After a tear-jerking goodbye kiss left us wondering if Jacob would ever know Queenie again – this spark of recognition gave us hope.

## Molly and Harry’s hug – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 

This particular moment from Harry Potter is perhaps more bittersweet than feelgood, but a paragraph from the books we will truly never forget. After witnessing the return of Lord Voldemort, Harry is forced to relay the chain of events to Professor Dumbledore, before being sent to the hospital wing for some much-needed sleep, with Mrs Weasley, (who had come to cheer Harry on in the Triwzard Tournament) Sirius and his friends. Although Harry tries to be strong in front of them, Mrs Weasley tells Harry that nothing that happened was his fault – before giving him a hug that is described ‘as if by a mother’. Sob.  

## Harry learns how to cast a Patronus – Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban 

In the third book, Harry learns of a complicated charm that only works if you summon happy memories – the only way to combat the Dementors of Azkaban. After some frustrating beginnings (with the patient and wise Professor Lupin as his teacher) it is only towards the end of the story that Harry sees his Patronus for the first time – revealed to be a stag, the same as his father’s. As Dumbledore tells Harry, ‘your father is alive in you’.

## Luna comforts Harry – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix 

After losing Sirius at the end of *Order of the Phoenix*, Harry is beside himself with inconsolable grief. But it is not Hermione or Ron who finally get through to him, but Luna, a newer friend. After revealing that she lost her mother at a young age (‘it was quite horrible’ she says in a typically Luna-esque matter of fact way) Harry suddenly feels like he has someone who understands him a little better. And Luna promising Harry that the dead ‘never really leave us’ seemed to give him the comfort he so dearly needed. 

## Harry and Ginny kiss – Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince 

While Ginny fancied Harry first, it took until the sixth book for Harry to realise he fancied her too. Hurray! But what would Ron think? After a triumphant Quidditch win (spearheaded by Ginny, taking over from Harry while he was banned) the jubilant moment took over Harry, and the pair finally shared their first kiss in a very public fashion. Thankfully, Ron didn’t give Harry much of a hard time about it. 

## Harry learns that he is a wizard – Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone 

After eleven years as the neglected nephew of the Dursleys, Harry learns that this life is not meant to be, and he is actually a wizard with a whole other world ready to welcome him in. The first few chapters of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone* paint a sad childhood for Harry, confined to a cupboard under the stairs and constant coldness from his Aunt and Uncle – often a mystery to Harry. When a half-giant called Hagrid tells him the strange news over a campfire of sausages, Harry may not understand at first, but realises that he was never destined to be stuck with the Dursleys forever. 

## Ron and Hermione finally kiss – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 

After seven books – seven books! – we were beginning to think Ron and Hermione would never bite the bullet and get together, despite years of will-they, won’t-they moments, kisses on the cheeks, jealousy over other partners, and so much bickering you thought they were an old, married couple. For a moment, in *Half-Blood Prince*, we thought they might get together then, with Hermione asking Ron to be her date to Slughorn’s party. But as you know, that didn’t quite work out, not pointing the blame at anyone (Ron) and then Lord Voldemort and Horcrux hunting got in the way of things in Deathly Hallows. So what were the pair to do? Have their first kiss slap-bang in the middle of the battle of Hogwarts. ‘Is this the moment?’ Harry had to ask wearily. But still, we all turned the page with a sigh of relief.

In *Prisoner of Azkaban*, Harry is introduced to the Knight Bus, a triple-decker magical marvel that doesn’t exactly champion safe driving. This scene is just pure chaos and someone should take away Ern’s driving licence! Entertaining, though.

Picking a date for a party is always an awkward and anxiety-inducing moment in any teen’s life, perfectly exemplified by Harry and Hermione here.

This clip gets bonus points for Hermione hitting Harry after his ‘Chosen One’ spiel (making this our second entry for Hermione hitting someone!) and Luna’s extremely cool party dress where she looks like a pink Christmas tree. The best kind of party dress.

## Luna Lovegood

If there was any Harry Potter character that reminds us that the world isn’t that bad, with silver linings always to be found, it’s Luna Lovegood. The kind and eccentric Ravenclaw may have been made fun of at Hogwarts (her nickname “Loony” leaps to mind) but Luna’s only crime was having an open mind. 

Her matter-of-fact attitude to some of the darker moments in her life were encouraging to read (and watch!) so that we always felt calm in Luna’s company. 

From talking about the death of her mother (“She was a quite extraordinary
witch, you know, but she did like to experiment...”) to having her possessions stolen by horrible Hogwarts students (“They’ll come back, they always do in the end...”) Luna could always see the bright side no matter what. 

*The lesson Luna teaches us: remember that things can and will get better.*

## Hermione Granger 

Hermione was always a logical thinker, which meant she often had wise, practical solutions to problems. Good thing she was friends with Harry Potter, then, who tended to have quite a few problems for her to help solve. 

Due to her incredible mind, Hermione reminds us that there’s always an answer to the many conundrums life throws at us, even if we can’t immediately think of the answer. 

Sure, Hermione got upset like all of us do, but she was always a tower of strength to her friends. For example, she was a dabhand at ignoring the catty comments of Draco Malfoy, while idle Hogwarts gossip about her was like water off a duck’s back. She was also very good at telling Harry and Ron to ignore the more minor irritations of life – always focusing on the things that were more important. 

The pivotal moment from the Harry Potter stories, which really showed us how much inner personal strength Hermione had, was during the camping trip of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where Hermione was constantly on-hand to think of clever spells or words of encouragement during their search for Horcruxes. When Ron left the camp for a while, Hermione still managed to find the will to carry on, even when all hope seemed lost. This didn’t stop her from giving Ron a piece of her mind when he returned, though. And rightly so.

*The lesson Hermione teaches us: no hurdle is too big to overcome.*

## Arthur Weasley 

Good old Arthur Weasley never failed to put a smile on our faces when he turned up, always exuding a cheery disposition and easy-going attitude. If he wanted to, Arthur could’ve complained about a lot, such as his job not paying enough at the Ministry, or the unruliness of his sons Fred and George. But Arthur simply got on with it, and as a father of seven children, we were always impressed at his never-ending patience.

When Arthur was attacked during the events of *Order of the Phoenix*, we readers were deeply upset and worried about Ron’s dad – but thankfully – he was okay. In fact, in such good spirits was Arthur, that he even tried out Muggle stitches in the hospital for his injuries. 

That’s another thing we love about Arthur – he was always so welcoming of the Muggle community – although Mrs Wealsey was none-too-pleased about the Muggle stitches.

## Scorpius Malfoy

When we first met Scorpius on the Hogwarts Express in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, we were surprised to learn that Draco Malfoy’s son was actually quite nice. Thank Merlin that Albus Potter, Harry’s middle-son, met him. Scorpius’s always upbeat and proud-to-be-geeky attitude was exactly the tonic that Albus needed to get through the challenges of Hogwarts life – always ready with a sarcastic comment or even a little song about sweets.

Scorpius would always have a clever quip about whatever perilous situation the pair found themselves in, and despite his nervous disposition, he always knew he would be OK with his best mate by his side.

## Dobby 

This list would not be complete without darling Dobby, so here he is! It took a while for Dobby to fully embrace the joys of life (being the Malfoy family’s house-elf for many years certainly didn’t help) but once he found his freedom, via the medium of a smelly sock, he was always around to give help to those who needed it. Particularly for Harry, Dobby always made sure he had what he needed, whether that was simply advice, or, you guessed it, more socks.

We won’t bring up Dobby’s emotional final moment too much, because we may well up while writing this. But always remember that Dobby’s selfless good deeds brought out the kindness of others in more ways than one.

## Colin Creevey 

Our snap-happy Colin was a Hogwarts student bursting with enthusiasm, always around to document every magical moment. Born to Muggle parents, along with his brother Dennis, Colin just couldn’t believe his eyes when he joined Hogwarts, (who can blame him?) and Harry Potter quickly became his favourite subject. 

Colin’s positivity can be summed up, quite simply, by his reaction to his brother falling into the Great Lake.

‘Colin, I fell in!’ he said shrilly, throwing himself into an empty seat. ‘It was brilliant! And something in the water grabbed me and pushed me back in the boat!’

## Newt Scamander 

We finish off with our hero from *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them*, Magizoologist supreme Newt Scamander. [Newt’s shyness made him an unlikely hero](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/why-newt-scamander-is-a-different-kind-of-hero), but his respect for magical creatures and gentle nature simply revealed how patient and just he was in other walks of life. 

We also saw this attitude when he met Jacob Kowalski, being sure to treat a No-Maj like his equal – something that some wizards (especially in the 1920s) struggled to do. 

This open-minded nature and compassionate manner shouldn’t come as a surprise: Newt is, after all, a Hufflepuff. 

Our favourite quote from Newt that perfectly sums up his way of thinking about things? “My philosophy is that worrying means you suffer twice.”
