## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

On your new pins set, you’ll see one waiting for you on the packaging. In the Wizarding World app, there is some wicked sorcery that allows you to scan the code. Just tap the little key icon in the right-hand corner, hover over the key and see what unlocks. For every pin or pin set you buy, there will be a different mini-surprise for you to find, most likely connected to do with what’s on your pin. For example, if you have a Gryffindor pin, you’re not likely to see Draco Malfoy lurking behind it!

## What are secret codes? 

As well as unlocking keys, you can also type in codes, which are dotted around in all sorts of places, if you’re signed up for the [Harry Potter Fan Club](https://my.wizardingworld.com/register). Just like Enchanted Keys, codes unlock even more content just for you.

It could be a stray word in one of our newsletters. It could be in one of our articles. It could be anywhere, so always be on the lookout for random words that seem sporadically placed. If you’re a Harry Potter Fan Club Gold member, you’re likely to find them in even more nooks and crannies, such as in puzzles. The secret code is usually a familiar Wizarding World phrase, name, word or spell. Think of it like trying to get into the Gryffindor common room. And unlike Neville Longbottom, we don’t have a list of these written down anywhere for you! 

As such, we won’t tell you where the secret codes live... We’ll leave that to you to discover.

## Marvolo Gaunt’s ring

You’ll notice the words: pride, ambition, and cunning adorning this ring pin. These are all Slytherin qualities. An example of a person who possessed these traits – alongside loyalty and love – was Severus Snape.

## Slytherin house serpent

After school, he joined a mendicant religion as a friar. Unfortunately, the Fat Friar’s kindness was his downfall. His fellow clergy grew suspicious at his ability to cure the pox with nothing but a stick, and he was soon executed. Despite, the fact he apparently still resents that he was never made a cardinal, the Fat Friar really is quite a jolly fellow!

How Scorpius Malfoy proved everyone wrong about Slytherin

Before we begin, here’s a reminder of the part of the Sorting Hat’s song in *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, that specifically relates to Slytherin: 

*‘Or perhaps in Slytherin*

*You’ll make your real friends,*

*Those cunning folk use any means*

*To achieve their ends.’*

Does that tally with your understanding of members of Slytherin house? Here’s how we reckon Scorpius Malfoy helped us see Slytherins in a whole new light… 

## Slytherin and the value of friendship 
In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, our first experience of a Slytherin trying to make friends was Draco Malfoy entering Harry and Ron’s compartment on the Hogwarts Express. Now, we know he hadn’t yet been sorted into Slytherin, but it definitely still counted. Malfoy took one look at Ron, and attempted to befriend Harry – with a snide remark about stopping him from making friends with ‘the wrong sort.’ Not a great start for Slytherin social skills, if we’re honest. But contrast that with Scorpius Malfoy in Cursed Child. He greeted Albus and Rose with incredible warmth, even though Rose was immediately suspicious of him. Then, he shared his sweets with Albus – we can’t see Malfoy sharing anything with well… anyone… can you? 

As Malfoy continued at Hogwarts, he had two Slytherin sidekicks – Crabbe and Goyle – but it was difficult to know whether you could really count them as his friends. He ordered them around and regularly told them how stupid they were, but we never really got an insight into how this Slytherin really felt about the value of friendship. Scorpius, on the other hand, valued his friendship with Albus to the extent that he helped him no matter what – including physically throwing himself after him off of the moving Hogwarts Express! Scorpius was never scared to voice how important Albus’s friendship was to him – saying out loud how Harry Potter’s son was his ‘best friend’. 
This emotional honesty and transparency was something we hadn’t seen in a member of Slytherin house before… except perhaps, in the end, in Severus Snape – though he kept his true feelings hidden from most until after his death.

## Slytherin and self-esteem 
What many Slytherins throughout the Harry Potter series seemed to have had was high self-esteem. Draco Malfoy was convinced of his own Quidditch prowess, Pansy Parkinson was always pretty pleased with herself, and even Horace Slughorn had enough self-confidence to establish the Slug Club and never question whether students would want to join. But in Cursed Child, thanks to Scorpius, we saw a different side of Slytherin altogether. 

Teased relentlessly about the rumour that he was the son of Voldemort, Scorpius wasn’t exactly keen on talking about himself. When he did talk – to Rose Granger-Weasley, for example – he was less than self-assured, and often blurted out phrases that didn’t make any sense! Remember that time he told he she smelled like bread? And one of his most heart-breaking lines perhaps summed up this lack of self-esteem: ‘Come on mate, if there’s one thing we’re good at, it’s knowing where we’re not wanted.’ Oh Scorpius! Not exactly the kind of Slytherin we’re used to!

But what can we learn about Slytherin from all this? Well… if the Sorting Hat could sort Scorpius into Slytherin and this Malfoy still felt so unsure of himself – clearly lack of confidence doesn’t bar you from being chosen for the house of the snake. Perhaps there were lots of Slytherins just out of sight at Hogwarts who didn’t feel quite so confident, and perhaps the ones that seemed so self-assured, weren’t so confident on the inside after all? 

## Slytherin and a different kind of ambition
The Slytherins Harry met during his time at Hogwarts had certainly poured themselves a few cups of ambition. Draco Malfoy was so determined to be a Quidditch player, that he bought the whole Slytherin team brooms so he could play Seeker. Horace Slughorn sought to find the brightest and best of witches and wizards to advance the Slug Club and his connections. That’s not to mention the Slytherin Death Eaters we came across – Severus Snape, Lucius Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange – a thirst for power, to be close to Lord Voldemort, to change the wizarding world drove them on and over to the Dark Lord’s side.
 
Scorpius was ambitious too, but his aims were different. Scorpius just wanted to be liked, to have a friend, to go to Hogwarts and study and be happy. He was clever too, ambitious in his magical studies, for his own future. But Scorpius taught us that ambition doesn’t have to be linked to Dark magic or trying to be better than everyone else. He taught us that Slytherins can be ambitious in different, sometimes smaller, ways – but that doesn’t make your dreams any 
less important or worthy of achieving. And you can admit you’re just a little bit scared along the way…

The most important lesson we can learn from Scorpius Malfoy about this noble house, is that there’s no right or wrong way to be a Slytherin – and there’s certainly no reason at all to whisper, ‘Not Slytherin’ when you’re undertaking the Sorting Ceremony on [our website](https://my.wizardingworld.com/register). 
We didn’t always see the best of Slytherin house during Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts, but that doesn’t mean those Slytherins like Scorpius weren’t learning magic alongside him. And we have to admit the Slytherin colours of green and silver are pretty great!

## She is perceptive
Ravenclaws are perceptive, and Luna noticed all kinds of things others didn’t during her time at Hogwarts. There was that time she explained Ron in one sentence: ‘He says very funny things sometimes, doesn’t he?’ said Luna, as they set off down the corridor together. ‘But he can be a bit unkind. I noticed that last year.’ As well as when she actually saw through Polyjuice Potion when Harry had taken it to pretend to be Ron’s relation, Barny Weasley. Sometimes her perception, combined with her wisdom, went even deeper. Who else wept when she noticed that Harry needed a little helping hand after the drama of the Battle of Hogwarts? 

*‘Harry found himself sitting on a bench beside Luna.
‘I’d want some peace and quiet, if it were me,’ she said.
‘I’d love some,’ he replied.
‘I’ll distract them all,’ she said. ‘Use your Cloak.’
And before he could say a word she had cried, ‘Oooh, look, a Blibbering Humdinger!’ and pointed out of the window.’*


## She is full of wisdom
Luna might be wacky – remember those radish earrings? – but that doesn’t mean she’s short of wisdom, quite the opposite. We’re thinking in particular about that moment she talked to Harry about grief and loss, after Sirius was killed at the Ministry of Magic. She shared the personal story of her mum’s death at a time Harry really needed to hear it, and reminded him that the ones we love never truly leave us: 

*‘Yes, it was rather horrible,’ said Luna conversationally. ‘I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But I’ve still got Dad. And anyway, it’s not as though I’ll never see Mum again, is it?’
‘Er – isn’t it?’ said Harry uncertainly.
She shook her head in disbelief.
‘Oh, come on. You heard them, just behind the veil, didn’t you?’
 ‘You mean ...’
‘In that room with the archway. They were just lurking out of sight, that’s all. You heard them.’*

But it’s not just emotions she has words of wisdom about, she was always prepared when it came to her habit of sleep walking: 

*‘I’ve never been to this part of the castle. At least not while awake. I sleep walk, you see. That’s why I wear shoes to bed.’*

## She is intelligent
Intelligence manifests itself in many different ways, and we think Luna has it in cauldrons. Let’s not forget that it was Luna who was able to help Harry find the lost diadem of Ravenclaw—an important part of the journey on the way to defeat Lord Voldemort. And she then went on to answer the Ravenclaw door knocker’s riddle as to whether the phoenix or the flame came first under immense pressure. Rather her than us! When it comes to magic, Luna’s taste might have been rather individual, but it must have taken some seriously impressive spell work to make her Gryffindor lion hat roar so realistically. 
When it came to her theories about Crumped-Horned Snorkacks or Nargles, they might not have been based on much evidence, but she argued for her point of view passionately. She wasn’t even scared to tell Hermione she was wrong! 

## She has sadness in her past, just like her house founder 
Part of the reason there is a debate about Luna’s house is due to the fact that she would have made a pretty excellent Hufflepuff. Luna’s loyalty and kindness – key Hufflepuff traits – really did know no bounds. Luna insisted on coming to the Ministry to help her fellow DA members – it was her idea to ride the Thestrals. And Luna was one of only two members of the DA who were loyal enough to answer the call of the charmed Galleons the night Malfoy let the Death Eaters into Hogwarts. There’s no denying these traits exist, but we’d argue that part of the reason Luna shows so much empathy is down to the sadness in her past. And this tragic backstory is something she shares with the Ravenclaw house founder, Rowena Ravenclaw.

Luna’s mother died suddenly when she was nine, when one of her spell experiments went badly wrong. Whilst Rowena’s daughter stole her diadem, and ended up being murdered by a man—the Bloody Baron—who rather than fetching Helena back as Rowena had thought, killed her. Perhaps the tragedies in their pasts meant Luna had an extra affinity with Ravenclaw house. Though we’ll never truly know the secrets of the Sorting Hat’s decisions. 
 

## She fits right in with other eccentric Ravenclaws
Wouldn’t you just love to listen to fellow Ravenclaws Luna and Professor Trelawney having tea together? And let’s not forget that Moaning Myrtle was in Ravenclaw too! Remember when she turned up in the Prefects’ bathroom and just casually watched Cedric and Harry have a bath? Thinking outside the box and being eccentric certainly go hand in hand, although not all Ravenclaws wore their eccentricity quite so well as Luna. Gilderoy Lockhart’s luscious locks and purple clothes couldn’t hide the fact that under it all he was stealing memories. Not cool, Gilderoy. Not cool.

So, there we have it! Any Hogwarts house would have been lucky to count Luna Lovegood amongst its numbers, but with apologies to Gryffindor, Slytherin and Huffepuff – we reckon the Sorting Hat got it right with Ravenclaw! ## Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone: for the multi-talented
If you’re an all-rounder interested in all kinds of magic, you’d do pretty well saving the Philosopher’s Stone. To succeed through the trapdoor, you’d need to be the kind of person who pays attention in class – and we mean all classes. Herbology, Charms, Transfiguration, Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts all had important parts to play – and it wouldn’t hurt if you were a bit sporty either given that’d you need to catch those flying keys on a broom. But you’d also be well suited to this book if you’re curious and tenacious. Harry, Ron and Hermione never gave up on finding out who Nicolas Flamel was – and it took an awful lot of hours in the library before Harry recalled the name from a Chocolate Frog card. Oh yes, and you’d definitely be more suited to Philosopher’s Stone if you’re a dog lover… 

## Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets: for the brave at heart
How do you feel about spiders? Deathday parties? Spooky voices in the old castle walls? Giant snakes that’ll kill you if you look them in the eye? If all of these sound like just another walk in the Hogwarts grounds to you, then you just could be the perfect person to solve the mystery of the Chamber of Secrets and confront the heir of Slytherin. Warning – this book is not for the faint-hearted, and it needs someone who is both bold and brave, as well as a person who has a certain disregard for school rules – remember you’d need to brew up some Polyjuice Potion! Alongside those traits, you’d also have to be loyal, because we’re not sure anyone could slay a Basilisk without a little help from Dumbledore and his feathery companion, Fawkes. 

## Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: for the eagle-eyed intellectual 
An impossible escape from a high-security wizard prison. A dead man walking the halls of Hogwarts on a map that never lies. A rat that has been in the Weasley family for twelve years. And a Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher who is afraid of the moon. You’d be best suited to solving the mystery of Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew if you have a keen eye for small detail – a missing toe on a rat or a friendship between a cat and a big black dog, perhaps? Like Hermione, you’d suit this story if you’re the kind of student who really does their homework – remember how she looked up the Ministry register of Animagi? That’s some commitment. This story has some mind-boggling time-turning magic in it – so precision and cool intellect is absolutely key if you want to succeed in Prisoner of Azkaban.

## Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: for the competitive thrill-seeker
The Triwizard Tournament is one of the most notorious and perilous competitions in the wizarding world, and if that doesn’t want to make you run the other way then you could be a contender for the twists and turns of Goblet of Fire. You’d need to be the kind of person with a lot of self-confidence, who is not easily rattled – Rita Skeeter would be bothering you non-stop – and be able to keep your cool through three extremely dangerous and challenging tasks. Not to mention you’d need to be a very skilled witch or wizard. To consider taking part in the Triwizard is one thing, but lifting the Cup at the end? Now that would take someone serious grit, determination and a competitive streak to rival Oliver Wood’s. Also did we mention there are fire-breathing dragons? Rather you than us… 

## Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: for the rule-breakers
Standing up to Dolores Umbridge and defying her petty rules is what Order of the Phoenix is all about. If bending the rules and setting up secret societies is your flavour of Bertie Bott’s beans, then this is the book for you. Are you the kind of person who would risk a place at magic school to fight injustice? Are you brave enough to start an underground Defence Against the Dark Arts society in the name of Dumbledore? To face down expulsion, Umbridge’s wrath and that nasty quill of hers, you’d certainly need to have some clever tricks up your sleeve – like those Galleons of Hermione’s – and you’d also have to be good at keeping secrets, as well as have nerves of steel. Oh yes, and there’s that quick trip – possibly on an invisible skeletal horse – to fight all those Death Eaters at the Ministry of Magic to think about too. Bravery is certainly a must for this story. 


## Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: for the mystery-loving creatives
When you’re cooking, do you always follow the recipe to the letter? Or do you like to add your own flourish and flair? If you found instructions for a twist on a classic chocolate cake, would you go for it? If you’re thinking, of course! Then this book might just be the one for you. The Half-Blood Prince guided Harry through many a Potions class and he wasn’t afraid to stray from the original Potions recipes and try something new. The Half-Blood Prince made up spells too, so you’d need to be brave (and possibly a bit reckless) to try those out too. Does that sound like you? Half-Blood Prince is one for the free-thinking creatives, but you’d also need to like solving mysteries. The mystery of what Draco is doing would need to occupy hours of your thoughts, as well as those Horcrux-related lessons with Dumbledore. And when it came down to it, would you have the confidence to go with the headmaster to hunt a Horcrux, or would you rather stay in your common room? If you’re with Dumbledore, then this book is for you. 
 
## Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: for the selfless warriors
It can’t be denied that Harry, Ron and Hermione were pretty selfless in the seventh book. Leaving the hallowed halls of Hogwarts behind, they embarked on a task set for them by Dumbledore that seemed – at times – both thankless and impossible. You’d need determination to thrive in this book, a strong sense of right and wrong, a pretty thick skin – remember all that freezing cold camping they did? – and also a sense that the world is bigger than you as an individual. This story would definitely suit you if you’re a team player and want to do what’s right, no matter how difficult. You should also be the kind of person who isn’t afraid to confront their fears – destroying Horcruxes isn’t all about being able to wield the sword of Gryffindor or a Basilisk fang, it’s about showing inner strength. If you’ve got that – then Deathly Hallows could be the book for you.
