## New ride “Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry”, is all about the dreaded Dolores Umbridge

Perhaps more fearful than Lord Voldemort himself, [the wizarding world’s other great villain](https://www.harrypotter.com/features/exploring-the-villains-and-less-obvious-villains-of-the-wizarding-world) – Dolores Umbridge – is back with a vengeance in this new ride, __Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry__. This new, fully immersive dark ride takes place just after the Battle of Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where the devious former-Hogwarts Professor has been put on trial. Alas, things don’t go accordingly to plan, and Umbridge escapes the court alongside a gaggle of remaining Death Eaters.   

Your job will be to re-capture Umbridge alongside a few familiar friends (Harry, Ron and Hermione, no less!) and a lovely house-elf called Higgledy.

## Watch out for Easter eggs!

It's a Hogwarts bonanza today, as we are delighted to reveal six of the school’s staff that will appear in the Harry Potter HBO Original Series.

John Lithgow is confirmed as Albus Dumbledore, the Headmaster of Hogwarts and Harry’s future mentor. Lithgow is a 6-time Emmy winner, 2-time Tony winner and a BAFTA and Oscar nominee. Most recently, he won the 2025 Best Actor Oliver Award for his role in the West End theatre production, *Giant*. 

Tony, Golden Globe and Olivier winner and Oscar and Emmy nominee Janet McTeer will portray Hogwarts Deputy Headmistress and Head of Gryffindor House, Professor McGonagall. 

Paapa Essiedu who was Emmy and BAFTA nominated for his turn in comedy-drama *I May Destroy You*, takes on the surly Potions Professor, Severus Snape, while BIFA nominated actor Nick Frost will be taking on the mantle of beloved Hogwarts gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid. 

Theatre performer Luke Thallon is playing Quirinus Quirrell, the Defence Against the Dark Arts professor in Harry’s first year, while five-time BAFTA winner Paul Whitehouse, perhaps best known for UK sketch series *The Fast Show*, plays Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch.

That’s a very full Hogwarts staff room already! 

‘We are happy to announce the casting of John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu, Nick Frost, Luke Thallon and Paul Whitehouse to play Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape, Hagrid, Quirrell and Filch,’ said Francesca Gardiner, showrunner and executive producer and Mark Mylod, director of multiple episodes and executive producer. ‘We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life.’

Ahead of public opening on 16th June, the wizarding shopping street of Diagon Alley was revealed today at Warner. Bros. Studio Tour Tokyo – The Making of Harry Potter.

Diagon Alley was initially created for *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*, then repeatedly adapted for subsequent films. Walls shifted, shop fronts were moved, and entire buildings had been carefully tweaked, angled ever-so-slightly to the left of right. During the filming of *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, many of the Diagon Alley set pieces were also re-dressed for use in the snowy village of Hogsmeade.

In the three-storey explosion of orange and purple at the end of Diagon Alley, the Weasley twins sold everything from Extendable Ears to Love Potion in their store, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes. Designed to look like an 18th century storefront, the shop took over three months to build during filming — and most of this time was spent constructing the 20- foot, moving mannequin above the main entrance. Fred and George’s mischievous sense of humour is reflected in 120 individually designed products, created by graphic design team, MinaLima.

Head Prop Maker, Pierre Bohanna, remembers the set as one of his favourites to create: “Diagon Alley was really a showcase of prop-making, it was a joy to work on and see it come to life”. The set required thousands of props to be created and items to be sourced to fill the shops, everything from cauldrons, quills and robes to the Nimbus 2000 broomstick on display in the window of Quality Quidditch Supplies.

Spanning over 900 square metres with 35ft tall walls, the Ministry of Magic was one of the biggest sets created for the Harry Potter films, requiring months to build and hundreds of extras to fill the space. For Studio Tour Tokyo's grand opening, this set has been lovingly re-built in Japan for visitors to come and see.

To commute to the Ministry of Magic, staff would travel in via telephone, lavatory, or the [Floo Network](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/floo-powder) using one of the enormous fireplaces, each standing at over nine feet tall. Visitors to the Studio Tour are invited to step into one of these fireplaces, just like a Ministry of Magic employee, and pose for photos and videos as smoke and lighting effects mimic the magical effect of Floo powder all around them. 

The design of the Ministry was inspired by Victorian architecture and is covered with thousands of green and red tiles made of lacquered wood. During filming, the set was one of the most time-consuming and intricate to create, the number of hours needed to build a set the size and complexity of the London Ministry of Magic would take a single person over twenty years working non-stop to complete.

Fans will step into the set dressed for its appearance in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part One* when Harry, Ron and Hermione take on the identities of Ministry workers in order to break in. The set is complete with the terrifying ‘Magic is Might’ statue, that was installed after the Death Eaters take over the Ministry of Magic and exemplifies their cruel view of Muggles.

Brendan Casey, Associate Animator, Kevin Chesnos, Lead Cinematic Animator, Moira Rausch, Mo-Cap Technician, and Matt Dibb, Senior Animator, got together to pick out some of the weirdest and most wonderful moments they had while creating Hogwarts Legacy, using a variety of state-of-the-art techniques.

In the video, you’ll learn how certain magical creatures came to life (how do you create a reference point for… a dragon?!) and discover how the team visualised the reactions of characters during their adventures.

The experts had to ask themselves many an odd question (“how much does a troll weigh?”) in order to fully realise certain elements of the wizarding world, and used real-world references to transform Hogwarts Legacy into a truly authentic experience.

## Introducing: Cursed Child Way! 

A mayoral proclamation has decreed that The Lyric Theatre’s home, 214 West 43rd Street, is now officially called “Cursed Child Way” to commemorate this special anniversary. Introduced by producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, Commissioner of New York City’s Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment, Anne del Castillo, arrived on stage to present the cast with this special accolade. “You’ve brought magic back to Broadway,” she said. Aww!

## The Cursed Child cast went sky-high 

When it comes to magic, the sky is the limit – and the Broadway cast took that sentiment quite literally last week. As part of the five-year anniversary, the Cursed Child performers could be found on the highest outdoor sky deck of the Western hemisphere, simply named “Edge” at 30 Hudson Yards, performing the iconic wand dance from the play. Well, if we were in the *Cursed Child*, we’d be shouting this fact from the rooftops too! 

## Fans had the chance to enter a special lottery

New York-based fans got the chance to run down to the Lyric Theatre and try out for $5 tickets for the show, alongside other magical prize giveaways. From Hogwarts notebooks, Funko Pop collectibles and even a chance to grab an amazing gaming bundle: Hogwarts Legacy and a PS5 - we are definitely not jealous of the winners.

On Sunday, fans of the show were treated to an extra-special guest at the Lyric Theatre: Oliver Phelps! AKA our lovely George Weasley from the Harry Potter films. It was particularly nice seeing Oliver meet the "19 years later" versions of his fictional siblings Ron and Ginny.

Today it was revealed at Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max Streaming Press Event that the Harry Potter books are to be adapted into a new TV series! Yes, really!

The news comes in tandem with the announcement that US streaming giant [HBO Max will soon become Max](https://www.wizardingworld.com/news/introducing-enhanced-streaming-service-max) – and the new Harry Potter television series will be a Max Original when it launches in the US. Of course, wherever you are in the world, you’ll find out soon enough how you can watch the series in your territory too.

The new adaptation will introduce you to a new cast for a new generation of fandom, and will be full of the fantastic detail, much-loved  characters and dramatic locations we have loved for over 25 years. Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and his incredible adventures to new audiences around the world.

The Harry Potter books were first adapted for the screen back in 2001, paving the path for what would become a beloved 8-film series that we still celebrate today. They will always be at the heart of the magic, but we are excited to hear we will have the opportunity to relive these stories in exciting new ways.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max Content described Harry Potter as a ‘cultural phenomenon’.

“We are delighted to give audiences the opportunity to discover Hogwarts in a whole new way,” he said. “Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon and it is clear there is such an enduring love and thirst for the Wizarding World. In partnership with Warner Bros. Television and J.K. Rowling, this new Max Original series will dive deep into each of the iconic books that fans have continued to enjoy for all of these years.”

J. K. Rowling, who will serve as an Executive Producer said of the news: “Max’s commitment to preserving the integrity of my books is important to me, and I'm looking forward to being part of this new adaptation which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long form television series.”
