## McGonagall was once engaged to a Muggle
Their engagement may have only lasted a day but it’s true! [Minerva McGonagall](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall) was once engaged to the dashing son-of-a-local-farmer, Dougal McGregor.  A [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) (who was quite unaware of Minerva’s magical ability) became the person she laughed with, argued with and fell head-over-heels in love with. Caught up in a whirlwind romance, Dougal proposed to Minerva, and she accepted. 

Yet, she couldn’t bring herself to tell her parents. She had seen how the trust between her parents had broken in the aftermath of her witch mother revealing her magical identity to her Muggle father. She knew she would have to live a life of secrecy. And she realised it meant the end of any of her ambitions or dreams. Faced with an unbearable choice, Minerva chose herself and a life in which she was free to be exactly who she wanted. She broke Dougal’s heart when she told him, as the Statute of Secrecy prevented her from telling him the real reason she could not marry him, and her heart shattered too.

## Quidditch was a talent of hers
Professor McGonagall might be known for her tremendous Transfiguration skills (she did win the *Transfiguration Toda*y Most Promising Newcomer award whilst at school), but she had another passion in life, for one particular sport… [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch). Minerva McGonagall was a gifted player (like her mother before her) and member of the Gryffindor Quidditch team. However, all that talent did not stop her from having a particularly nasty fall during a match in her final year. Thanks to a Slytherin foul, she was left with a concussion, broken ribs and a life-long desire to see the Slytherin Quidditch team crushed in every single one of their matches.

## She worked at the Ministry of Magic
She might have seemed like part of the Hogwarts furniture, but McGonagall had a totally different job before her illustrious career as a Hogwarts professor and eventual headmistress. After she left school, Minerva worked at The Department of Magical Law Enforcement in the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic). Naturally, a witch as skilled as Minerva was a talented and efficient employee – but she was unhappy. The lingering heartbreak from her failed engagement to Dougal McGregor, the common anti-Muggle sentiment (which she found particularly difficult as she adored her Muggle father), and homesickness for Scotland meant she stayed for only two years. Ever determined, Minerva wrote a letter to [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) asking if she could return to Hogwarts as a professor… and we all know how that ended up.

## Professor Sprout was an old schoolfriend 
This is such a cute fact about Minerva – we love learning more about who the professors consider to be their besties. [Pomona Sprout](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/pomona-sprout) and Minerva McGonagall might have been in different years and different houses, but despite their school careers only overlapping by two years, the two witches enjoyed a brilliant friendship both then and when they both ended up back at [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) as teachers.

## Her husband was killed in a Venomous Tentacula incident 
After the heartbreak she suffered with Dougal McGregor, it warmed our hearts to see that Minerva found love again – with her Ministry boss no less! Having never lost touch after Minerva left her job in London, Elphinstone Urquart and Minerva eventually found their way to one another (though Elphinstone proposed *multiple* times before McGonagall would accept). 

The pair lived happily together in a cottage in Hogsmeade, quite content in each other’s company. However, their little idyll was shattered only three years after saying ‘I do’ when Elphinstone was accidentally killed by a [Venomous Tentacula](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/venomous-tentacula) bite. This was the moment Minerva returned to Hogwarts for good. Unable to bear the thought of remaining in the cottage alone, Minerva packed up her things and moved back to the concealed bedroom hidden in the wall of her study at Hogwarts.

## McGonagall was a Hatstall 
As the *Head* of Gryffindor house, this one might come as a bit of a shock. Yep, the [Sorting Hat](/fact-file/objects/the-sorting-hat) nearly didn’t place McGonagall in the house of courage and chivalry but thought the house of wit and wisdom, Ravenclaw, might have been where she belonged instead. The Hat was so torn, it took over five minutes to make its decision – thus making Minerva a Hatstall. Interestingly, the Hat faced a similar struggle when it came to Sorting a young Filius Flitwick, and the two liked to joke about what would have happened if they had swapped places.

## The hidden biscuit tin
The Professor McGonagall we met was a no-nonsense witch who didn’t suffer fools gladly. You can imagine our surprise when we discovered the secret tartan biscuit tin hidden in her study. The moment she uttered the words ‘Have a biscuit, Potter’ rather than reprimanding Harry when he stood before her, altered our view of this strict-but-fair witch, giving us a glimpse of the other, softer and most definitely secret side of Minerva McGonagall. Incidentally, all rooms should have a secret biscuit tin.

## When Harry met the Dursleys

[Professor McGonagall](/features/minerva-mcgonagall "Minerva McGonagall") had been sat for hours stiffly on the brick wall when [Dumbledore](/features/albus-dumbledore "Albus Dumbledore") (and his sherbet lemons) arrived, followed shortly by a downcast Hagrid. In that moment when the three left Harry on the steps of [number four, Privet Drive](/features/number-four-privet-drive "Number Four, Privet Drive"), we caught a glimpse of McGonagall’s soft heart:

## When she called Lockhart’s bluff

[Lockhart](/features/gilderoy-lockhart "Gilderoy Lockhart") has to be one of the funniest and most arrogant wizards in Harry Potter. When the moment came for him to prove his worth, McGonagall seized it with glee.

## When she was knocked out by Stunners

She stepped in to protect Hagrid from Umbridge, and was hit with four Stunners. Her collapse and the horror of the students are etched forever in memory. Not a great moment for McGonagall, but an important one all the same.

## Never suffer fools gladly 

Minerva McGonagall wasn’t born yesterday! She’ll not be hoodwinked by some swaggering imbecile in a fancy cloak… and yes, we’re talking about Gilderoy Lockhart:

McGonagall might not have been a fan of Trelawney’s teaching, but she was the first to comfort her when she lost her job:

## Dance like nobody’s watching (apart from the entire school)

When McGonagall says you’ll dance, you’ll dance – end of discussion! This gave us one of the most charming scenes in the film adaptation of *Goblet of Fire* (2005) as she helped the Gryffindor students learn their first steps for the Yule Ball.

It was very tough to sift through the impossibly tall and swaying stack of rousing moments Professor McGonagall gave us during Harry’s Hogwarts years. After all, the steely Head of Gryffindor house had always been a winning combination of no-nonsense and compassion: she was a character carefully crafted with light and shade all wrapped up in a neat, tight bun. 

We’ve always enjoyed the subtle wink of Professor McGonagall, that wink that told us she wasn’t all strict – and despite her resolute veneer, she was actually one of the most supportive and considerate teachers in Hogwarts. When Neville Longbottom was dismayed with his O.W.L. results, McGonagall, in her very matter-of-fact way, supported him. When Harry Potter yelled at Professor Umbridge vowing Lord Voldemort had returned, McGonagall reacted to a student waging war with a fellow teacher by offering him a biscuit. 

We must also commend McGonagall for being the rock that Professor Dumbledore needed. On the terrible night of Lily and James Potter’s deaths, for example, it was she who was by his side to deliver a baby Harry on to his new life.

Eventually, we landed on the penultimate chapter of tension in *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, right before the Battle of Hogwarts, where McGonagall shone brighter than ever. 

## ‘The Sacking of Severus Snape’ 

After a broken year at Hogwarts, with Severus Snape appointed headmaster, and the awful Alecto and Amycus Carrow replacing Professor McGonagall as deputy headmasters (don’t even get us started on this…), the Head of Gryffindor house was somehow still a tower of strength when we bumped into her again, on the cusp of a great battle.

It’s not actually the Battle of Hogwarts itself for which we choose to commend McGonagall, but those stolen minutes before Voldemort stormed the castle, when Harry returned and the revolt began. Before all of that got going, McGonagall had some staff restructuring to do.

## A natural leader 

As you know, for the majority of the books Professor McGonagall gracefully played second fiddle to Albus Dumbledore’s headmaster. After his death at the hands of her own colleague Snape (for reasons she didn’t realise at the time), we can’t even fathom how horrendous Hogwarts must have been during Harry’s would-have-been final year, especially having to work under the man who killed her good friend.

In the wake of Voldemort’s ascent, Hogwarts became a shadow of its former self, with the Dark wizard having more control over the wizarding world. This particularly came into play when we saw that the Carrow siblings were now employed at the school, a pair of Death Eaters whose teaching methods included encouraging Unforgiveable Curses and using Muggle Studies as a platform to try to teach students that those without magic were inferior.

After a year of hell, Harry returned to Hogwarts to hunt down a Horcrux in Ravenclaw Tower, inevitably leading Voldemort towards the castle. He quickly found McGonagall in a deeply unpleasant altercation with Amycus Carrow, whose sister Alecto had just summoned the Dark Mark. We saw McGonagall use only words against Amycus, as the abhorrent Death Eater worried about not being able to find Harry, and suggested blaming Hogwarts students for triggering Alecto’s Dark Mark accidentally. However, Professor McGonagall wasn’t having any of it.

> ‘Only the difference between truth and lies, courage and cowardice,’ said Professor McGonagall, who had turned pale, ‘a difference, in short, which you and your sister seem unable to appreciate. But let me make one thing very clear. You are not going to pass off your many ineptitudes on the students of Hogwarts. I shall not permit it.’

There must have been many final straws for the always astute Minerva during this year, but she somehow managed to keep her cool in the face of such horrors, even when Amycus spat in her face. A far more emotionally lax Harry (hidden under his Invisibility Cloak) couldn’t take this, though, and instantly cursed Alecto. Unsurprisingly, McGonagall didn’t seem phased, and even scolded Harry for putting himself in danger. Even in the path of such cruel mistreatment, McGonagall was still intent on protecting those around her.

However, Harry’s return seemed to ignite a fire in McGonagall, who quickly went to find her abhorred boss Snape to curtly inform him of events.

Before long, a frankly awesome duel ensued between McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout and Snape, the three fellow professors chipping in to end Snape’s reign once and for all. Seeing our Hogwarts favourites all band together in such a riveting way really set the tone for the chapter to come: ‘The Battle of Hogwarts’.

We can’t decide what we love more: the steely way McGonagall approached Snape’s office, the ‘knowing look’ between her and Sprout (go Pomona!), McGonagall screaming at Snape that he was a ‘coward’ or this beautiful one-liner when Snape fled the castle:

> ‘Our Headmaster is taking a short break,’ said Professor McGonagall, pointing at the Snape-shaped hole in the window. 

## Why it matters 

Had McGonagall ever been as classy and McGonagall-ish as she was in this chapter? It’s all about the words she used. From the way she steadily took down the Carrows to the way she confronted Snape, it was served ice cold, and gave McGonagall some much-needed catharsis without resorting to (too much) violence. Her stoic patience forged a careful defence strategy for Hogwarts, and she calmly worked with Harry to help him rather than bombard her absent student with questions.

In the next chapter, ‘The Battle of Hogwarts’ itself, we saw McGonagall put a plan in action, as she took back her rightful place as head of the school. Not only did she help coordinate the students leaving the castle, but also supported those who wanted to stay and fight.

However protective McGonagall may have been, she always had the faith in the students to push them harder where other teachers may not.

After all, when a young, first-year Harry Potter was set loose on his broom during a flying lesson, she recognised his potential to be on her house’s Quidditch team, rather than tipping all the house points out of the Gryffindor hourglass. Sure, Professor McGonagall wouldn’t let you get away with murder, but she would always have that special solidarity with her students, and a burning loyalty to whomever may need it. 

Seeing McGonagall’s unyielding attitude during Hogwarts’ darkest year is pretty inspirational to anyone who feels lost in times of evil. And her response to the Carrows, using graceful intellect, is a lesson to us all on how to react to anyone who deals in the currency of hate. 

Thank you, Professor McGonagall. And yes, we would like a biscuit.

In *Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban*, [Remus Lupin](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/ten-times-remus-lupin-made-us-wish-he-was-our-teacher) shared that it took his fellow Marauders – James, Sirius and Peter – until their fifth year at Hogwarts to finally become Animagi and keep him company in his werewolf form. But how did they manage it? And why did it take them so long to learn how to transform into animals?

Here’s a witch or wizard’s step-by-step guide to Animagus transformation, but we’re warning you – it makes for some grizzly reading.

## Step 1: Do your homework…

…in Transfiguration and [Potions](https://www.wizardingworld.com/features/ranked-the-best-and-worst-potions) at least. Becoming an Animagus requires a witch or wizard to be skilled in both these areas in order to stand a chance of achieving such a complex transformation.

## Step 2: Carry a single Mandrake leaf in your mouth…

…for an entire month – from full moon to full moon to be precise. Yes, we’re serious. If you swallow the leaf or remove it from your mouth at any point, you have to start the whole thing again (no-one likes to see that happen). You then have to find a ‘small crystal phial that receives the pure rays of the moon’, put your saliva-filled leaf inside, and add one of your own hairs.

## Step 3: Add a silver teaspoon of dew from a place that neither sunlight nor human feet have touched…

…for a full seven days. And if that wasn’t hard enough, you then have to add the chrysalis of a Death’s-head Hawk Moth to the crystal phial as well. Then put ‘this mixture in a quiet, dark place’ and leave it alone until the next electrical storm. And really leave it alone – don’t even look at it. Don’t even think about looking at it.

## Step 4: While waiting for the transfiguration to begin, you must place your wand tip over your heart…

…every sunrise and sundown and speak the following incantation: ‘Amato Animo Animato Animagus’. If you keep repeating your incantation, ‘there will come a time when, with the touch of the wand-tip to the chest, a second heartbeat may be sensed.’ Don’t change anything! Keep going. Keep waiting for that storm!

## Step 5: As soon as lightning appears in the sky, go to the place where…

…you’ve hidden your crystal phial. At last! If you’ve done everything right then you will ‘discover a mouthful of blood-red potion inside it.’ Then move somewhere where you aren’t going to alarm anyone or place yourself in physical danger during your transformation. An Animagus transformation party is definitely a bad idea.

## Step 6: Place your wand-tip against your heart and speak…

…the incantation ‘Amato Animo Animato Animagus’ and drink the potion. You will then feel fiery pain – lucky you – and an intense double heartbeat.

## Step 7: The shape of the creature into which you will shortly transform will appear…

…in your mind. The instructions then warn: ‘You must show no fear/ It is too late now, to escape the change you have willed’. Yikes!

## Step 8: When your transformation is complete you are strongly advised to pick up your wand…

…and hide it somewhere safe, so you can find it post-transformation. To return to human form, visualise your human self as clearly as you can. Don’t worry if you don’t change back immediately, ‘with practice, you will be able to slip in and out of your animal form at will, simply by visualising the creature’. ## The (many) things to be wary of…

- When the process of becoming an Animagus goes wrong, it often goes seriously wrong. We’re talking horrible half-human, half-animal mutations here, with no known cure.

- The first transformation is usually ‘uncomfortable and frightening. [Clothing](https://www.wizardingworld.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/clothing) and items such as glasses or jewellery meld to the skin and become one with fur, scales or spikes.’

- When you first transform, try to avoid panicking otherwise the animal mind ‘may gain the ascendancy’ and you could do something stupid or dangerous.

- ‘Generally, wizards prefer to have their clothes [Transfigure](https://www.wizardingworld.com/quiz/the-tricky-transfiguration-quiz) with them, to escape the embarrassment of reappearing naked’.

- Don’t forget to log your personal details and Animagus appearance on the Animagus Registry. Failure to do this might land you in Azkaban prison.

## She certainly knew how to put someone in their place – no matter how good-looking or golden-haired they were.

After Gilderoy Lockhart repeatedly boasted of knowing where the Chamber of Secrets was, and how to defeat the monster that was hiding inside, Professor McGonagall finally had enough. 

> ‘We’ll leave it to you, then, Gilderoy,’ said Professor McGonagall. ‘Tonight will be an excellent time to do it. We’ll make sure everyone’s out of your way. You’ll be able to tackle the monster all by yourself. A free rein at last.’

## Her tongue was as sharp as her mind

It seemed that Professor McGonagall didn’t have much faith in Divination as a magical practice, and she had even less faith in Professor Trelawney’s yearly predictions of death at the school.

If she’d attended a Muggle school, she would have dominated the debating team. You just know it.

A sharp tongue, a severe bun and narrowed eyes through glinting spectacles. Professor McGonagall was a no-nonsense woman who didn’t suffer fools at all, let alone gladly. However, her stern nature actually hid a warm personality, not to mention fierce protectiveness. As we learnt, she truly cared for the kids at Hogwarts – even if at times you might not have seen it. 

## When she couldn’t stand the idea of leaving baby Harry on a doorstep

Professor McGonagall didn’t often let her emotions show, especially in professional contexts with her colleagues. But when it came to a certain moment at Privet Drive, McGonagall got misty eyed, and understandably so.

## When Harry and Ron told Professor McGonagall they wanted to visit Hermione in the hospital wing (even though they were lying) 

Aside from the fact that Harry and Ron were manipulating Professor McGonagall’s little-seen emotions to get their own way, this scene was very touching. Harry and Ron probably weren’t expecting their plan to work so well.

## When McGonagall supported Harry instead of Professor Umbridge

Well, obviously she supported Harry over Umbridge. But for a woman who took her job – not to mention rules – very seriously, this was a big step.

## When McGonagall believed in her students. All of her students

At the core of her personality – before being a member of the Order of the Phoenix, or being a total bad-ass – McGonagall was a teacher. She was there to nurture and grow talent in her students. And that involved believing in them – which she did unfailingly. Just ignore the brisk tone in her voice. 

> ‘You cannot pass an O.W.L.,’ said Professor McGonagall grimly, ‘without serious application, practice and study. I see no reason why everybody in this class should not achieve an O.W.L. in Transfiguration as long as they put in the work.’ Neville made a sad little disbelieving noise. ‘Yes, you too, Longbottom,’ said Professor McGonagall. ‘There’s nothing wrong with your work except lack of confidence.’
