## Before the chapter

He may be the titular hero of the stories, but we all know that [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) couldn’t have made it through all the trials and tribulations of the wizarding world without his two best friends by his side. With their distinct personalities and strengths, Harry, [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) and [Hermione](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) were each brilliant characters in their own right… but together? Their friendship created its own kind of magic.

However, they weren’t instantly a solid team. Yes, Harry and Ron became friends from the minute they met but it wasn’t the same for Hermione. For quite a while she was an outsider. In fact, Harry and Ron were often at odds with the cleverest witch of her age – it all felt rather hostile. While Harry’s magical adventure had begun, he still hadn’t completely found his people.

All of this meant that when we were considering which chapter best illustrated when we fell in love with this little group, we couldn’t help but to be drawn to the moment everything changed for these three. The moment that, in our eyes, they became the golden trio.

## Hallowe’en

At the start of this chapter from the very first book, you would never believe that Harry, Ron and Hermione would ever get along. In the first few pages they bickered about *everything* from [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) being a reward for bad behaviour, to the pronunciation of [Wingardium Leviosa](/fact-file/spells/the-levitation-charm) and Ron even managed to make Hermione cry:

‘It’s no wonder no one can stand her,’ he said to Harry as they pushed their way into the crowded corridor. ‘She’s a nightmare, honestly.’ 

Someone knocked into Harry as they hurried past him. It was Hermione. Harry caught a glimpse of her face – and was startled to see that she was in tears. 

‘I think she heard you.’

‘So?’ said Ron, but he looked a bit uncomfortable. ‘She must’ve noticed she’s got no friends.’

However, by the end of these pages everything had changed. It was this chapter that proved to be a turning point in their relationship… and it was all thanks to this particular moment:

Harry was just helping himself to a jacket potato when Professor Quirrell came sprinting into the Hall, his turban askew and terror on his face. Everyone stared as he reached Professor Dumbledore’s chair, slumped against the table and gasped, ‘Troll – in the dungeons – thought you ought to know.’

He then sank to the floor in a dead faint.

The action-packed sequence full of bogies, Ron *finally* getting the Levitation Charm right and three Hogwarts students taking down a fully grown [mountain troll](/fact-file/creatures/troll) was the first time that we saw these characters work together to overcome a (literally) ginormous challenge.

*This* was the moment that they became the golden trio. The moment their lifelong bond of friendship sparked into existence. *This* was the moment they became an unbreakable team.

‘But from that moment on, Hermione Granger became their friend. There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.’

## Why it matters

The trio arguably had bigger moments over the course of the series – such as saving the wizarding world from the tyranny of [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort). Honestly? There were so many moments we could have chosen – in *Philosopher’s Stone* alone! However, it was reading about how the most important friendship of the series came together that truly struck a chord with us.

You see, it is friendship, combined with love, that makes up one of the key themes of the Harry Potter stories. Without either, how can good prevail in a world where darkness looms? This chapter zeroed in on that. You need to remember that these weren’t grown adults tackling a dangerous creature – these were children. They had to work together and trust one another to overcome this challenge, they certainly couldn’t have done it alone.

It was also the chapter that showed each of them stepping up in their own way thanks to the support of the others. It was Harry that bravely said they needed to go after Hermione. It was Ron who mastered the spell that had previously eluded him in a time of crisis. It was the moment Hermione chose to break the rules and covered for her new friends. From prickly beginnings to a unified end, it was this chapter that showed just how multifaceted these characters were, and how they encouraged each other to grow.

Finally, it also highlighted the importance of second chances and not judging a book by its cover. If Harry or Ron had refused to see Hermione as anything other than an annoying know-it-all or she had refused to budge on her view of the pair being exasperating troublemakers – who knows what that could have meant for their future? Without these three becoming friends, we’re not convinced that Voldemort could have been defeated at all.

‘…we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided.’

That’s certainly the case when it comes to our golden trio. This was the chapter that changed everything and the chapter that proved that they’re always better when they’re together.

## Harry’s eye-colour is different to the books

One of [Harry’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) most distinguishing features are the green eyes he inherited from his mother, [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter). However, Daniel Radcliffe’s eyes are bright blue. Easily fixed with a pair of green colour contact lenses, right? Unfortunately not. On his very first day of filming, when they were shooting Harry leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) and saying goodbye to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid), Daniel wore the contact lenses and ended up with streaming bloodshot eyes. While Harry having watery eyes was great for this moving moment, it wasn’t so brilliant for Daniel. It turns out he was having a severe reaction to the lenses. The team tried to digitally alter his eye colour instead – but it just looked fake. From that moment on, the film version of Harry had blue eyes.

## Harry’s glasses and the mysterious spots

The green contact lenses weren’t the only eyewear that caused Daniel Radcliffe problems on set. According to Daniel, during the first couple of weeks of filming he started getting ‘terrible spots’. It was his Dad, Alan Radcliffe, who noticed what might be causing them when he saw that they seemed to follow a particular pattern. The spots had formed neat circles around Daniel’s eyes – exactly where his glasses would be. It transpired that Daniel had a nickel allergy, and it was Harry’s iconic glasses that were causing this particular skin issue.

## There were some unfortunate practical effects for Fluffy

You’d be forgiven for thinking that [Fluffy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fluffy-fact-file) the three-headed dog was completely created using CGI. While they were for the most part, there were also some fun practical effects that went into Fluffy’s creation. One of these practical features were the giant paws that were built for the actors to use in close-up shots. However, not all the practical effects were so pleasant. Fluffy’s drool was not CGI. It was very real and very gross – and we’d have the same reaction as [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) if we ended up with it dribbling down our shoulder.

## Warwick Davis played multiple characters

Warwick Davis did not just play the role of [Professor Flitwick](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/filius-flitwick) in *Philosopher’s Stone*. If you’re eagle-eyed and sharp-eared you can see him pop up in multiple places. In the first film, he was the bank teller at [Gringotts](/fact-file/locations/gringotts) who asked Harry and Hagrid for the key to the [Potters'](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-potters) vault. He was also the voice (but not body) of the goblin [Griphook](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/griphook-fact-file). However, as a lot of you have probably spotted, he did go on to embody the whole role of Griphook in the final two films.

## Did you spot Hermione’s dentures?

One memorable character trait of [Hermione Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) (along with her bushy hair) was her buck teeth. As the production team on the first film were trying to stick as closely as they could to the books, this included Hermione’s teeth. To emulate this a pair of prosthetic teeth were made for Emma Watson. But according to the film’s director Chris Columbus ‘They looked a little silly and they affected her speech’. That didn’t stop them the team from giving them a whirl on the first day of shooting. If you look closely at the final scene of *Philosopher’s Stone*, you will see Emma Watson in a pair of oversized dentures. It’s safe to say they were quickly abandoned!

## Harry’s first Weasley jumper looked a little different

Harry doesn't expect to get any presents on his first Christmas morning at Hogwarts... but he does! One of his gifts is a famous Weasley jumper! However, did you notice that the film version was different to the book description? In the book, his glorious knitwear is described as emerald green and has no letter on the front. In the film, his first Weasley jumper is blue with a large letter ‘H’. Either way, both are brilliant – we certainly wish we had our very own woollen [Mrs Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley) creation.

## James and Oliver Phelps aren’t natural redheads

Did you know that not all the actors who played members of this flame-haired family were natural redheads? This was the case for James and Oliver Phelps, who had to dye their brown hair ginger to become [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) and [George](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley). Though their newly dyed hair did help them to convince their mates that they had been cast as the popular Weasley twins. Oliver has even said that nobody at their school believed them when they initially revealed they were going to appear in *Philosopher’s Stone*. It was only after they turned up one day with bright red barnets that their peers started to think they were being serious.

## Emma Watson didn’t just learn Hermione’s lines

It turns out that Emma Watson shared quite a few similarities with her character Hermione – including going above and beyond when it came to homework. During the first film, not only did she learn her lines, but she also learnt those of the other cast members. Chris Columbus would often have to call cut because Emma would be mouthing the lines of Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint without realising!

## Devil’s Snare and the puppeteers

When discussing how to portray the deadly [Devil’s Snare](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/devils-snare) on the big screen, filmmakers soon realised that creating it using CGI would be too expensive. Instead, they had to think of a practical way to bring it to life using a combination of puppeteers and camera trickery. Giant tentacles were wrapped around the actors and the hidden puppeteers would make them move and slither off the trio. Then, to make the tentacles appear as though they were enveloping rather than releasing the characters, the film was played backwards.

## Richard Harris’s granddaughter convinced him to be Albus Dumbledore

Did you know that Richard Harris almost said no to taking on the role of [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore)? It was his granddaughter, Ellie, that stopped him. In an interview, he said that Ellie had called him and said ‘Papa, if you don’t play Dumbledore, I will never speak to you again!’. With such strong views he felt he had no choice and came on board. We know we’re very grateful that she gave him the push he needed!

Christmas is just around the corner, and we are feeling festive over at Harry Potter HQ! While we know that none of the characters are actually Father Christmas, we’ve had a lot of fun thinking about who might share his energy. Do you agree with our choices? 

## Is Albus Dumbledore’s beard a clue?

Beloved by many and with a beard like freshly fallen snow – are we talking about [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) or Father Christmas? Who knows! It could be either! Both have jobs that focus on looking out for a large number of children. They each have an air of mystery – did we really know where Dumbledore went on his mysterious trips away from [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts)? And we really can’t stress this one enough… just look at their beards! Identical!

In our hunt for Father Christmas, the wise Hogwarts headmaster is a strong contender. However, that’s not to say we don’t have any doubts. Even though he is excellent at keeping secrets, as one of the most recognisable wizards in the entire world, we think it would be hard to keep a double life under wraps. Also, between fighting Dark magic, running a school and eating sherbet lemons – where would he find the time?

## Could grumpy Aberforth Dumbledore be jolly St. Nick?

We don’t just have one Dumbledore on our Christmas radar, we have two! As the brother who had an equally excellent beard but kept a lower profile, it would be foolish not consider [Aberforth](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file). Yes, he was grumpy. Yes, he was a trifle *odd*. Nevertheless, beneath that gruff surface lay a heart of gold. Aberforth truly cared about the students at Hogwarts and helped when it mattered most.

One slight problem, Father Christmas flies around on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. If Aberforth was handing out presents, we all know he would choose to be pulled along by his favourite animals… goats. Perhaps he’s not our hidden holiday hero.

## Hagrid’s care for magical creatures makes a compelling case

Father Christmas must be someone who has an affinity with animals. Between checking that all carrots are evenly distributed, finding time to help build the confidence of the only reindeer with a red nose *and* making sure every present around the world is delivered, it would be chaos if they weren’t. It also sounds like a perfect job for [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid).

Hagrid instantly being best friends with his flying crew is not our only reason. Caring, jolly and thoughtful, his entire personality gives off Father Christmas vibes.

There is just *one* detail that throws everything into doubt… his beard. It might be bushy but it’s the wrong colour and that has us questioning everything.

## Does Arthur Weasley have a festive secret?

With his ability to find magic in the mundane, [Arthur Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/arthur-weasley) might not have had a beard, but he did have Father Christmas energy. With seven of his own – and a few honorary extras too – there’s no doubt he adored children.

Then there’s his beloved shed. It might have been the bane of his [wife’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/molly-weasley) existence, but it was his haven. One where he liked to work on his secret projects… or could that be secret Christmas present projects? Have we discovered *the* toy making hub?

However, to be Father Christmas you have to be totally committed to your role as bringer-of-festive-joy. Arthur was committed to his job… but in the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office. It would be impossible to do both at once.

## Have you considered the gift-expert, Horace Slughorn?

We all know that a crucial part of Father Christmas’ job is making a list, then checking it twice, to try and find out who’s naughty or nice. You know who else like lists? [Slughorn](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/horace-slughorn). His [Slug Club](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-slug-club) was filled with all the people on his! Can this be a coincidence? Add to that his merry demeanour, and excellent taste when it came to cultivating presents, and we think we have a case.

Having said that, not only does Slughorn lack the Father Christmas beard but he also lacks his selfless nature. We’re not saying that he was a bad person, but he was snobby – and far more interested in getting presents than giving them.

## Hear us out… what about Vernon Dursley?

We promise we haven’t been [Confunded](/fact-file/spells/the-confundus-charm), we know that the mean-spirited [Vernon Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/vernon-dursley) seems nothing like jolly ol’ St. Nick… but could it all be the perfect cover? Nobody would ever believe it could be true – he was the director of a drill making firm! Extremely boring! Yet, what if Grunnings was actually a *toy* making firm… one where elves made presents for children? Food for thought.

Plus, thanks to his extremely well-maintained moustache, we know Vernon could grow a triumphant Father Christmas beard. His choice to forego the famous facial hair could be part of his plan to keep his identity hidden.

Yet, we highly doubt that someone as wonderful as Father Christmas would be able to maintain such a horrible façade. Vernon was rotten to the core. Officially, the [Yule Ball](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/yule-ball) wasn’t a [Triwizard Tournament](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/triwizard-tournament) task, but it was just as dramatic. Set against the spectacular backdrop of a wintry [Great Hall](/fact-file/locations/the-great-hall), with a swirling storm of teenage hormones, strong emotions and dancing, the stakes were just as high.

Friendships, love lives and even international relations were on the line and bold moves were made. Whether the characters made the right decisions? Now that’s the real question.

And who better to answer that question than you, the fans! We asked for your hot takes on this glamourous Christmas party and you did not disappoint. Here are just a few of our favourites…

## Was Ron actually a fashion icon?

With everyone donning their dress robes for what was possibly the glitziest event [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) had ever hosted, the Yule Ball was a mix of dazzling fashion wins and dismal fashion fails. [Ron’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) frothy concoction of maroon, lace and great-aunt Tessie smell is the latter… or so we thought. 

It turns out not all of you agree. __David Czarnik__ even claims: ‘*Ron was actually the best dressed at the ball* 👀’. 

You know what, there’s something to be said about how *unique* Ron’s outfit was. It was vintage! Vintage is cool! If he had just worn his robes with a bit more confidence… perhaps he could have pulled it off?

Although, many thought it would take more than an attitude change to make *that* outfit work. 

As __Nancy Gedenberg__ told us: ‘*I have always wondered why they didn't alter Ron's robe with a little magic*’. 

She raises an interesting point! In the *Goblet of Fire* book, Ron did use a [Severing Charm](/fact-file/spells/the-severing-charm) to try and tone down the frilliness. However, Ron is no [Madam Malkin](/fact-file/locations/madam-malkins-robes-for-all-occasions), and his alteration attempts just left him with some ‘depressingly frayed’ edges instead… we’re not sure which is worse.

## Ron’s robes showed that Harry was a bad friend…

That’s right, those who firmly agreed with [Ginny’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ginny-weasley) assessment that Ron’s robes were ‘ghastly’ were incredulous that [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) had let his friend wear them at all.

Like __Stephanie Marcum__, who had some strong feelings about it: *‘Harry did Ron dirty here. Harry is literally a millionaire. He could easily have bought new dress robes for Ron but instead chose to let him wear those and look like a dork’.*

On the surface, it does seem baffling that Harry didn’t just buy him some better robes. Ron’s were second-hand and out of fashion. However, we think it’s a bit more complicated than that.

Ron was a proud person, but he was also self-conscious about his [family’s](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) financial situation and struggled with feelings of being overshadowed. Harry was fully aware of this. He knew that Ron might have been insulted if he just bought him some brand-new robes as he would have found it condescending.

After all, Ron only accepted an expensive pair of [Omnioculars](/fact-file/objects/omnioculars) because Harry told him not to expect another Christmas present for at least a decade. If anything, Harry was being sensitive to Ron’s feelings – that makes him a good friend.

## Pink or blue? You had thoughts on Hermione’s outfit too

The other outfit that had everybody talking – but for all the right reasons – was [Hermione’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger). Or should we say *outfits*? Yes, the belle of the Yule Ball’s dress from the film did not match her dress from the book. It seems that some of you have some strong opinions about that…

Such as __Mary Main__ who was definitely team pink dress: *‘The costume department was right to put Hermione in a pink dress. If her dress was blue (like it was in the books), she would have blended in with the icy decorations and not stood out visually’.*

__Mary__ does make an excellent case and Hermione’s dress did add a pop of warmth to the wintry Great Hall – but we just can’t choose! Both gowns were stunning in their own way… we’re going to sit firmly on the fence for this one.

## The Patil twins should have had better dress robes

There was an overwhelming sense that the Patil twins were hard done by when it came to their Yule Ball experience – they deserved more.

__Jo Schendel__ wanted more for the twins’ Yule Ball look: *‘Padma and Parvati Patils' dresses in the movie were sooo plain. Saris are much more elaborate and pretty’.*

Honestly? We adored the gorgeous shades of pink and orange that [Parvati](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/parvati-patil) and [Padma](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/padma-patil-fact-file) wore in the films. Yet, we’d also love to see how their outfits could be taken to the next level with the help of a few magical details.

## And better dates

That wasn’t __Jo’s__ only frustration with the sisters’ experience. She also took umbrage with *‘their treatment at the hands of their "dates"’.*

Harry and Ron messed up here. They were too busy being stuck in their own heads to make the most of a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Even if there was no romantic spark with their dates, they still could have had a joy-filled evening as friends.

__Anthony Tom__ is one fan who agrees with this: *‘I think Harry should have just had a fun night with Parvati instead of being depressed that he couldn’t go with Cho’.*

Absolutely! With music, dancing and fantastic company, deciding to sulk the entire time is a baffling choice. It wasn’t Parvati or Padma’s fault that Harry and Ron’s romantic dreams had been dashed and honestly, they were both being rather immature about it all.

## Speaking of dates… you had thoughts about who Harry went with

__Andrew Llewellyn Collins__ told us: *‘Harry should have taken Ginny to the ball. It would have given Ron an actual reason to be angry towards him’.*

Well, we know __Andrew__ was firmly ‘Team Harry’ during his *Goblet of Fire* fight with Ron.

Anyway, with Harry and Ginny’s loving marriage and three kids, we agree with this Yule Ball pairing… but not with the reasoning! We found it far too stressful when Harry and Ron were at each other’s throats and would not like to have it happen again – thank-you-very-much.

## And Hermione

With Ron and Hermione’s jealousy-fuelled argument revealing hidden feelings, many saw the Yule Ball as a turning point in their relationship. This was the moment we released that they might be more than just friends.

__Dave Tullio__ had a different perspective though. He believed: *‘Hermione never lit up for Ron the way she did for Viktor Krum’.*

When you compare the difference between how Ron and [Krum](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/viktor-krum) handled the Yule Ball, we can see why he might think this. Viktor Krum took notice of Hermione. He danced with her and made her laugh. He didn’t make her feel like an afterthought. Whereas Ron overlooked Hermione until it was too late and then allowed his jealousy to cast a cloud over her brilliant evening.

Having said that, this was one, small, turbulent moment in Ron and Hermione’s story. There were far more that showed the love and loyalty they had for one another. We’re thrilled that Hermione had a wonderful time with Krum at the dance… but we’re more thrilled that it gave Harry’s best friends the nudge they needed to see each other in a whole new light.

## Some of you questioned whether there should have been dates at all!

We admit that having access to magic would make creating a wintry landscape indoors easier (we’re not expecting you to carpet your living room in fake snow), but with a few carefully chosen decorations, you can easily achieve the same vibe.
