## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Albus Dumbledore wouldn’t want you to know about his dangerous brush with power

## Minerva McGonagall kept her broken heart close to her chest
We’re sure the firm but fair professor would rather have kept the time that she was once engaged for a day to herself. After all, it doesn’t really match her plain-speaking persona. With so many wonderful personalities reflected in all these wands, we wanted to home in on the two most important elements – the core and wood – and explore ([with a helping hand from Ollivander](https://www.harrypotter.com/writing-by-jk-rowling/wand-woods)) what that might mean for you. With 114 possible wood and core combinations, some are more common than others. Out of them all, these were the 10 rarest – can you spot your wand on this list?

## 10th: Walnut & Phoenix

Kicking off our list, we have a wand which would suit someone of a highly intelligent nature. According the brilliant wandmaker, [Garrick Ollivander](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/garrick-ollivander), walnut wands are often drawn to the innovators and inventors. Coupled with a phoenix core which is known to show initiative (occasionally acting of its own accord) and capable of the greatest range of magic, together you’d make a perfect pair – full of curiosity and always on the brink of a great discovery.

Interestingly, two of the most famous phoenix core owners were a [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) and a Gryffindor – that is reflected here too. While it sits at number 10 overall, it doesn’t make either the Slytherin or Gryffindor top 10 as their 16th rarest. You will find the least of these wands in Hufflepuff, as the seventh rarest, and only a handful more in Ravenclaw at number nine.

## 9th: Red Oak & Unicorn
Wands made from red oak are suited to those who are quick on their feet with lightning reactions. In short, it is the perfect wand for duelling. With unicorn cores known to produce the most consistent magic, which is least subject to fluctuations and blockages, we imagine this rare combination would suit someone who would be described as both reliable and efficient. Someone who can make snap decisions under pressure and nearly always gets it right. 

While this wand is uncommon across all the houses, there is quite a stark difference between its popularity in [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff) compared to Slytherin. Despite being the ninth rarest overall, it doesn’t make the Hufflepuff top 10 – breaking into the top 20 at number 17. Whereas in Slytherin, it just misses the top spot in second place. It does make the top 10 for both Gryffindor and Ravenclaw in 10th and eighth position.

## 8th: Blackthorn & Unicorn
A rare wand for a rare personality. If this is yours, we imagine you are regarded as a pillar of strength – possibly even a great leader. An unusual wand wood, blackthorn wands have a reputation for suiting warriors best. They are powerful and loyal but need to go through danger or hardship with their owner to solidify their bond. With loyalty being a key trait of the unicorn core too, we imagine that you are someone who people often trust. You have had your fair share of challenges in life but have faced them head on and have not allowed it to shatter your faith in others.

The Slytherin ranking for this combination mirrors its overall position in eighth place. It is less common in Hufflepuff and [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) in sixth place. However, in 13th place, you will find a few more in Ravenclaw.

## 7th: Red Oak & Dragon
If this is your wand, then we think that you are an extrovert who wears their heart on their sleeve. Owners of red oak wands are often known for ability to produce distinctive spells – almost like their signature or trademark. Interestingly, dragon heartstring is the wand core capable of producing some of the most flamboyant spells. Together? This is not a wand for somebody who wishes to simply fade into the background. No, you are someone who stands out from the crowd and doesn’t shy away from the spotlight.

Interestingly while red oak wands are often drawn to those with a quick wit, out of the four houses, you’ll find the least in [Ravenclaw](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ravenclaw) where it’s their third rarest. It is only slightly more popular in Slytherin, taking fourth place. Gryffindor matches the overall ranking at number seven, and there are a few more in Hufflepuff as their ninth rarest.

## 6th: Red Oak & Phoenix
As the owner of this rare wand, we imagine you are known for your air of wildness. You are not someone who likes to be pinned down – living life in the fast lane and by your own rules. When you consider than red oak wands are often drawn to those who are adaptable and quick-thinking, and combine that with a phoenix core, which are notoriously hard to tame, then we think this wand would reflect your free-spirited nature perfectly.  

Even though it is the sixth rarest wand combination altogether, in 11th place, it sits just outside the 10 rarest wands in Hufflepuff. On the flip side, it takes the top spot in Slytherin as their rarest wand! In fourth and eighth place, it is still one of the rarer wands in Ravenclaw and Gryffindor.

## 5th: Blackthorn & Dragon
Not only is blackthorn wood renowned for its prodigious power but dragon cores are too. While power can corrupt, and both elements of this wand can be swayed towards the [Dark Arts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts), it doesn’t mean they will be. To paraphrase [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore), it is our choices that show who we really are, not our abilities. As the owner of this wand, it goes without saying that you are someone who possesses great skill, knowledge and ambition. Most importantly? You know that with great power comes great responsibility and you don’t take it for granted.

While it sits at the midpoint of our list of ten rarest wands, this is actually the rarest wand in Hufflepuff. Gryffindor matches the overall ranking, and it is *slightly* more popular in Ravenclaw in sixth place. As their 13th rarest, you’ll find the most in Slytherin.

## 4th: Blackthorn & Phoenix
We wouldn’t say that this wand combination has trust issues… but we would say it is one of the hardest to win over. Both the core and the wood have a rather picky reputation – expecting their owner to prove themselves before they’ll truly accept them. Perhaps this is a character trait you recognise in yourself? If this is your wand, we imagine you’re somebody who can be closely guarded at first. It takes you a while to warm up and let people see the real you. Yet, once you do, you are the definition of loyalty and will stand by your loved ones no matter what. 

Climbing the ranks of rarest wand, the blackthorn and phoenix wand is number four on the rarest list. It is even less common in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in third and second place but slightly more popular in Slytherin and Ravenclaw in sixth and seventh place.

## 3rd: Poplar & Dragon
Did you know that two of the [Ministry’s](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) most accomplished [Ministers for Magic](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/minister-for-magic), Eldritch Diggory and Evangeline Orpington, were the owners of wands made from poplar wood? As this wand wood values reliability, strength and consistency, you can see how it was drawn to them. Building on that, we also know dragon heartstring cores produce the most powerful magic. Put them together and we imagine you’re someone extremely impressive, who exudes an air of authority but is clearly fair-minded too.

Despite being one of the rarest wands overall, it sits just outside of the Slytherin top 10 at number 11. Taking all three of the rarest spots, it is less *poplar* in the other houses – third in Hufflepuff, second in Gryffindor and the rarest in Ravenclaw.

## 2nd: Poplar & Phoenix
If this is the wand that chose you, then we see you as a visionary. You dream big but you’re also proactive in trying to follow your grand ideas through. Ollivander believed that poplar wood wands are happiest when working with a witch or wizard of clear moral vision. Combine that with the resourceful phoenix core which refuses to sit on the sidelines… and you’ve got an accurate reflection of your personality. You don’t just wait for things to happen – *you* make them happen. You don’t do things by halves.

Interestingly, this wand happens to be both the second rarest wand overall and the second rarest in Ravenclaw. Yet, you will find more among the other houses. It takes the fourth spot in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff and is slightly more common in Slytherin in seventh place.

## 1st: Poplar & Unicorn
As Ollivander’s grandfather, Gerbold Ollivander, liked to say, ‘If you seek integrity, search first among the poplars’. That’s something we can get on board with – especially for this wand. Poplar wand wood and unicorn hair are both known for their strong moral compass. Uneasily swayed to the Dark Arts, they remain consistent, loyal and true. If this is your wand, then we believe that the same can be said for you. Throughout your life, you have proved you will always choose what is right over what is easy and have an admirable inner strength.

In first place, the poplar and unicorn wand takes the title of rarest wand. This is the same for Gryffindor, but it is slightly more common in the other houses. In Slytherin, you will find it at number three, and it is fifth for both Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw.

## What about the Hogwarts houses?
As both your house and your wand reflect your personality, we’re not surprised to see that different houses find themselves drawn to different wood and core combinations. As a result, each house’s list of their 10 rarest wands looked a little different.

So, which wands appeared on a house list that didn’t make the overall top 10? Let’s find out…

## Ravenclaw 10th, Gryffindor 9th and Slytherin 9th: Willow & Dragon
This wand combination is all about raw potential. It’s about recognising a diamond in the rough. Spotting someone who is always willing and eager to learn. As the Ollivander family proverb goes, ‘he who has furthest to travel will go fastest with willow’. It’s not just the wand wood that gives us this impression, when you consider that dragon cores have a reputation for being powerful but temperamental too. As someone with this wand, you might struggle with some insecurities, but you’re destined to go far.

At number 11 overall, the willow and dragon wand just misses the cut as one of the 10 rarest wands. However, this is not the case for three of the houses. It is the 10th rarest wand for Ravenclaw and the ninth for Gryffindor and Slytherin. However, you will find a few more of these wands in Hufflepuff as their 24th rarest.

## 10th: Willow & Unicorn
Did you know that [Ron Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) had this wand? It makes sense to us. As Harry’s loyal best friend, who (despite being a [pure-blood](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/pure-blood)) had never been tempted to turn towards the Dark Arts, a unicorn wand core was a brilliant match for him. Plus, despite Ron’s struggles with his with self-esteem, it was clear that he always had the ability to become someone brilliant – which he did. If you happen to share this wand with Ron, you probably relate to his story on a personal level because you’ve been on a similar journey too.

Curiously, it feels as though the biggest differences in wand popularity can be found between Hufflepuff and Slytherin. While this is the 10th rarest Slytherin wand, it is much more common in Hufflepuff as their 42nd rarest! You’ll find this at number 20 for both the overall and Ravenclaw ranking. Ron Weasley might have had this wand combination, but it’s still the 14th rarest for Gryffindor.

## 5th: Willow & Phoenix
With a wand wood known for its healing power and a core that is known for its initiative and range of magic… we think this a wand that would be suited to the practical among you. Those who are analytical and like to solve problems. Those of you that are drawn to professions like medicine or teaching. Those who always want to fix things.

Interestingly, despite it being the fifth rarest in Slytherin, this wand combination is far more popular in Hufflepuff – it’s only their 28th rarest! Although, we’re not entirely surprised, with their house reputation of being a down-to-earth bunch. It might be the 14th rarest overall, but in 12th place, you will spot less in Ravenclaw and Gryffindor.

# Hufflepuff

## 10th: Holly & Phoenix
When we think about this wand combination, we picture a storm of emotions. You see, holly wands are protective and look out for their owners with a hot-headed streak. Yet, [phoenixes](/fact-file/creatures/phoenix) are some of the most independent and detached magical creatures to exist. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to pair the two together. However, when they find their perfect match, nothing can stand in their way. Perhaps you see this reflected in your own personality? You are a mass of contradictions, an unstoppable force of nature but your determination is unparalleled. 

As the same wand as [Harry Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter), while still rare, we’re not surprised to find the most in Gryffindor at number 23. It doesn’t make the list for Ravenclaw and Slytherin either as their 15th and 19th rarest. It just sneaks into Hufflepuff in 10th place and is 16th overall.

## 8th: Walnut & Dragon
A formidable combination of intelligence and power, this is a wand that feels as though it is almost capable of anything. If you have this wand then we would probably describe you in a similar way. You are an extremely fast learner who picks up just about anything. Your brain seems to work on a whole different level and people have refereed to you as brilliant, or even a genius, on more than one occasion. Nevertheless, such brilliance needs to be channelled correctly to avoid falling into the pitfalls of corruption – something you actively try to do.

Despite it making the Hufflepuff list as eighth rarest, this wand is 13th overall. Slytherin reflects the overall ranking, and you’ll find a few more in Gryffindor as their 17th rarest. Finally, this takes 11th place for Ravenclaw.

## If you take game night seriously… you’re Quidditch fan McGonagall

## Do you dream of true love? You’re secret-romantic McGonagall

A shrewd judge of character, nothing got past the grey tabby cat with spectacle markings. Minerva embodied some of the best feline personality traits and you do too… we’re talking intelligence and perceptiveness rather than furballs and chasing mice though.

With so many wonderful personalities reflected in nearly 150 possible Patronuses, it turns out you might share one with a Harry Potter character. From their unique quirks to how popular it is among your house – here are those animal forms. Can you spot yours on this list?

## Harry Potter & James Potter: Stag – Stately Sentinel

__*Considered the royalty of the British woodland, deer are proud and magnificent creatures. Interestingly, both James and Harry Potter’s Patronuses were that of a mighty stag who would charge at Dementors antlers first.*__

With their [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) tendency to dive headfirst into dangerous situations – especially when it involved protecting people they love – [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) and his father, [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter), were an excellent reflection of their Patronus. Interestingly, those of you in Hufflepuff seem the most drawn to this Patronus – but only just.

The stag is a rather rare form, taking the 119th spot in terms of popularity – the same as its ranking in Ravenclaw. In 118th place, it is slightly more common in Gryffindor and sneaks up another spot in Hufflepuff as 117th most popular. It is least popular in Slytherin at 127. 

## Lily Potter & Severus Snape: Doe – Majestic Protector

__*The queens of the British woodland, these female deer are proud, magnificent creatures. Lily Potter and Severus Snape each famously had a doe Patronus, with Snape’s being a representation of his love for Harry's mother.*__ 

Knowing the origins of [Snape’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape) Patronus stretch right back to his and [Lily’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) childhood, we weren’t surprised to find that this was unique to him and not a Patronus that [Slytherins](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin) are often drawn towards. Out of all four houses, it is the least popular there, in 126th place.

At number 120, this Patronus is also rare among the other houses. While Lily and James’ Patronuses matched perfectly as King and Queen of the forest, in 119th place, this isn’t a common occurrence among other Gryffindors. You’ll find slightly more in Hufflepuff where it takes 118th place and Ravenclaw matches the overall ranking of 120. 

## Remus Lupin & Nymphadora Tonks: Wolf – Strong and Soulful

__*Known for their distinctive, soulful howl and mysterious nocturnal habits, it's easy to see why wolves have captured the imagination of many a storyteller. This animal is also significant for being Lupin's Patronus which was shared with Tonks.*__ 

Both [Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin) and [Tonks](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/nymphadora-tonks-fact-file) had an interesting relationship with their Patronus. For Lupin, though it was a wolf rather than a [werewolf](/fact-file/creatures/werewolf), he thought his animal guardian was too close to his *furry little problem*. When casting the spell, he would choose to disguise it by producing an incorporeal Patronus instead.  

Although Tonks was a [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), at number 74, you’ll find this Patronus the least in her house. Yet, this isn’t entirely unexpected. Tonks’ Patronus wasn’t always a wolf – it had originally been a jackrabbit. Her love for Remus Lupin caused it to change form. 

Actually, while it is the 50th most popular Patronus, you’ll find quite a lot of Slytherins with this enigmatic guardian – it’s their 27th most popular. At number 40, it’s not quite as common in Ravenclaw but we wouldn’t consider it rare. In 52nd position, there are a few less in Gryffindor. 

## Kingsley Shacklebolt: Lynx – Graceful and Gleaming

__*Their name might derive from the Greek word ‘to shine’ (thanks to their reflective eyes), yet Lynxes prefer to remain hidden. This wise animal makes a perfect guardian – and you share this Patronus with the ever-stoic Kingsley Shacklebolt.*__ 

A rare gem like [Kingsley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/kingsley-shacklebolt), the lynx is 92nd when it comes to Patronus popularity. Curiously, this Patronus that eschews the spotlight is most common in Hufflepuff in 62nd place. At the other end of the scale, its number 100 for Slytherin. There are a couple more in Gryffindor as the 96th most popular, and it is slightly higher up the [Ravenclaw](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ravenclaw) ranking in 83rd place. 

## Arthur Weasley: Weasel – Savvy and Sleek

__*The nimble weasel is often depicted in culture as being a wily old thing. As someone with this Patronus, perhaps it speaks to your intelligent and perceptive nature? It also happened to be Arthur Weasley’s Patronus, so you’re in excellent company.*__ 

If one of the [Weasleys](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys) didn’t have a weasel it would W-easily be considered weird. Luckily, this smart and sprightly creature is the Patronus form of the Weasley patriarch, [Arthur](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/arthur-weasley). At number six, it is one of the more popular Patronuses. However, despite having ties to a Gryffindor family, you’ll find the most weasels in Slytherin, where it takes third place. 

For Gryffindor? Well, it drops just below the overall ranking in seventh place. It is sixth for Ravenclaw and in 12th place, it is least popular among Hufflepuffs. 

## Seamus Finnigan: Fox – Stealthy and Shrewd

__*Foxes are a widely known symbol of cunning and stealth. Highly adaptable, your Patronus has the ability to thrive anywhere. Interestingly, this wily creature happened to be the Patronus of Harry’s classmate, Seamus Finnigan: so you're in good company.*__ 

At number four, the clever fox is one of the more popular Patronuses. Yet even though a fox’s coat contains the red and gold of Gryffindor and member of that house, [Seamus Finnigan](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/seamus-finnigan), had this Patronus… you’ll find most in Slytherin. It just misses out on their top spot in second place. It drops down to third for Ravenclaw, fifth for Gryffindor and eighth for Hufflepuff.  

## Hermione Granger: Otter – Clever and Capable

__*Otters are nimble creatures and talented swimmers. Playful and dexterous – they have even been known to juggle rocks. Known for their intelligence, it is no surprise that Hermione Granger also has this Patronus.*__ 

[Hermione’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) Patronus was always going to reflect her intelligent nature, and it appears to be the case for a lot of you too! At 23rd most popular, we are in the company of quite a few brainiacs. 

Interestingly, Hufflepuff are the house most drawn to this Patronus – breaking into their top 20 at number 17. Ravenclaw is close behind at 19 and it takes 22nd place in Gryffindor. However, it appears Slytherins have less of an affinity with this fluffy friend, dropping well below the overall rank to number 61. 

## Fred Weasley & George Weasley: Magpie – Sociable Collector

__*These birds are most known for being collectors of shiny objects (very Niffler coded). They’re also social and chatter to each other. Interestingly, [Fred](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fred-weasley) and [George](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/george-weasley) both had this Patronus, which complements their personalities.*__ 

They say that if you see two magpies you can expect joy... when both Weasley twins were together? It was joy squared. However, in seventh place, it seems as though Slytherin is most fond of these sharp-sighted birds.

You could say Slytherin have a unique connection to this animal form – it isn’t anywhere near another top ten and is 41st overall. It takes 45th and 50th position for Ravenclaw and Gryffindor. It is even less common in Hufflepuff, at number 85. 

## Luna Lovegood: Brown Hare – Eccentric Energy

__*Hares are famously known for their speed, eccentricity and connection to the moon. Interestingly, Luna Lovegood’s Patronus happened to be a hare too! She’s certainly not afraid to lean into her uniqueness. Can you relate?*__

This dreamy Patronus suits the [equally dreamy Ravenclaw](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/luna-lovegood) with its distinctive quirks. At number 34, there are many of you who feel the pull towards the sprightly hare. Most of you are in Gryffindor, where it the 26th most common Patronus. In Hufflepuff it is number 32 and it is 37 for Ravenclaw. Bucking the trend, you will spot less of these guardians in Slytherin where it takes 58th place. 

## Ernie Macmillan: Wild Boar – Wild Grandeur

__*The grandeur of the wild boar would make this a perfect Patronus for anyone in a tight bind. Interestingly, Harry's schoolmate Ernie Macmillan had a Wild Boar Patronus, which certainly complements the confidence Ernie liked to exhibit at Hogwarts!*__

Well, you can’t fault [Ernie](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ernie-macmillan-fact-file) for believing in himself! While he was a Hufflepuff, it turns out that there are more Ravenclaws with this Patronus – in 51st place compared to 58th. At number 60, it is still slightly more popular in Gryffindor than the overall ranking of 65. It is rarest in Slytherin at number 67 in their list.

# What about those Patronuses that are slightly different?

There are some characters in the wizarding world whose Patronuses are either not quite the same as the ones you might have discovered or whose forms are only known in more general terms. Yet, they’re still just as fascinating…

## Minerva McGonagall: Cat

As an exceptionally talented witch, while many were unable to even summon an incorporeal Patronus, [McGonagall](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/minerva-mcgonagall) could conjure multiple at once! Harry witnessed three of her cats, all with spectacle markings around their eyes, acting as messengers for the Head of Gryffindor.

Interestingly, we know that McGonagall was an [Animagus](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/animagus) who turned into a tabby cat with spectacle markings around her eyes. As a Patronus can match the animal form of an Animagus – we wonder if it’s the same for the [Transfiguration](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/transfiguration) teacher?

## Dolores Umbridge: Cat

It may seem strange that rotten-to-the-core [Umbridge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dolores-umbridge) was able to produce a Patronus – especially with many in the wizarding world holding the (somewhat justified) belief that a wizard can’t produce a Patronus if they’re not pure of heart. The Dark wizard Raczidian discovered this, when his backfiring [Charm](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) ended with him being devoured by maggots.

Umbridge is one of the exceptions. Some believe, in cases such as this, if a person has total conviction in the rightness of their actions (even if they are deplorable) it can create the necessary happiness. Yet, many Dark witches and wizards see the Patronus Charm as unnecessary – already numbed to the effects of the Dark creatures they associate with. 

## Ron Weasley: Jack Russell Terrier

Known for being brilliant best friends, we can see why [Ron](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) (also a brilliant best friend) found himself with a Jack Russell Terrier. With their mixture of loyalty, mischief-making and ability to eat pretty much anything – it just works.

There are two terriers within the Patronus experience – the Fox Terrier and the West Highland Terrier. As the Playful Protector and Bubbly Buddy, we think Ron’s Jack Russell would fit in well with these other pups. 

## Ginny Weasley: Horse

We might not have discovered what kind of horse [Ginny’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ginny-weasley) Patronus was… but we can see why it took that form. Horses are known for their powerful and wild natures – Ginny proved that she was a force to be reckoned with as the [Bat Bogey-Hex](/fact-file/spells/the-bat-bogey-hex) queen. They’re also known for their speed and athleticism – Ginny was an extremely talented [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) player. Horses are strong-willed and determined – remember what happened when they tried stop Ginny joining the [Battle of Hogwarts](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-battle-of-hogwarts)?

We think Ginny and her Patronus make a perfect pair.

## Cho Chang: Swan

While we know that [Cho Chang’s](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cho-chang) Patronus was a swan, it wasn’t made clear whether that was the graceful white swan or dignified black swan. Either way, her spectacular flying ability reflects the innate elegance of both. Plus, swans are known to be loyal and that was certainly the case when it came to Cho’s relationship with [Cedric Diggory.](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/cedric-diggory)

# The curious case of the Dumbledore family Patronuses  

It turns out that both [Aberforth](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file) and [Albus Dumbledore ](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore)have Patronus forms that live outside of the Patronus experiences – fitting as they’re both one-of-a-kind.  

## Albus Dumbledore: Phoenix

With [Fawkes](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/fawkes) as his trusted companion, it seems Albus already had an affinity with these majestic creatures – they’re both powerful and mysterious beings. Also, if you consider that in the wizarding world Patronuses which take the form of magical creatures are exceedingly rare, Dumbledore’s guardian could be seen as a reflection of his uniqueness and rare talent.

## Aberforth Dumbledore: Goat

The younger brother of Albus and owner of the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head), Aberforth was another Dumbledore known for his eccentricity. He famously had a fondness for goats, so we’re not shocked that this turned out to be his Patronus form. Plus, we don’t think it’s a coincidence that goats are known for being extremely stubborn and a certain crochety pub owner had that personality trait too.

With his name in the title of every book, [Harry James Potter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) didn’t just give off main character energy – he *was* the main character.

A half-blood wizard, he looked like his father, [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter), but had green eyes like his mother, [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter). Thanks to [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort), he also possessed a lightning-shaped scar on his forehead – a permanent reminder that he was the only person to have survived the [Killing Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-killing-curse).

Having been brought up by his miserable [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) relatives (The Dursleys), the Boy-Who-Lived’s magic remained a mystery to him until his eleventh birthday… when a letter from [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) changed his life forever.

A [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor), Harry was brave, resilient and quickly embraced all aspects of life at Hogwarts. From the good, such as finding his two best friends and becoming the youngest [Seeker](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/seeker) in a century to play for a house [Quidditch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/quidditch) team. To the bad, like battling [Dark magic](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dark-arts) and finding himself covered in [Stinksap](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/mimbulus-mimbletonia) in front of his crush. 

Although he made mistakes along the way, Harry was truly a good person and a natural leader (which he would humbly deny). The fate of the wizarding world might have been on his shoulders but with courage, and Ron and Hermione by his side, Harry could face anything.

## Ron Weasley

The sixth of seven siblings, [Ronald Bilius Weasley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/ron-weasley) was a pure-blood wizard, Gryffindor and Harry’s first best friend. As part of this [flame-haired bunch](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-weasleys), he grew up in their ramshackle but loving family home, [The Burrow](/fact-file/locations/the-burrow).

Ron was loyal, brave and hilarious… ‘Merlin’s most baggy Y-fronts’ had us cackling. Whether he was facing his fears by following the spiders to help Harry or standing up to [Malfoy](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/draco-malfoy) when he called Hermione a ‘Mudblood’, Ron proved to be a brilliant friend.

Yet, having grown up in the shadow of his siblings where everything, including his [pet rat](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/scabbers), was a hand-me-down that once belonged to someone else, he struggled with feeling inadequate. Unfortunately, his two best friends being the Chosen One and the smartest person in their year didn’t help with these feelings, causing a few bumps along the way.

Ultimately, Ron was a hero in his own right. A wizard with plenty of his own strengths and a crucial part of the golden trio.

## Hermione Granger

The [Muggle-born](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggle-borns) daughter of two dentists, [Hermione Jean Granger](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hermione-granger) was a Gryffindor with bushy brown hair, a brilliant mind, and the important final member of the golden trio. Despite having grown up with no knowledge that magic existed, Hermione soon fixed that – reading all her textbooks before school began.

A smart move… but what else would we expect from the witch that got 112% in her [Charms](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/charms) exam? The person who used cool logic to solve a Potions puzzle that would defeat most adults when she was only a first-year? Or the teenager entrusted with a very valuable [Time-Turner](/fact-file/objects/time-turner) by the [Ministry of Magic](/fact-file/locations/the-ministry-of-magic) itself?

However, that intelligence could prove to be a double-edged sword, with many believing her to be an ‘insufferable know-it-all’ – even Harry and Ron when they first met her. Yet, despite a few teething problems, they soon became inseparable.
