From flowery bonnets to gifts that squirmed – here are some of Christmassy Harry Potter moments that you can only find in the books.

Dumbledore wearing a bonnet

One thing we never saw in the Harry Potter films was Christmas dinner and, quite frankly, we were robbed…

Fun, festivities and fantastic headwear? No that’s a celebration we can get on board with!

The Christmas presents Harry got from the Dursleys

Christmas presents from the Dursleys? The miserable Muggles who made Harry’s life a misery? Yes! Harry did used to get gifts from his rotten relatives! They weren’t exactly high quality though…

50 pence, how… generous. At least Ron found the Muggle coin fascinating! Although, it was better than the toothpick and single tissue they gave Harry in later years.

Speaking of Christmas presents… Kreacher had an interesting one for Harry

Harry’s relationship with the house-elf that he inherited was complicated. In what appeared to be a festive olive branch, Kreacher sent his new master a Christmas present. However, we bet Harry wished he hadn’t.

Yeah… we’d rather have a pair of Uncle Vernon’s old socks instead!

Percy Weasley and Rufus Scrimgeour gate-crashed The Burrow

Things were decidedly frosty between Percy and the rest of the Weasley family after Voldemort’s return to power. When he appeared at The Burrow on Christmas Day with the Minister for Magic, we hoped it was some sort of attempt at a family reunion.

Unfortunately, as demonstrated by Percy’s mashed-parsnip-splattered glasses, it wasn’t. Turns out it wasn’t the season of goodwill after all.

A Firebolt-shaped delivery

While the end of the third film saw Harry get his precious Firebolt and immediately take to the skies, in the books this moment was quite different… and caused far more drama.

In the books, this present arrived on Christmas morning. While we all know that Sirius was the mysterious Father Christmas-like figure behind the gift, at the time, the sender seemed to be anonymous. With Harry’s safety a huge concern, Hermione rightly questioned the motives behind such an extravagant present and reported it to McGonagall. Unfortunately, that led to a not-very-festive falling out between the trio – ho ho ho indeed!

When Christmas was spent at St. Mungo’s

In the fifth film, Arthur may have spent Christmas Day in Grimmauld Place but in the books, he was still in St. Mungo’s recovering from Nagini’s vicious attack. Despite being a hospital, they did try to bring the festive cheer with their decorations.

This book moment was also when we got to meet Neville’s parents and gained further insight into his tragic backstory.

Trelawney’s gloomy dining superstition

Harry’s third Christmas was a rather quiet affair – what with a supposed mass murderer on the loose. With many fleeing Hogwarts for the holidays, Christmas dinner was a much smaller event. There were only 13 at the table – much to Trelawney’s dismay!

As Harry and Ron were the first to rise and they very much remained alive… we think Sybill’s Inner Eye was on the blink.
