## The Leaky Cauldron is the oldest pub in London

Despite what many [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) think, the title of oldest pub in London goes to this well-loved wizarding establishment. Found on Charing Cross Road, the [Leaky Cauldron](/fact-file/locations/the-leaky-cauldron) was built in the 1500s – long before Charing Cross Road was even planned! Its true address is number one, [Diagon Alley](/fact-file/locations/diagon-alley).

## Muggles used to frequent the Leaky Cauldron

This wizarding institution wasn’t always a place that where only magical folk congregated. As it was built two centuries before the imposition of the International Statute of Secrecy, it was initially visible to Muggle eyes too. Muggles weren’t made to feel unwelcome or turned away. Having said that, thanks to the *interesting* conversations and even more *interesting* magical pets, many scarpered before finishing their mead.

## Neville Longbottom and Hannah Abbott lived above the Leaky Cauldron

In a turn of events that we find extremely adorable, after leaving [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts) not only did [Neville](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/neville-longbottom) continue his passion for magical plants as [Herbology](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/herbology) professor, but he also married [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff), [Hannah Abbott](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/hannah-abbott-fact-file). The happy couple decided to make a home for themselves living above the one-and-only Leaky Cauldron.

## A pub was the headquarters of a rebellion

Although we never learnt which one it was, according to *Sites of Historical Sorcery*, one of the wizarding pubs in [Hogsmeade](/fact-file/locations/hogsmeade) was said to have been the headquarters of the 1612 [goblin](/fact-file/creatures/goblin) rebellion. Could it have been the [Hog’s Head Inn](/fact-file/locations/the-hogs-head) which was known for its dubious dealings and schemes? Or perhaps it was the cosiness of the [Three Broomsticks](/fact-file/locations/the-three-broomsticks) that convinced the goblins to make it their base?

## The Hog’s Head Inn was run by a Dumbledore

While [Albus Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) ran Hogwarts, just down the road his brother, [Aberforth Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/aberforth-dumbledore-fact-file), ran the Hog’s Head Inn. Crochety and a big fan of goats, he and his brother didn’t always see eye-to-eye. Ultimately, they were both extremely good people and Aberforth even helped the resistance at Hogwarts after Albus’ death – thanks to a secret passage that connected the [Room of Requirement](/fact-file/locations/the-room-of-requirement) to his pub.

## Sybill Trelawney made her infamous prediction at the Hog’s Head Inn

The Hog’s Head Inn was the location of many crucial story moments from the founding of [Dumbledore’s Army](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/dumbledores-army) to [Hagrid](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/rubeus-hagrid) winning a dragon egg in a game of cards. However, there was one particular moment that changed the course of wizarding history forever. On a gloomy night, Albus Dumbledore went to interview [Sybill Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) for the role of [Divination](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/divination) teacher. He was thoroughly unimpressed until, among the ramshackle décor and sticky floor, she made her prediction about the boy destined to end [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) and rid the world of his evil!

## Katie Bell was given the cursed opal necklace at The Three Broomsticks

Run by Madam Rosmerta, the Three Broomsticks was a warm and welcoming establishment in Hogsmeade. Yet Dark Magic still managed to worm its way in there in the form of the cursed opal necklace. Part of a clumsy attempt on Dumbledore’s life, [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor) Quidditch team member, [Katie Bell](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/katie-bell), took the necklace from the pub while under the influence of the [Imperius Curse](/fact-file/spells/the-imperius-curse) and narrowly escaped its deadly power.

## It wasn’t just witches and wizards who frequented the Three Broomsticks

Said to be as old as the only all-wizard village in Britain, the Three Broomsticks was a bit of a haven for all sorts of magical beings, such as hags, who couldn’t disguise themselves particularly well in the Muggle world. In fact, Ron and Hermione once thought they spotted an ogre!

## Firstly, who were the Dursleys?

The Dursleys were a [Muggle](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) family who took an extraordinary amount of pride in their ordinariness – [Vernon Dursley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/vernon-dursley) even had a moustache comb. If that wasn’t monumentally mundane enough, they lived in an extremely ordinary house on a totally normal street – [number four, Privet Drive](/fact-file/locations/number-four-privet-drive).  

[Petunia](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/petunia-dursley) was Harry’s aunt and the only sister of his mother, [Lily](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lily-potter) – their similarities ended at their floral names. Where Lily was kind-spirited and welcoming, Petunia was mean and narrow-minded. 

Her husband, Vernon, was a director of the drill-making firm, Grunnings. A respectable job to match his respectable car and respectable family. Having a witch for a sister-in-law? Not respectable. 

Together, they had their son and apple-of-their-eye – Diddykins (otherwise known as [Dudley](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/dudley-dursley)). Some would call Dudley boisterous while most others would call him a spoilt bully.  

We also had the unfortunate honour of meeting Vernon’s sister, [Marge](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/marge-dursley), but the less said about the incident which was… blown completely out of proportion, the better. 

By the time Harry arrived on their doorstep, Vernon and Petunia Dursley were not close with Lily and [James](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/james-potter) Potter. Actually, after a disastrous dinner at a restaurant, Petunia not having Lily as one of her bridesmaids, and Vernon referring to James as an ‘amateur magician’, they weren’t on speaking terms.

## Ok, but why were they so horrible to Harry? 

With an introduction like that, it’ll come as no surprise to learn that the Dursleys were very prejudiced people. Anything that they didn’t understand, they feared – including magic. Something that unusual couldn’t be good and that included Harry. 

There is one other reason to consider here – jealousy. Did you know that Petunia had wanted to be a witch too? She had even written to [Dumbledore](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/albus-dumbledore) as a child to ask if she could go to [Hogwarts](/fact-file/locations/hogwarts). Although he let her down gently, Petunia’s resentment towards her sister and magic continued to grow. Eventually, magic was no longer the thing she most wanted, it was the thing she most despised.  

Harry was a living, breathing reminder of Petunia’s pain and a threat to the carefully curated image of her family. There would be no greater disaster than if the neighbours found out who Harry truly was – how could they bear the scandal!

## Surely, they had other family who could take Harry in?

Well, with that history, leaving your only son to live with the sister who threw his birth announcement in the bin is… not ideal. But, when [Voldemort](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/lord-voldemort) murdered Lily and James Potter, there wasn’t another choice. Lily didn’t have any other living family.

On James’ part, his parents Fleamont (the creator of [Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion](/fact-file/plants-and-potions/sleekeazys-hair-potion)) and Euphemia, had passed away. Born after Fleamont had retired, James was their only son – a wonderful surprise after they had given up any hope of having a child. Although they lived long enough to see him get married, Dragon Pox claimed them both before they met their grandson.

## Or literally anyone else?

Outside of their blood relations, the people that were closest to the [Potters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/the-potters) were not in any position to take Harry in. The [Marauders](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/marauders) had broken apart completely – [Peter](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/peter-pettigrew) was thought to be dead, [Sirius](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sirius-black) was locked up for Peter’s murder and [Lupin](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/remus-lupin) had retreated to the outskirts of society. 

Plus, while we’re sure that lots of wizarding families would have jumped at the opportunity to take in and raise the Boy-Who-Lived, Dumbledore thought that there might be a deeper magic at play – making this impossible.

## Couldn’t he live somewhere else once he knew he was a wizard? 

It’s true that Harry felt more at home at Hogwarts than he ever had at the Dursleys. He was no longer the lonely little boy in the cupboard-under-the-stairs – and not just because everybody here knew who he was. He had finally found his people – from his best friends to his godfather and everybody else who was there for him. 

Except, none of them were related to him by blood. More specifically, none of these people shared his mother’s blood. This is the crucial point. Even if James’ family had been alive, Harry couldn’t have stayed with them – and it all goes back to the [prophecy](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/sybill-trelawneys-first-prophecy). 

When [Professor Trelawney](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/sybill-trelawney) spoke of the one person who could vanquish the Dark Lord, Voldemort believed that meant Harry Potter. Determined to eliminate any threat to his power, he decided that the Potter family must be killed. 

Surprisingly, one of his most loyal [Death Eaters](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/death-eaters), [Severus Snape](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape), asked him to spare the life of Lily Potter. So, when Voldemort arrived on that Hallowe’en night in [Godric’s Hollow](/fact-file/locations/godrics-hollow), he gave Lily a choice. If she stepped aside and allowed him to kill Harry, he would let her live. She refused. He murdered her to get to her son. 

Except, Voldemort did not know that Lily’s sacrifice had unlocked an ancient magic. When she gave up her life to protect Harry, that protection lingered – flowing through his veins and making it impossible for Voldemort to touch him.  

Suspecting this, Dumbledore took Harry to live with the only other person to share Lily’s blood, Petunia. Despite being incredibly reluctant, bitter and furious (amongst other things), Petunia brought Harry into her home, sealing the Charm Dumbledore had placed – the bond of blood being the strongest shield he could give him.  

As Dumbledore explained in a letter to Petunia, while Harry could refer to the place where his mother’s blood still dwells as home, Voldemort could not harm him. Even if he only returned once a year. Even if it was miserable for him there. Even if the Dursleys resented him. As long as number four, Privet Drive was his home, the magic would continue to work. Harry would be protected, and Lily’s love and sacrifice would be honoured.

## The guest list  
Before there can be any party, there must be a guest list – that alone can make or break an event. [Harry](/fact-file/characters-and-pets/harry-potter) tended to have rather rubbish birthdays when he was with the Dursleys, but things significantly improved when he could celebrate with his favourite people. Our first party tip? Don’t create a party full of [Muggles](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/muggles) that get you down – fill it with people who will help bring the magic.  

Speaking of which, you have to actually invite the guests. ## Every party needs a theme 

Isn’t Harry Potter a theme on its own? Absolutely! A Potter party combining all your favourite things into some sort of wizarding world mashup would be spectacular. Yet, as the wizarding world is *so* vast and varied, it would be equally cool to home in on a particular element.  

Such as the Hogwarts houses. Bedeck every available space in the house colours, encourage some friendly competition and give every guest the opportunity to show off their house pride.

There are so many fun ways to add a wizarding twist to your party games – here are a few to spark your imagination.

With so many wonderful personalities reflected in nearly 150 possible Patronuses, some animal guardians are more common than others. Out of them all, these were the 10 rarest – can you spot your unusual Patronus on this list? 

## 10th: Lion and 9th: Lioness – Roarsome Royalty

You probably won’t be surprised to hear that the lion is not one of the 10 rarest Patronuses in [Gryffindor](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/gryffindor). Although, you might be surprised that's also the case for [Slytherin](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/slytherin). It creeps into the [Ravenclaw](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/ravenclaw) list at number 10 and is the eighth rarest Patronus in [Hufflepuff](/fact-file/magical-miscellany/hufflepuff). 

Interestingly, the lioness is a slightly different story. It is not on the Ravenclaw or Slytherin list, but it is the eighth rarest for Gryffindor and seventh for Hufflepuff.  

## 8th: Abraxan Winged Horse – Proud and Powerful

__*The Abraxan is a breed of magical winged horse, one of a few types in the wizarding world. This particular type pulls the Beauxbatons school carriage, so they are suitably majestic looking and even drink whisky.*__ 

While this powerful protector is eighth overall, it is not quite as uncommon in Gryffindor and Slytherin – taking 10th and ninth place. You are even more likely to find a Hufflepuff with this Patronus as it doesn’t make it into their rarest top 10. However, at number five, you will find less Ravenclaws are drawn to this Patronus.  

## 7th: Seal – Fearlessly Theatrical

At number 13 for Slytherin, the seal isn’t on their list of rarest Patronuses. However, in sixth, fourth and third place, that isn’t the same for Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. 

## 6th: Tiger and 5th: Tigress – Wild Majesty

While this big cat is not one of the 10 most uncommon Patronuses in Hufflepuff, it is the third rarest in Slytherin. You’ll find a few more tigers in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw – taking seventh and ninth place. 

This is similar for the tigress. Again, it is not on the Hufflepuff list but is the rarest Slytherin Patronus. Pretty uncommon for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, it makes their top 10 in sixth and eighth position. 

## 4th: Albatross – Dynamic and Free

You will find this seafaring bird on every house’s list. It just makes the cut in Hufflepuff as their 10th rarest. Yet, you will find slightly less of them in the other three – seventh place for Ravenclaw, sixth for Slytherin and fifth for Gryffindor.  

## 3rd: Impala – Lithe Leaper

At number three, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw mirror the overall ranking of rarest Patronuses. You’ll find a handful more impalas in Slytherin and Hufflepuff, as they take fourth and sixth place. 

## 2nd: Vulture – Poise and Patience

There aren't many Gryffindors with this dignified Patronus – it happens to be their rarest form. In line with the overall ranking, it is number two for Ravenclaw but fifth for Hufflepuff and Slytherin.  

## 1st: Erumpent – Epic and Thunderous

The larger-than-life Erumpent might take the top spot on the overall rank of rarest Patronuses but not when it comes to the houses. In second place, it just misses the top spot for Gryffindor and Slytherin. It only just makes it into the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw top 10 at number nine.

## What about the Hogwarts houses? 

As both your house and your Patronus reflect your personality, we’re not surprised to see that different houses find themselves drawn to different animals.  

This is certainly the case when it comes to the 10 rarest Patronuses. From their rankings to what form they take – each house has their own distinct list.

# Hufflepuff  

## 4th: Leopard and 2nd: Leopardess – Fierce and Fast

These speedy cats are right near the top of the Hufflepuff list, with the leopard in fourth place and the leopardess in second. Curiously, it does not make any other top 10. Both the leopard and leopardess sit outside the 20 rarest Slytherin Patronuses in 22nd and 23rd place. The leopard is the 11th and 14th rarest for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw while the leopardess is 12th for Gryffindor and 13th for Ravenclaw. 

## 1st: Shark – A Dominant Force

This mighty Patronus isn’t just slightly unusual for Hufflepuff – it swims into the top spot as their rarest.  

# Gryffindor 

## 9th: Shark – A Dominant Force 

One of the rarer Gryffindor Patronuses, this toothsome creature takes ninth place. At number 12, you will see a few more in Ravenclaw and more again in Slytherin, as it’s their 21st rarest.

## 10th: Elephant – Majestic and Memorable

You won’t find the elephant in the Gryffindor top 10 – it's their 16th rarest Patronus. The same goes for Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw where it takes 19th place.

## 8th: Cheetah – Stealthy and Speedy

This ferociously fast cat just breaks into the top 20 unusual Patronuses for Gryffindor and Hufflepuff. It is slightly rarer in Ravenclaw at number 17. 

## 7th: Python – Unyielding and Powerful

We were quite shocked to see a snake on the list of unusual Patronuses for Slytherin. Intriguingly, it is more popular in the other houses. It is the 18th rarest for Gryffindor and Hufflepuff and 15th for Ravenclaw. 

# Ravenclaw  

## 7th: Runespoor – Triple Threat

For a house that is all about the mind, it is funny to see that this three-headed snake is their seventh rarest Patronus. It is only slightly more common in Gryffindor and Hufflepuff in 14th and 12th place. Interestingly, it is only the 30th rarest Patronus for Slytherin.

## Did you know? 

In the wizarding world, Patronuses that take the form of magical creatures are considered extremely rare… but is that the same in our Muggle world?  

With a few as possible outcomes for your own Patronus, we thought it would be interesting to look at a handful of these magical creatures and just how popular they are. 

## Dragon – Ferociously Fiery

__*Possibly the most famous of magical creatures, but interestingly one of the rarest Patronuses in the wizarding world, dragons are deadly yet awe-inspiring and hold the most dangerous Ministry classification. Do not be afraid of these remarkable Patronuses – be...fired up!*__ 

Probably the first magical creature to spring to mind, this fiery friend is nowhere near the top of the rarest Patronus list for Slytherin – it’s only 113th! It is middle-of-the-road for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw in 73rd and 43rd place and far more uncommon in Hufflepuff in 25th position.  

## Unicorn – Rare and Mysterious

__*This grand, mythological beast has been a mainstay in folklore for centuries. Yet, they like to avoid human contact – fitting for a Patronus that is exceedingly rare in the magical world. A Patronus as mystical as it is impressive.*__ 

This beautiful Patronus is one of the less common Patronuses found among the houses – it even breaks into the Slytherin top 20. In 26th place, it is not quite as unusual to see this form in Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. It sits at number 27 for Hufflepuff.

## Thestral – All-Seeing and All-Knowing

You are likely to find quite a few Thestral Patronuses among the Slytherins – it is only the 94th most uncommon. In 49th, 44th and 37th place there are not as many in Ravenclaw, Gryffindor and Hufflepuff.

Some may say Neville had the memory of a goldfish. Some may say Neville's magical acumen left a lot to be desired. But don't listen to Augusta Longbottom! Sure, Neville had a few shortcomings in his earlier Hogwarts years (who didn't? Apart from Hermione, obviously) but for the most part, the poor lad was simply stressed out. 

Never forget this was the kid who got pushed out of a window by his Great Uncle Algie at an incredibly young age. It's understandable he might have a bit of residual anxiety! And probably part of the reason why Neville craved a gentle life, caring for plants, pottering around, not having to make complex potions in front of a [greasy-haired angry man who resembled a bat.](https://www.harrypotter.com/fact-file/characters-and-pets/severus-snape)

And this is what we see in you: a calm soul who just wants to live quietly and happily. No shocks, no surprises (unless it's a friendly explosion of Mimbulus mimbletonia stinksap) just... peace. Is that so much to ask?

Ah, music, a magic beyond all we do here!!!

Yes, oh yes, if you're reading this paragraph, we sense an intense rhythm positively emanating from you. As any hardcore Neville fan knows, the guy knows a thing or two about throwing some shapes on the dancefloor. And we're just so glad the Yule Ball rocked around in fourth year for Neville to discover his untapped potential in this area.

Some people just have an innate sense of musical timing, and some... do not. Not naming any names, Harry and Ron. But you absolutely do - whether that's finessing the absolute perfect playlist (Hedwig's Theme x 34, right?) or secretly harboring rock god status on your guitar in your bedroom. 

With this in mind, take a leaf out of Nev's book and dance like nobody's watching. Because even if they were, they'd probably give you tens, tens, tens across the board.

## If you get really cold all the time... you are layered-up Neville

Brr! Am I right?

That's you, that is. Yes, whatever the weather, you are just, quite simply, very very cold. But not just in winter. All the time. Even in the summer, you can be caught with an emergency hoodie or blanket at a picnic. Just in case. We see you.

Now, in Neville's defence, he was in a freezing, draughty castle a lot of the time we got to know him, and as such, was often to be found sensibly layering up in some extremely charming knitwear. But we get the impression Neville enjoys being cosy, whichever season it may be. And never forget he even slayed the final Horcrux in an absolutely adorable cardigan.

Do people underestimate you? Do folks help you lift your heavy suitcases down escalators on public transport more often than required? In a group setting, are you often given the 'easy' jobs, such as drying plates at a BBQ instead of being allowed near an open flame?

This is kind of like every time everyone took Neville for granted for six years and then he totally nailed it at the Battle of Hogwarts! Sure, you're not vanquishing evil snakes, but we absolutely believe you could - or be allowed to fry something on the BBQ. Whichever!

After years of forgetting vital passwords, losing toads, or being targeted by Cornish Pixies, poor Neville built up a timid reputation. But anyone who's seen *Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone* once or twice or a million times will have known all along that Neville was made of stronger stuff, after his showdown with Harry, Ron and Hermione in the story's climax. 

If you're drawn to this section, we suspect the same thing is happening to you - often overlooked but actually: your brilliance is simply hidden in plain sight. More fool anyone who doesn't see it.
