The artist tasked with recreating this well-loved story was illustrator, Ravenclaw (with a soft spot for Slytherin) and Harry Potter fan, Karl James Mountford. From early character studies to finished artwork, we are thrilled to exclusively reveal some of his sketches that give us a glimpse into how he captured the magic of Harry Potter.

What a treasure trove of treats! This illustration captures the wonder of the wizarding world perfectly – like the rough sketch of Harry and Hedwig in the Gryffindor dormitory. Or the early character study of Harry, Ron and Hermione, their bewildered expressions are adorable. From the wand icons to the snake border, you can see that every single detail was meticulously considered.

Speaking of details, this sketch is crammed full of iconic *Goblet of Fire* imagery. Frank Bryce climbing the stairs of the notorious Riddle House. The teeny Goblet of Fire. Plus, it’s fascinating to compare the sketch of the Triwizard Tournament champions to the finished version!

Then there is this brilliant early character study of the Weasley family. Percy’s pinched expression. Bill’s famous fang earring. Ron’s hand-me-down trousers which are a bit too short. While they are quite clearly a family, this sketch impressively shows that each Weasley had their own, distinct personality.

This is just a snippet of what you will find in this book crammed full of gorgeously detailed illustrations. In fact, there are over 150! Now that we have had a chance to pore over the art, let’s talk to the artist behind them all! From where his love of Harry Potter started, to which character he thinks is a ‘dude’, here’s what illustrator, Karl James Mountford, had to say.

### When did you first discover Harry Potter?

I think my aunt bought me the first two books when I was about 11 or so – I remember that the first film was coming out around that time. However, I didn’t start reading the books properly until a few years later, when my sister *insisted* I read *Prisoner of Azkaban*. That was it! I was hooked.

### Which scene was your favourite to illustrate?

That’s a tough one! There’s one piece I’m especially proud of – the scene where Harry returns from the graveyard. He’s lying on the Quidditch pitch, surrounded by people, looking up at the stars… while broken, grieving and traumatised. It’s one of those quiet moments in visual storytelling where you get to show real vulnerability. I also think it opens the door for me to create more emotionally gritty illustrations going forward.

### Do you have a favourite character to illustrate?

Dumbledore! He’s such a dude. To me, he’s a kind of punk persona – queer, rebellious, wise and yet flawed. In spite of his faults, he’s still willing to grow and learn. He makes mistakes but leads with humility and kindness from the front, rather than fear and hate from the shadows.

### What’s your favourite Harry Potter book and why?

That’s a hard one. *Prisoner of Azkaban* is special because it was my entry point into the world of Harry Potter. I inhaled *Goblet of Fire*, and I’ve probably reread it the most. Although, *Order of the Phoenix* has Dolores Umbridge, one of the best villains… dare I say worse than Voldemort? The fifth book introduces some complex but interesting characters and has a real ‘fight back’ energy that makes it unputdownable.

### Which Hogwarts House do you most identify with? 

Ravenclaw. I took the test and everything. It’s a fact now. They value creativity, wisdom, knowledge, so I feel like I’m a good fit for that house. 

I do have a soft spot for Slytherin, though. They get a bad rep, but at their core they’re loyal, ambitious, and unafraid to break the rules. You just can’t judge an entire group by a few rotten individuals!

With the promise of captivating performances from incredible actors, original music, real-world sound capture and so much more, the anticipation is building for the release of *Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone*. While we (im)patiently wait for 4th November, the reveal of the new covers couldn’t have come at a better time.

A treat for new listeners and existing fans alike, it’s easy to get lost in the richly-detailed art that echoes an important theme from the Harry Potter stories – things are not always as they seem.

## Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

One thing stood out to us as we pored over every detail of the new audiobook covers… they all offered us a ‘moment of reflection’. While each told their own story, that was the common thread that connected them.

This was clear on the cover of *Philosopher’s Stone* – well, it would be hard to miss a giant castle… they aren’t exactly subtle. Nevertheless, at first we thought this cover was a fantastic recreation of the moment that Hogwarts was revealed. Yet, as we kept looking, we saw little details which offered a brand-new perspective.

Did you notice that the reactions of Harry and his friends are at the forefront of this design rather than the school? We thought that was rather brilliant. The wonder in Harry’s face reiterates how life-changing this moment was for him – the realisation that there was so much more than Privet Drive and the narrow-minded Dursleys. This was the start of his real journey.

Having Hogwarts appear upside down was a nice touch too – perhaps another nod to how everything Harry knew had been flipped on its head? Or how he spent his childhood not knowing that another world was right at his fingertips? Or maybe it’s physics…

There are so many fun elements to this cover we don’t know where to begin… so let’s talk about the Golden Snitch. Obviously, this magical object being both metal and shiny makes it a perfect mirror – very on theme. Yet, there is more to this winged ball than meets the eye. Did you know that Snitches are enchanted to only recognise the first human to ever touch them? Something to bear in mind…

Anyway, back to the cover and you’ll spot Draco Malfoy hot on Harry’s tail. While it could be that Malfoy is there because he happened to be selected as Slytherin Seeker that year – we think there’s slightly more to the story.

*Chamber of Secrets* is all about Slytherin and their… secrets. Malfoy is the perfect example of the house’s worst traits. He also happens to have an *interesting* connection to the rogue Bludger from this match. There was even talk about him being a certain heir. Overall? An inspired Easter egg.

Incidentally, we winced seeing Harry reach for the Snitch – we know what happens next. Totally unrelated but regrowing all your arm bones seems about as fun as being locked in a room with an angry Hungarian Horntail.

## Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

At first glance, you can’t help but appreciate the nod to the original Bloomsbury book cover – with the purple colour palette and iconic scene where Harry and Hermione rescued Sirius while flying Buckbeak.

Yet, look again and you’ll see a new perspective. This time we see Harry and Hermione from Sirius’ point of view – as a reflection. Could that possibly be hope we see on his face? With his character having been so thoroughly misunderstood, could this symbolise the moment he knew that people were finally starting to see his true self? Food for thought…

The eagle-eyed among you will have spotted the full moon in the background and we guarantee that it wasn’t just added for aesthetic reasons. Remember Lupin’s furry little problem? Yep, there’s always more to the story.

## Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Accompanied by a Blast-ended Skrewt and foliage from the final task, the design cleverly alludes to both the Triwizard Tournament and to the idea of danger being everywhere.

And we mean everywhere. Have another look at the Triwizard Cup… can you see it? Deep within the trophy is a glimpse of something that will change everything – a headstone inscribed with a name. It might be a mirror image (genius move from the designers), but we can see that it says Tom Riddle. For superfans, we imagine the emotions it evokes within you are not confined to the small range of teaspoon. New listeners? We just hope that you’re prepared.

## Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Okay, this cover proves that it is all about the details! You can literally see every scratch and smudge on Harry’s face, the determination in his expression and the reason for all of that reflected in his glasses – the epic battle between Voldemort and Dumbledore at the Ministry.  

Colours play a critical role here – the red of the Gryffindor Headmaster and his phoenix, Fawkes, clashing against the green of the Slytherin Dark Lord and his snake, Nagini, as two enormous powers collide. Plus, the split of colours illuminating Harry’s face makes us think of the connections he shared to both wizards (whether willingly or not) and the struggle he had with his own identity.  

When you remember how many people refused to believe Harry in the fifth story, you realise the reflection being in Harry’s glasses is rather poignant. For months, he had been trying to get people to see the truth, and this moment was a turning point. Finally, it seemed as though the wizarding world was willing to open its eyes.

## Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Obviously, you’re confronted by the image of the Dark Mark – which can never mean anything good and would fill anyone with dread – but there are also subtle horrors hidden in the details too.

Take the green tones that weave their way through the image as they steadily encroach on Hogwarts. Could this be symbolic of the insidious spread of Voldemort’s hatred as he steadily gains power?

Then there is the reflection of Malfoy where he’s almost hidden in the shadows – breaking our heart in various ways. It not only reminds us of the secret he had to carry but also that he had to do it alone. He might be a prejudiced bully, but he was also a teenager who was asked to do the impossible – culminating in this fateful night. Although, without giving too much away, even this moment was not what it seemed.

## Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

In this final battle of good and evil, the choice to have this pair take centre stage feels important. The stakes have never been higher, but this image isn’t cold or gloomy, it’s full of warmth and light. Yes, the Death Eaters are lurking, but did you see where? Their reflection might be ominous but it’s on the shield and weapon of a Hogwarts suit of armour. A symbol of strength and protection. Ultimately? This cover, like the stories, is full of hope.

Once again, Wizards of Baking was shot amidst the backdrop of Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter, on some of the original sets where Harry Potter's journey was brought to life on screen. Keep an eye out and you might spot some famous locations from Privet Drive to The Great Hall and even Gringotts Bank.

Though some of you might even be lucky to see all of this in person! A group of lucky fans will have the opportunity to attend the grand finale and witness the bakers create a showpiece that celebrates the Goblet of Fire in a nod to the 20th anniversary. Which seems a fitting conclusion, as in the end, only one team can emerge as the champions. Who will take home the trophy and be crowned the Wizards of Baking?

## There was Back to Hogwarts fun with James and Oliver Phelps at a very special Goblet of Fire screening

On the eve of Back to Hogwarts, there was a very special screening of *Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire*, including a live Q&A with none other than James and Oliver Phelps (AKA Fred and George Weasley).

## Warner Bros. Studio Tour London hosted a countdown to 11am

This Back to Hogwarts, 300 lucky fans got to join in the countdown to 11am at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter.

## Fans celebrated at Harry Potter Shop New York and Harry Potter Shop Chicago

Fans in New York and Chicago were in for a treat as both shops celebrated with in-store activities, a special photo opportunity, giveaways, competitions and some exclusive time-limited goodies for Back to Hogwarts 2025! 

### Chicago

## Natalia Tena (Nymphadora Tonks) joined the Back to Hogwarts celebrations in Milan

Yes! Natalia Tena, the actress who brought our favourite Hufflepuff Metamorphmagus (Nymphadora Tonks) to life on the big screen, joined the magical event at Teatro Nazionale, Milan for a brilliant Back to Hogwarts celebration.

## Fans took exams at the Sainte-Geneviève Library – but the fun kind

Yep, over at the Sainte-Geneviève Library, was a celebration Hermione Granger would adore.

Dov Milsztajn, who voiced Harry’s blond-haired nemesis, Draco Malfoy, in the French version of the films made an appearance.

And a second Slytherin too! Solange Boulanger, who dubbed Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter films, was there to provide a special dictation session for visitors wanting to improve their magical vocabulary.

__Spain__

## Magic at Museo del Ferrocarril in Madrid

There were a whole host of magical celebrations at Museo del Ferrocarril (the Railway Museum) in Madrid, with two whole days of Hogwarts-themed fun at a special event – giving thousands of fans the chance to imagine themselves on their very own journey to Hogwarts!

On September 1st, the countdown to 11am was hosted by hosted by David Moreno with three very special guests... Axel Amigo, Laura Pastor, and David Carrillo, who brought the voices of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley to life in the Spanish version of the films.

Warwick Davis is heading Back to Hogwarts in HBO Original Harry Potter television series

Warwick Davis is set to reprise his role as the beloved Professor Filius Flitwick, marking his homecoming to the wizarding world in the role he originated for the films.

There’a more! Set to join him at the teachers’ table is Sirine Saba as Professor Sprout and Richard Durden as Professor Cuthbert Binns, marking the first time we’ll get to meet the ghostly History of Magic teacher onscreen. Plus, the Hogwarts Hospital Wing is now fully staffed, as Bríd Brennan takes on the role Madam Poppy Pomfrey – the Hogwarts matron and highly skilled healer who can fix all manner of magical bumps and bruises.

The house tables are filling up too, as we welcome three more Hogwarts students: Elijah Oshin as Dean Thomas, Finn Stephens as Vincent Crabbe, and William Nash as Gregory Goyle. 

Outside of Hogwarts, we learnt Gringotts’ Bank has gained an employee, with the announcement that Leigh Gill has been cast as the goblin, Griphook.

## Warwick Davis is set to reprise his role as Professor Flitwick in HBO’s Harry Potter series

With filming underway, our excitement for HBO’s Harry Potter series is only growing… especially with the reveal that Warwick Davis is to walk the halls of Hogwarts once more. In a rather *Charming* turn of events, he will be reprising his role as the wise Head of Ravenclaw house, Filius Flitwick!

## Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking is back for season two
