A Boggart is a shapeshifter that takes the form of what someone fears the most. As a result, nobody knows what a Boggart looks like as it will shift instantly upon encountering a person. The more fearful a person is, the more vulnerable they are to Boggarts. Even Muggles can feel their presence (and occasionally spot one), but they often write off the encounter as just their imagination. Boggarts are not truly alive and are one of the odd non-beings that exist in the wizarding world. Like Poltergeists and Dementors, they appear to be created and sustained by human emotions. They prefer to dwell in dark, enclosed spaces – such as wardrobes, the gaps beneath beds and cupboards under sinks. Remus Lupin once encountered a Boggart that had lodged itself inside a grandfather clock. Laughter is needed to defeat a Boggart along with the Boggart-Banishing Charm, Riddikulus.
